4th pair of Clifton 9s, each and everyone had a quality problem. The soul of the shoe is made of a soft Eva like material with inserted stronger rubber treads, but unlike the other GXT variants like the Speedgoat, the Clifton doesn’t have a solid rubber soul. The problem is within a week of constant use, the rubber tread inserts start to peal up and fall off leaving you with a super soft Eva only sole which is similar to a dollar store pair of flip flops that will be gone before you can walk a mile. Why 4 pairs you say? I bought my son and I a matching set and my daughter a different one. I bought the two for my son and I online so I simply returned them and got him a speedgoat gtx which he is still wearing months later with no significant signs of wear. I bought a unique color set of Clifton 9 and hoped my previous exp was just a weird run thing but literally after 2 weeks of office only work, the treads are falling off. Looking back on my purchase history, I realized my daughter’s shoes were also Clifton 9s and can you guess what I noticed (besides a much dirtier pair of kid shoes)? Yep. Almost all the tread was gone and being only 11 she never bothered to look at the bottom of the shoes. Clearly Hoka had a serious design flaw with either the glue they use to attach the tread of the I compatibility of the Eva foam and the rubber tread combined with the glue. Either way, AVOID HOKA CLIFTON 9s unless you like to buy expensive shoes every two weeks or constantly doing returns….trying to upload images
I’m 285 6”2. I bought these because I work at a hospital. I walk around ten miles a day, also have to go in wet areas often. These have been the most comfortable shoes I ever bought. They have keep my feet dry 100% standing in water for ten to fifteen minutes straight.
It works great to my low back pain when walking. Highly recommend !!
Purchased GTX Clifton 9 in Feb 2025. I have another pair of Hokas that I work out in so these shoes are used solely for walking. I’ve experienced the exact same issue as one of the reviewers mentions below, the hardened tread has separated from the base of the sole. Additionally I’ve read other reviews from other sources with the same issue so this appears to be a common design defect. I took the shoes back to my local REI
Comparing my regular Clifton 9 to the GTX, I'll say the GTX isn't quite the same fit and doesn't have quite the same feel as the regular model. That said, I'm happy with my choice as it gives me the all weather protection that the regular version doesn't. I'd buy it again.
Comfortable sneaker but it runs 1/2 size smaller so I need to size up vs the regular Clifton.
