[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Seriously fantastic functional hoody! I just summited Mt. Whitney and used this jacket for my top layer as there was no rain or snow forecasted. It was SO warm I ended up only needing it for the last few miles before the 99 switchback when there was a very cool patch—plus hiking in the dark. I use it walking my dog on cold mornings. I’m 6’1 and sized up to a xl for layering room and it’s perfect!
Fantastic jacket for ranging conditions. I use it daily for cool morning walks; and it was my mid-layer for hiking Mt. Whitney. This jacket keeps me very warm and I love the huge chest pocket. I sized up for a roomy fit and love how easily I can layer.
I use it for cross country skiing. I bought the Blaze colour. The red is also nice. Finally, Arcteryx made some vibrant colours. However, I am still waiting for the Proton SL hoody to be made in these nice orangy and reddish and yellowish hues. Please, Arcteryx, make them happen! Back to this Proton jacket: it just works for what it is supposed to do. I like the fact that it has 4! pockets! Some jackets hav no hand pockets, and I would never buy such a pocketless garment. I do recommend this Proton Hoody. It is functional and my go to jacket when the temperature is in lower double digit range.
I love this as a midlayer for winter hiking, snowboarding and splitboarding. It's really breathable which helps maintain a comfortable temperature- I tour/hike fast (no talking or stopping!) It's a warmer layer, so will pair with the Satoro Merino Crew in cold weather -8 to 0*, and the Lana long sleeve for warmer temps. I've worn consistently for two seasons (120+ days) and have had no pilling. My only con is if you sweat needs a strong detergent as it holds onto smells (as I find most synthetic fabrics do (I have a sensitive nose.)
I hiked over 6 miles yesterday wearing this jacket over 1,500 ft elevation gain with 45-56 degree F weather. I usually overheat pretty easily, but this jacket is so light and airy I didn't get too hot and was able to wear it the entire time. Some points there was a cold breeze that hit, and felt comfortable still. I only noticed because of my exposed face and hands. Only complaint it does sorta keep smell from such a workout. Otherwise it suited its purpose and material is so soft and not bulky feeling like my down jacket.
The Proton is by far my favorite jacket, ever. This is because it’s lightweight yet incredibly warm and breathable. It’s great for cardio outside in the winter and looks good for a casual jacket as well. This is not a super packable jacket so it’s not the best for something like backpacking. For other applications it’s just the best. As always, Arc’teryx has nailed the fit on this with a nice athletic cut that feels like it’s custom-tailored.
It’s a waste of money. I bought this not only for the product but the brand. “Arc’teryx” is renowned for their quality products and warranties but they aren’t what they once were. I have multiple Arc’teryx products and my proton coat disintegrated. The fabric is poor quality , I can’t believe it’s even advertised as “climbing and high output activities” it’s destroyed and I wore it to the grocery store! I emailed Arc’teryx about issues and they refused to honour their warranty on the fabric. The material literally rips apart under any strain. The main zipper split after 1 year and both pocket zipper broke shortly after. Unless their quality dramatically improves it’s not worth the price. Do better Arc’teryx.
I really like the proton, as it's everything you get in the Atom. However, you have a chest pocket with the same insulation, which makes a huge difference! I went up a size as I have large shoulders but smaller hips :)
Love my proton hoody! I am 5’3” and the small is perfect! Love the design as it give you freedom of movement without bunching up. It’s soft and warm and just a beautiful hoody I will wear for years!0
When I first got this jacket it was perfect, everything I was looking for to keep me warm as an active layer while climbing throughout 4 seasons. Until it ripped in the back when the jacket snagged on a branch causing a full clean tear of 3" x 3" I'd heard good things about Arcteryx repair but they completely fell short saying all they could do is send me tenacious tape which I had already used and it peels due to where a harness sits. Even hand washing the garment causes the tape to peel. Went in store and the reps looked at it and said to open a repair/warranty which I had already done. Unless you are wearing this under a shell I'd be weary of how "durable" they say this insulating layer is, especially if you are a climber.
