Not what I was hoping for
I bought these to replace a very old pair of Outdoor Research Magic Mitt mittens (photos attached) that remain my beat-up favorite after many, many years. The old pair were just simple mittens (not fingerless gloves) that allowed both the finger and thumb covers to be flipped open. They provide excellent warmth, but can be easily flipped "open" as needed to cool down or have full finger use. They are great for running and all kinds of other outdoor activities. The new fingerless option is not that warm (the fingers defeat the mitten benefit) and the flaps (especially the thumb) do not stay reliably closed. The construction seems solid, and if these were mittens (not fingerless gloves), they would be closer to what I have been looking to replace for years.
Cold Thumbs
I bought these for cold weather use when I may need access to my fingers for tasks. I gave them a trial run in 35 - 40 degree F weather on a bike ride through a state park. My fingers stayed warm, but my thumbs were cold. The mitten thumbs have a leather-like gripping surface with no insulation underneath, so this could be a reason. Also some air ingress due to the foldover flap of the thumb section. Easy access to the inner semi-fingerless gloves so I could use my phone to take a few photos. The magnetic clasps are a nice feature to hold the mitten parts open when not being used. Clip to hold the pair together is good. I'd say these are okay for moderate conditions, but not really cold weather.
thumb cover failure
Purchase these to shovel snow and run my snowblower. Run a bit small but should stretch a bit. First snow clearing with them had a big failure. Thumb covers would not stay closed. Any hand movement the thumb covers would flip back and the magnets would hold them open. Tried pushing thumbs further into glove didn’t help. I like the gloves but will sew the thumb covers closed will work for me. Finger flaps work great.
Thumbs dont stay covered
These are warm and the flip over the fingers works great. however the thumb flip cover and magnet just dont work. The cover keeps coming off, if you use the other hand to adjust the cover when it comes off, the magnet catchs the cover. Had to keep adjusting over and over - made my thumbs really cold
Windbloc Convertible Mittens
These are really good convertible mittens. They are made of windbloc fleece which is a game changer on cold windy days.
Perfect for backcountry skiing, I can air out my fingers on the climb but on the descent it is plenty warm
Warm and convenient
Excellent for keeping warm, though a little difficult to remove. I'm happy with them.
