Nice, but like the previous model better.

Nice pants. The pockets on the previous model were more conducive to travel. The previous model had two pockets together on the front of each leg, on one side a zippered pocket (nice for safely stashing the passport) inside of a snap closure pocket. This model has one larger pocket on the front each leg. The zipper on the back pocket is a nice addition, but there is only one.

Redesign destroys a formerly great product

What a disappointment. The prior Renegade Convertible design is the best pants I've ever used. In the new design there are no side leg zippers; you'll have to take your boots off to convert to shorts. The old design had a secure phone pouch inside an outer pocket that snaps shut, securing your phone from loss: now there are two open pockets in the back (harder to reach) with no security. I used to think Kuhl products were designed by people experienced in the backcountry, but it's clear they don't test in the kind of terrain I hike where a dropped phone may be unretrievable. There are two very large zipped cargo pockets in front but the phone will flop around in them. There's a pocket high in the back with a zipper that a phone fits, but it will be under your backpack's hip belt, and if you are not wearing a pack will take the brunt of a fall that puts you on your butt. If anyone knows of someone with last year's design in stock please communicate where we can find them! Otherwise I'll be using them until they wear out.

Why did convertibles become so un-Kuhl?

Somewhere along the way, convertible pants became uncool. People would rather take off their boots takeoff their pants and change into shorts or vice versa rather than quickly and easily take off the pant legs. For a while, it seemed like Kuhl resisted the pressure. My Liberator stealth convertibles are the best hiking pants I ever owned. I still wear them every hike. The stealth zipper was classy and easy. The fabric was awesome. And kuhl always has a decent phone pocket, which many other hiking pants don’t. Bring back those pants! Or at least put ankle zippers on the new ones! And get rid of those ugly front zippers. They should look like pants.

Bad zippers

I bought these pants for travel. My first trip with them was the Azores. I needed them to be quick dry, so I could wash them out and dry overnight. And I needed them to have zippered pockets, to protect my travel documents. The pockets were a total failure because the zippers jam. They did this on both pockets on both pairs of pants. They did it for four weeks in the Azores, getting worse each day. They did it in passport control, when I was trying to get my passport out. I'm returning them.

Ugly

I wear the previous version of these pants every day and I will not be buying this version. The black zippers give these pants a terrible look that makes them stand out too much. I want my pants to look like regular pants. And the new pocket design is awful for the normal things I use them for: phone, wallet, keys, etc. What's the point of pants that are so impractical?

I added a left back pocket

3 stars because there was no left back pocket. So, I took the pants to a tailor and had them add a left back zipper pocket. The rubberized zippers across the front take two hands as you have to hold the rubber out of the way. And large items hit your knees as they are mounted in front instead of the traditional cargo pocket side mounting. These are well made pants. But, older Kuhl convertibles were great.

Very disapointed in the redesign.

Wow. Kuhl ruined these convertible pants. First they removed the zippers at the bottom so you could slip them over boots without taking the boots off. Woxn't be as easy to slip off the bottom legs on the trail now. Pocket placements also seems suspect compared to the old version.

They ruin the design, the previous design was awesome. Use the new material and go back to the old design.

High quality, pricey, roomy in the crotch & waist

Pros: These pants are made of a heavy-duty fabric that seems like it will last a long time. Zippers and seems are very sturdy. Lots of pockets and well placed! Convertible option (from pant to short) is a nice feature. UPF protection is great. Moisture wicking is good for quick drying. Cons: Quite pricey. A little heavy if ultralight backpacking. Also, these fit larger in the waist compared to all my other (6 pairs) of different models of Kuhl pants in the exact same size. The Renegade convertible has a longer inseam in the crotch and in the bathing trunk area than many other models of Kuhl pants in the same size. The waist part of these pants is a little longer (taller) and sits a little higher on the waist/hips than some other models. Could be a bit large for users with smaller torsos. For reference I am 5'7", 147 lbs, and I wear a 30 waist 32" length. Definitely recommend as a durable hiking pant in weather that can range from very hot to quite cold. Although I've only backpacked twice in them since purchased, they seem like they will be my go-to backpacking pants for a long time.

The new Kuhl

The new Kuhl convertible pants are vear comfortable. Though they changed the pocket layout it is more streemline and convenient. One interesting thing i like is the zippers for the legs were 2 different colors. I have had many convertable pants in the past. This feature was pleasant because at a glance you know you have the correct leg. I would recomend these pants to any traveler.
