Very versitile
This has been my go-to hat for years. I've worn it so much that the color has faded. I really like how the skirt can be unbuttoned from the brim and let hang - it provides an additional ventilation option. I also like the draw cord - again it allows ventilation options. I've also found that the draw cord makes the hat easy to hang from my shoulder strap water bottle if I need to remove the hat while under trees for additional ventilation. I wish it was still available in yellow.
South rim to the Colorado river
A couple weeks ago, we hiked down to the Colorado river and back up in one day from the south rim of the Grand Canyon. 18 miles and 100° heat. We had to carry all of our water because the water stations were closed. I have been a fan of, a wide brim straw hat for my big hikes and backpacking. My son who does long distance running bought one of these hats and said he loved it so was some trepidation, I decided to give it a try. I didn't want to have a bad time on that hike. As it turned out, I loved it and that will be my new headgear. It was light and cool, and I was able to dip it in streams and put it back on my head a few times, I'm a fan.
Game changer for fieldwork
The Sun Runner Cap is an essential piece of gear for my long days of ecological field research in the hot, sunny, arid deserts of Utah. The lightweight and protective material has kept my neck and ears from burning. The fitted cap and chin cord keeps my hat in place in windy conditions. The versatile design has also been crucial in decreasing my exposure to dusty roads, plant materials, and other allergens throughout the day, as I've been able to tie the cape to cover my nose. I may add Velcro to the cape to cover my nose more easily though. I definitely recommend this excellent product!
One of the best trail hats on the market
Used this item for the first time on the high sierra trail and it was a game changer. I didn’t have to worry about getting my neck burned during the day and could easily take the back off in the morning and the evening. Doesn’t matter if you are a first timer or experienced hiker, this hat is awesome. The only criticism I have, is the built in vents on the side aren’t the most breathable so you can run a little warm if you have the hat on all day.

Versatile hat...great above tree-line.
I purchased the Sun Runner Cap ahead of a 3 day hut-to-hut hike of the Presidential Traverse in New Hampshire's White Mountains. Great (along with sunscreen) for running/hiking above tree-line or in open desert/chaparral. It is lightweight, protects the back of your neck, dries quickly, and offers just enough insulation for cold breezes that come through at elevation. Above tree-line, the sun can catch people by surprise, even if it appears to be cloudy. Protect yourself and avoid heat exhaustion or sun burn with the Sun Runner Cap. It goes without saying, always be prepared when venturing out into nature. Bring sturdy footwear, enough layers to account for changing weather conditions, and more water and snacks/food then you expect to use. A goal should always be to make it home at the end of the day/trip. Enjoy your time in nature...the world needs more of it!
Lightweight, packable, protective!
This is likely the 10th outdoor research hat I have bought with previous hats being in wide brim style. I saw this hat and wanted to try it, and I have really liked moving to a super compact, lightweight product that provides excellent sun coverage for my ginger skin! The hat as well made, and I'm not sure why people think it is difficult to remove and deploy the neck hood, you simply feed your head between the chinstrap and the fabric on the back and then connect to snaps on the front. Couldn't be easier! I recommend this hat to anyone looking for a full sun, coverage solution and a super lightweight package 2.9oz/84g. PS, it pairs perfectly with hooded sun shirts which are popular.
Best Sun Hat
Bought this hat about 15 years ago. Fishing from the High Sierras up to 10,000 feet elevation to out in the deep sea and even river rafting, it is amazing! The sun protection is outstanding, the comfort is unmatched and the chin strap has saved it multiple times. It's taken me this long to see some wear that has me not thinking twice about getting another one and not a cheap knock off.
I would buy this product again
I give the Sun Runner Cap 5 Stars. I am a Melanoma Survivor, and this Cap gives me the protection from the sun that I need. Itstays in place, is cool and comfortable yet flexible for all of my outdoor activities. I am almost 80 years old and continue to be active, so I really appreciate having products that assist me in pursuing the things I love to do in the outdoors!
I hate hats!
But love these!!! I've bought 4 just in case OR stops making them. I struggle to find hats to fit my massive dome, but these fit very comfortably. They're also light weight and not only block sun, mosquitoes, & ticks but also can be snugged to block wind from buffeting one's ears or retain a bit of warmth. The yellow, my fave, adds to conspicuity & safety.

This hat is much better than the old OR cowl hat
I have used this had for a few trips now, and it is much better than my older cowl hat. I particularly like that the cowl comes a bit further down and fully protects your neck. The other interesting thing I found is that it works quite effectively to keep bugs away from the back of your neck. I was able to use my bug net less.
