The color bleeds and stains of it gets wet. I have an older color scheme and the orange straps and edges stained my brand new light gray Nike hoodie and my t-shirt as well. I have orange streaks all up and down from the shoulders to the hem. It comes out so it’s not completely ruined, but it’s very frustrating. Prior to this I’ve had the bag for years and absolutely loved it. Never noticed this before but I’ve also never gotten it wet before, that I recal. The color staining is really the only downside of this bag.
So I took this bag to Europe and holy-buckets, was it the best! It can hold so much, like so so so much!! We’re talking a medium zip up sweatshirt, a medium (real) jean jacket, a small hip purse, a book, over the ear headphones, a 1/2 gallon ziplock bag of electronics, phone, sunglasses, and a small bag of jewelry. Plus a few more items! Also, it has a double zipper so I could use a luggage lock easily and it folds up really small, so you can pack it in your suitcase and have the perfect bag for daily adventures. It was also very comfortable for my shorter body. My only wish is that it had a chest strap as I love those, but it’s not needed.
The good: I've been using this backpack as my gym bag for the past two years, and it still holds up perfectly fine. I have also used it on occasion to carry some heavy, pointy objects that would tear apart a low-quality bag, but this one help up fine. As long as you treat it well, it works great for travelling, gym stuff, commuting, etc. The side pocket that the bag is supposed to fold into is great for small items like keys, wallets, headphones, etc., and if you need to fold it all up, it is extremely compact. The meh: As I write this, two years later, there is a tiiiiny hole in the bottom from where I accidentally dropped a screwdriver on it. This was completely user-error, though, but it does show that the bag's only as good as you treat it.
I've had this pack for almost seven months now and I use it almost daily. For the most part, the bag still works, but only partially. I can still use it as a stuff sack and the packable portion still works. Where I have problem is the inner lining, probably what makes it water resistent started peeling off a couple of months ago., plus it somehow got a small hole at the bottom and in the front. As for the features - I like the zipper pouch/packable pouch being on the side and not on the top like it has in the past. This is handy because I often keep certain items in the pouch for weeks. I also like the expandable pocket in the front. I use it for quick and easy storage and grabbing things quickly. In the end, for the price, I expected this to last longer than it did - this is the main reason I gave it only 3 stars. In all honesty, I feel confident in saying that it got 4 months of solid use before falling apart. I am and have been overseas, so I have not been able to go to REI and see what they can do.
Compact like a small purse when compressed and feather light when empty. I agree that the original was a better design and would have been happy to buy many more as gifts if at least the newer version had a better variety of color choices. I recently looked over this one, if you didn't have the original, you will likely thoroughly like this, but I much prefer the location of the zipper on the original as I could still reach the contents easily while wearing it. For the price and almost daily use traveling around the world for 3 years, pulling this out as a super lightweight option, it has held up just as well as my Osprey bags with no tears. I primarily use it to combine my austere weather essentials like a generously thick 850 down puffy for sub zero temperatures, gortex outershell, wool socks and 20oz canteen.
The older model of this bag was wonderful! I had it for years and used it in all sorts of situations. It finally started looking a little worn (still works fine), but I thought I'd get a new one for travel etc, was so disappointed to find it'd been discontinued! I purchased this one (new version) instead, and its fine, but just not as good. Biggest issue being there is now no secure, small inner pocket. The only pocket on this version for your wallet and small things is a up/down zip pocket on the outside. Very easy to be pickpocketed or even just catch the zipper and everything falls out! If I'd have known the old one was being discontinued I would have gotten 2! If you never had the old model this is a fine, lightweight stuff pack for day trips (urban or in nature).
used this as my daypack for a 3 month europe backpacking trip along with my 40 L osprey. this. thing. is. incredible. it fits SO much stuff, kept everything dry even through the worst windiest weather, and is comfortable to wear. not a single tear despite getting dragged around. the front pocket to be fair isn’t ideal for a water bottle but mine fit easily inside and i kept sunnies, pens, maps and all sorts of other things there instead. couldn’t recommend more
This stuff sack is great I got it for my trip to Japan from the Eastern US, folded up it fits nicely in my 40L REI travel bag in a small interior pocket I mainly used it as a daily carry bag so I could leave my other bag at the hotel
I will ALWAYS pack this to take on a trip. I can fit it packed into itself in my 1L patagonia black hole waist pack along with my wallet and keys and take it into the city. Then if I buy souvenirs I can pull it out and pack it so I don’t have to walk around with gift bags digging into my hands. I love this bag so much I bought two just in case I travel with a friend and they forget a bag. It packs so small I would never not take it. I love it. It’s comfortable to wear despite the straps being so thin and it has a nice little side zip pocket for your phone or something to that effect. This bag is worth it.
Please bring back the original version of this bag which has the pocket on the inside of the bag. The outside pocket can be a nice idea however the pocket is shallow and when you open it on the side everything falls out. Poor design. The bag is great and lightweight and my favorite bag, but in the older version not this one.
