Moab’s are great from the get go!

My Merrill’s were great for hiking without having to break them in. They are supportive and comfortable and we’re able to grip the terrain I was hiking….both rock and gravel.

Not bad, but confusing fit

Overall, a good shoe. I am disappointed in the sizing / fit. I wear a men's size 12. I recently purchased a pair of Moab 3 Waterproof (NOT Gore-Tex) and there is a distinct difference in fit. The toe box in the GoreT-Tex is "sloppy" as you might be able to see in the photos. The fit in the Moab 3 Waterproof is spot on. It's as if the 2 pair are different sizes. Not sure what to do, but Merrell asked me to rate the shoes, so I did.

Walked 30k steps on my 3rd Day in Tokyo

Comfortable Shoe. Only had one day where it rained. Wasn’t really enough to test the Gortex though. I bought for this trip and will save them only when I go on vacation. The only reason I didn’t give a 5-Star was due to fabric bunching up above the heal. I didn’t feel it, but believe they should do a better job of securing it to the liner or whatever is under it.

Poor quality inner heal cup stitching

The Merrell Moab 2 and 3 hiking shoes have a major flaw with inferior stitching in the heal cup area. The stitching across the heal area (about 3/4"-1" down from the top of the inner heal) splits open after normal use, and then the thin black liner material lifts and frays. The shoes I have purchased all exhibit this design flaw after using the shoes less than 6 months. Other than that, I like the shoes. MERRELL: PLEASE REDESIGN THE HEAL CUP AREA STITCHING AND LINER MATERIAL ON ALL NEW MOAB SHOES IN THE FUTURE!

Built to Last like a Michelin Tire

The water proof GorTex shoe fits snug for my size 10 feet. I had to search for an insert to exaggerate the center arch slightly to take the weight off the front of my foot. This is NOT a negative of the shoe. It's me, My foot. Shoe material is extremely well built at around the shoe/foot as well as the grippy bottom. If I were to long, long hike on away trips, I'd order "wide" and 1/2 size UP. This is the 3rd pair I have bought over, many, many years. The last pair was used as a landscaping, hardscaping, work around the home projects for so, so many years, I wore the bottom grips - flat. Best!

These are my first hiking shoes, and they’re great

I’ve only had Merrell slip-on shoes (Jungle Mocs) previously, but I needed a pair of rugged, waterproof, comfortable, non-boot hiking shoes for a trip to Machu Picchu and the Galápagos Islands, so I decided to try these one-half size larger since I’d be wearing thick hiking socks. They exceeded my expectations. I broke them in prior to the trip but really didn’t need to - they were comfortable from the first wearing - and the extra toe wiggle room only added to the comfort. Unlike some shoes when you go up a half-size, my heel didn’t slip in the slightest. We’ll see how they hold up longer-term

Fails to Perform in Wet Conditions

I had high hopes for the Merrell Moab 3 with Gore-Tex, given their legacy as a go-to boot for many hikers. While they offer decent comfort for casual use, my experience revealed significant, deal-breaking flaws in key performance areas, particularly when faced with challenging, wet terrain. The most significant failure is the waterproofing. Despite the Gore-Tex branding, which implies robust protection, these shoes are merely water-resistant. During a hike in a steady downpour, they held up for about 45 minutes before my socks were completely soaked. The sole's performance on wet rock is alarmingly poor. While hiking over damp stones and roots, the grip was practically non-existent, making for a treacherous and slippery experience akin to walking on ice. This lack of reliable traction is a major safety concern for anyone hiking in variable weather or on trails that aren't perfectly dry. On my very first hike, the mesh fabric on the upper sustained a small rip from a minor scrape against a rock. A shoe designed for the trail should be able to withstand this kind of incidental contact. This early failure raises serious questions about the long-term durability of the materials. Ironically for a shoe that lets water in so easily, it struggles to let heat out. In hot, dry conditions, my feet quickly became overheated and sweaty, indicating that the materials do not offer adequate ventilation for warm-weather hiking. I cannot recommend the Merrell Moab 3 for serious hikers or anyone who ventures out in less-than-perfect conditions. The failures in waterproofing, wet-surface traction, and durability make it an unreliable and potentially unsafe choice for its intended purpose. However, if your activities are limited to short, fair-weather walks on well-maintained, dry trails, the out-of-the-box comfort might be suitable for your needs. For anything more demanding, I would strongly advise looking elsewhere.
