This is the best light and very breathable jacket. Probably the best cross country skiing and touring jacket I have in my collection. I wish they make it in more colours. I am waiting for some vibrant reds or yellows. I have this jacket in light brownish ochre colour and I love it. But I would like to change it up sometimes. Bottom line: I highly recommend this jacket. It is my go-to item in winter.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Seriously fantastic functional hoody! I just summited Mt. Whitney and used this jacket for my top layer as there was no rain or snow forecasted. It was SO warm I ended up only needing it for the last few miles before the 99 switchback when there was a very cool patch—plus hiking in the dark. I use it walking my dog on cold mornings. I’m 6’1 and sized up to a xl for layering room and it’s perfect!
Just the right insulation for spring / fall hikes when you need some insulation but also breathability. Loved taking this jacket on many hikes when I needed an extra layer. It is a trim fit so it fits quite cozy close to the body.
Fantastic jacket for ranging conditions. I use it daily for cool morning walks; and it was my mid-layer for hiking Mt. Whitney. This jacket keeps me very warm and I love the huge chest pocket. I sized up for a roomy fit and love how easily I can layer.
I’ve worn the proton jacket as a standalone piece for nearly every single one of my skiing days this season (~80) in -5C to -27C and winds from 0 to ~60kmh. Paired with a thin synthetic shirt, it’s the goldilocks layer: perfect insulation and amazing breathability. Warm even if you’ve worked hard on the up and sweated a bit! Dries fast. Throw an extra layer on top for the descent when it’s cold or you stop moving and you’re SO good. Special mention to that chest pocket—great to fit a phone and snag the shots, or a snack and avoid that hanger.
I use it for cross country skiing. I bought the Blaze colour. The red is also nice. Finally, Arcteryx made some vibrant colours. However, I am still waiting for the Proton SL hoody to be made in these nice orangy and reddish and yellowish hues. Please, Arcteryx, make them happen! Back to this Proton jacket: it just works for what it is supposed to do. I like the fact that it has 4! pockets! Some jackets hav no hand pockets, and I would never buy such a pocketless garment. I do recommend this Proton Hoody. It is functional and my go to jacket when the temperature is in lower double digit range.
[Employee of arcteryx] It's an absolute winner! The fit is spot on, incredibly light, and highly breathable—perfect for all kinds of activities. It offers great water resistance with its DWR finish, works as a solid windbreaker, and layers effortlessly. Definitely a piece I’d buy again!
Fits true to size. Very warm for its weight and compactness. Great as a light warm casual layer as well as an active layer for colder ski touring days. Very versatile
The Proton is by far my favorite jacket, ever. This is because it’s lightweight yet incredibly warm and breathable. It’s great for cardio outside in the winter and looks good for a casual jacket as well. This is not a super packable jacket so it’s not the best for something like backpacking. For other applications it’s just the best. As always, Arc’teryx has nailed the fit on this with a nice athletic cut that feels like it’s custom-tailored.
I love this as a midlayer for winter hiking, snowboarding and splitboarding. It's really breathable which helps maintain a comfortable temperature- I tour/hike fast (no talking or stopping!) It's a warmer layer, so will pair with the Satoro Merino Crew in cold weather -8 to 0*, and the Lana long sleeve for warmer temps. I've worn consistently for two seasons (120+ days) and have had no pilling. My only con is if you sweat needs a strong detergent as it holds onto smells (as I find most synthetic fabrics do (I have a sensitive nose.)
