Hokas or Merrell Men's Moab Speed 2 GTX?
So far so good. I was a solid Hoka guy when they had their Speedgoat 5 Mid GTX even though they had issues in terms of wear and tear. Hoka discontinued the "mid" models other than their $240 version. I just bought these and are in the process of breaking them in. They are very comfortable and haven't experienced any problems. The reason I gave a 4 star review, is that I cannot provide any details as to how they hold up as I put more miles on them. They feel great, and they have a bit more support both with the soles, and the sidewalls. I also like the single "taught hook" rather than the two on the Hokas.

Comfy, Perform Well, but suspect durability
These shoes are comfortable, have decent traction, live up to the waterproof promise, and hike pretty well. But their durability is questionable. I've put a couple hundred miles of trail hiking on them and the soles are starting to delaminate. I'm hoping that it was just a bad batch and if I replace them, the next pair will be better. But this pair is going back to REI. The only other slight ding is that they could use a better heel hold system. If I tie them tight enough to hold my heel back on downhills, they pinch a bit at the tie point. Not a deal breaker by any stretch, and I haven't had any real issues, but just a critique. FWIW, I added a pair of cork SOLE insoles and it made them much more stable and comfortable for longer hikes. Definitely a worthwhile addition to these shoes (or any performance shoe, for that matter). I have a wide size 10 foot and the 10W fit better than any other light hiker, trail running shoe I've tried.

Experienced All-Terrain, all-weather hiker

I’ve been doing overnight hiking & camping trips in some of the most difficult areas at Red River Gorge in Daniel Boone National Forest for the past eight years. Never have I had a better experience than this past one when I bought these shoes. We received over an inch and a half of rain, but it was no issue for these shoes. I accidentally submerged them a few times while performing run-off creek crossings, and my feet remained dry. The traction in loose conditions was good, as was the breathability. I did weeks of research on multiple brands before pulling the trigger on buying these, and I am pleased with my decision. I highly recommend them to anyone else, too!

They do not hold well to actual hiking.

They fall apart if you actually hike. Their water resistance doesn’t last long and requires constant spraying to keep them that way. The outer soul is a thin layer glued to the mid soul that separates easily, as well as the toe portion. So if you plan on going miles of hiking, hard paths, rocky areas, hiking in the rain… these are not the ones.

Moab to Hike the Hills

This is my second pair of Merrell high top hiking boots. Both have been amazingly comfortable to wear any where for long periods. This Moab binds well to my foot and ankle to keep me steady on uneven surfaces. My first adventure with them was to Blue Ridge Parkway where I hiked over wet boulders, roots, mud and sand. Never slipped or tripped going up and down 50 degree slopes. I am a life long believer in Merrell foot wear

Close to great

Pros: Great traction from vibram and lug design, super light, looks cool. Cons: Colors don’t match product photos very well, they are much darker and more blue irl. Ankle support is very minimal but squeezes my ankle bones uncomfortably if too tight. It seems to be designed for a thick foot because I really have to cinch them down to get my foot to not slide forward in the foot bed going down hill. But at that point they’re uncomfortably tight. Coming from a product design & dev background, I get it’s difficult to make a shoe fit all shapes and sizes but I feel like they could do a better job with this especially offering a wide version. Even with a very thick sock my foot still feels like it needs to be much thicker to really have it fit like a glove. They should really focus on that aspect of their shoes because I found this true with the standard speed 2 version as well.

Would like to love this Hiking Shoe

I bought the Hiking Boot for a trip to Peru and a 7 day hike of around 4-8 miles of moderate hiking a day. I bought them 2 weeks before the trip and wore them around the house and general day walking of less than 3 hrs a day. The shoes felt fantastic on and broke in really easy. The problem came on the trip. 4 days into the hike I noticed the toe flap starting to separate and a gap forming between the 2 molds on the arch side of the shoe. After the complete trip, I noticed the Arch of both shoes have collapsed. I am 6'0 and about 230lbs, and flat footed so I am hard on arches either way. The problem is, this is a 2-3 week old shoe with little mileage compared to my other hikers. I have attached pictures. Again, the shoes were comfortable, broke in nicely and the waterproofing worked fine. They are light and I found them breathable but the construction was a severe disappointment at this price range. I am hoping Merrell will help with this problem

Great for Urban Hiking

I bought these for urban hiking. I love that they are light weight, easy to pack, and look great. The Vibram sole gives me that extra support I need to spend all day on hard concrete. I also appreciate that they come in wide sizes, so I don't feel like I'm stuffed into a boot that is not made for me.

1 year torture test, lineman and hiker

After a full year of daily wear as an electrical lineman, and hiking on weekends, I feel equipped to give a good honest review of these boots under harsh wear. After a year (of my wear), they are toast. I have accelerated the wear by not treating them solely as hiking boots. However, in this time here is what I have learned. The glue holding the sole on near the toe is the first thing to go. Both of my boots had to be reglued much too early. They are incredibly comfortable and versatile. They look fantastic. The soles are much softer than a moab 3, but that’s by design, not a flaw. Just something to consider for longevity’s sake. Waterproofing did not last long in my experience. After a year of abuse, I have another new pair in my locker at work waiting on me when these finally give out. The soles are glued on and the tread is almost entirely gone but I’m seeing how long I can stretch them. To have been essentially abused, I’m very impressed. Consider my review a torture test. My brand new pair that’s waiting on me also has a weakly glued toe though, so that is a design flaw. Overall though, great boot. When these blow out I’ll grab my new pair and give them another go.
