Perfect all-season layer

I've been wearing this nonstop since I received it! It's truly the perfect layer for transitional weather. Super soft and stretchy, and warm while being breathable thanks to the grid pattern. I've loved it for cooler morning bike rides, since it keeps me warm but the wind gets through a bit to prevent a ton of sweating. One feature I love is the how the pockets lay flat and feel pretty minimalistic while still being functional. It packs down to basically nothing which makes it easy for travel and hiking too. My only gripe is that I wish it had thumb holes! I'm not usually a big purple fan but the color is saturated and is really pretty in person.

Almost perfection and happy to live with that!

I'm delighted with my Patagonia R1 ladies' jacket and very pleased it arrived in time for variable April springtime weather here in the PNW. I tested it in a variety of conditions from just above freezing in the morning to the mid-70s on some afternoons, alone and under a windshell and rain jacket. It worked nicely given its light weight with some caveats as to wind and temperature range. First, some positives about the construction and design. Mine is a color called "purple" I think is closer to an iris blue -- I love that it hits the mark between too bright and overly dull and fits in nicely with the landscape wherever I wear it, whether that be the Great Outdoors or Suburbia. It has a full zip and standup collar with the thoughtful added feature of a foldover of the cut-pile grid-fleece lining so the collar is soft under your chin to prevent irritation and chafing and there is a small but adequate zipper garage. The main zip works smoothly one-handed down and one-handed from midway upward. The same applies to the upper chest pocket and the generous side pockets are placed to just miss the hip belt on many backpacks so you can access them without undoing your pack waistbelt. All the pockets are lined with perforated nylon and the inner side pocket linings have open tops to serve as pockets for drop-in carry of various larger odds and ends. Hot tip: The entire jacket can be easily inverted and stuffed without struggle into one of the inner open-top mesh pockets, making for compact self-storage. The material itself is a smooth-faced cut grid-fleece with one major concession to weight -- the fabric matrix that holds the little fleece squares is so thin it is little more than a mesh and largely transparent when held up to a backlight. I would describe it as a _lightweight_ fleece. It provides maximum warmth for minimal weight. It is noticeably warm in still air but any breeze goes right through, making for a chill. The solution for greatest versatility in my use is to wear it under a light uncoated wind jacket or my rain jacket if I expect wind or cooler temperatures. This REALLY multiplies the warmth of the R1, as body heat trapped by the fleece squares is held in the gridlines and that makes for a noticeable difference. Overheating with exertion? Simply remove your outer jacket and/or pull down the full front zip to regulate temperature as needed. That shouldn't happen too often, as I found the R1 almost sentient in the degree of temperature regulation it offers on its own, likely the result of the fabric content and the grid-fleece construction. Little details abound that are functional yet lightweight, things like glove-friendly zipper pulls made from knotted fine cord and the same for the hanger at the neck. The edges are nicely self-bound and the smooth outer face and body-conscious athletic fit make for a very sleek, even dressy appearance. The tops of the shoulders are free of seaming to avoid irritation from backpack straps. There's several things I definitely don't like, but not enough to be "stoppers". For one, this jacket really needs thumb holes or thumbies and foldover cuffs to make convertible mittens and keep the sleeves firmly down when worn alone or under another jacket. It is so versatile this omission is glaring. Another "miss" for me is the way the fabric has a tendency to ladder on an angle below the bosom. It stretches over time and use and develops a flare at the bottom hem -- great if you have wider hips but causes a huge air leak for slim-hipped me. With that in mind, a string and toggle at the bottom hem would really help and I may try to rig one through the hem tunnel to address this shortcoming. With further use, an unexpected shortcoming came to light: There is a seam in each arm that wraps around in a spiral at one point falls right across the underside of the elbow and is uncomfortable, eventually painful and REALLY ANNOYING under pressure, as when using an office chair with arms, a car door armrest while driving to the trailhead, or when reclined leaning on one elbow in a tent while eating breakfast porridge. The fleece squares below the seam are smaller and less warm than in the body. For reference, I'm 65, stand 5'10, weigh 172lbs with a 40in band chest size, 43 inches over the bust and wear a 38B bra. The size Large is a perfect athletically slim fit for me worn alone or over a long-sleeve wicking Tee. I unexpectedly took a dunking in river water when the bark on a fallen tree over a pond peeled off underfoot. I found the R1 really shone here, as I was able to wring it out and put it on under my wind jacket, making for a comfortable walk to the trailhead and my waiting car. The fabric touts built-in odor control that kept the jacket from becoming smelly from pond water till I could wash it properly at home. Overall, the R1 is a terrific addition to my outdoor wardrobe and far more versatile than I imagined and I've pretty much lived in it since I got it. It is warm for its weight and can be made warmer by wearing a jacket over it to block the wind. I love the full zip but miss thumb holes and don't like the lower wrinkles and flare that develop with wear and those annoying elbow seams, but still regard it as a "hit" that has already become a staple in my outdoors wear and indoors to take the chill off early spring mornings without turning on the heat.

Great lightweight layer

This is a great lightweight layer. For spring skiing I wore underneath a shell and stayed warm and skin could breathe. Great jacket on its own for a hike, walk or out and about but not super warm. I’m usually between a S and M in outerwear and I’m glad I went for the M. The S would have been too small, it’s definitely a more slim fit jacket. All pockets are zippered which is a major plus for outdoor activities. Full zips often don’t have the hip pockets as zipper.

Lightweight and Warm

I was surprised with how warm this jacket is after initially thinking how thin and light it feels. The material feels soft and sturdy. I usually like to size up for jackets for layering but this jacket is true to size and I didn't need to size up. I like the zippered pockets on both sides of the hip and the left chest. The one thing I wish it had are some thumb holes. It's a great jacket for hiking or running in cooler weather and everyday use.

Super comfy, breathable jacket

I've been a longtime fan of Patagonia clothing and I'm wondering why I've never tried the R series jackets before! Fit: These are more slim fitting than their other jackets which is great if you're petite! I found the waist to be pretty well tailored. The sleeves are a bit long but that is normal for Patagonia. It would be nice if they added some thumb holes. Fabric: I'm a big fan of the Polartec Power Grid fabric. It makes this jacket very comfy, warm, and lightweight. It's perfect for when you're on the go. Temp: I tend to overheat, especially while hiking, but this jacket did a pretty good jacket regulating my temperature. It's very breathable. Pockets: Plenty of pockets and they're good sized! I can easily put my phone in them and I really like the interior pockets for things I don't want to lose. As a backpacker, I'm always on the lookout for gear that performs well and doesn't weigh a lot! This checked all the boxes for me. I love this jacket - definitely wearing it on the regular too.

Great lightweight layer

This jacket is soft and comfortable. It’s a good length (3 inches below my hip), has zippered pockets large enough to fit a cellphone, and doesn’t shrink when washed. It works well as a layer under a puffy or rain gear and can also be used when it’s just cool enough for a light outer layer. I wore the jacket for two weeks without washing and it definitely lived up to its claim to resist odors ! Even though it doesn’t have thumb holes the sleeves are long enough to stay in place while exercising.

Love this jacket!

I love this jacket! The purple is gorgeous, and gives a nice pop of color when I have been boring and worn all black (happens often). The fabric is great, soft to the touch, with a nice stretch to it. The weight of the fabric is perfect as a layering piece in cooler weather or on summer mornings by itself. Excellent jacket for hiking/walking because the fabric is light and breathable.

Great!

I love this jacket (in purple) I tried in store, they didn’t have the color I wanted, so I waited for it to come back in stock online. The material is light, the textured waffle pattern is pretty. The pockets are roomy. I’m 5’1 &140lbs bought this in medium which fits just right. If you want to layer underneath size up.

Excellent breathable insulating layer

I love the Patagonia R1 jackets. They are lightweight and excellent as a mid layer in cold weather or a top layer in more mild conditions. The grid fabric insulates while maintaining breathability, and the jacket stretches as I move. The zip pockets securely hold gloves, snacks, bandana, etc. and the zip chest pocket is an added bonus for quick grab items. I find the length to be perfect on my longer torso and the fit is true to size.

Versatile jacket with Patagonia quality

I received this Patagonia R1 jacket from REI in exchange for an honest review. (The R stands for Regulator, Patagonia's grid waffled fleece. Patagonia offers R1 and R2 variations, with R1 jackets lighter weight than R2 jackets.) I probably would not have purchased this jacket based on the website image and description, but have happily worn it nearly every day since receiving it. The website terms of “lightweight and packable” are suggestive of a garment that may be useful primarily in warm climates, not in Montana, where I live, or just as a base layer. The fleece is indeed lightweight (at about 10 oz.), but the Power Grid “waffle” fabric design makes it remarkably cozy. After reading the description of the jacket as “slim fitting,” I sized up from my usual medium to a large. Although I could have easily worn a smaller size, the large allows me to wear the jacket over a flannel shirt or light sweater. I have been wearing it inside the house on cool mornings and evenings, as well. I am cautious about garments made primarily from polyester fibers, given the odor issues of early generation garments. Patagonia uses HeiQ Pure™ odor control, which effectively minimizes body and bacterial derived odors on textiles. Having worn the jacket in cool and warm settings over multiple days, I can state that this treatment really is effective. In terms of conservation, the polyester used in this garment is entirely from recycled fibers. The jacket is designed with deep functional pockets, two of which can be accessed through the outer zippers or through the reach-in inner opening. Those outer zippers zip from the bottom up, which decreases the risk of losing small items. My only style suggestion is that thumb loops would be very useful, especially when another layer of wind or rain protection is needed. I will probably sew in loops myself for that purpose. Patagonia has long been known for responsible production of products. This jacket is no exception. The fabric is Bluesign approved, which means that safe chemistry and responsible resource management are ensured throughout the entire supply chain and it meets the OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which verifies that the finished product is free from harmful substances that could be detrimental to human health. It is important to me to know that there is an effort to protect the health of the individuals who made this jacket. The color I have – Solstice Purple – reminds me of hyacinths or camas flowers in bloom. It’s lovely!
