More reasonably-priced than the Patagonia black hole bag. I wish I could take the better features from each, but I would still change some things besides. Great durability. Easy access, probably better than the Patagonia. I like that the handles are removable (unlike the Patagonia); I wish the shoulder straps were removable (like the Patagonia) - their being integral requires adding that giant pocket to the lid and makes the lid bulky and difficult to live out of. The four cinch straps/clips are pointless. The handle straps are too long, I was always wanting to grab the bag closer to its body for better control and the long handle straps counter stability. Odds are very good you're carrying this as a carry-on alongside a normal backpack which is your "personal item". You will absolutely need to purchase a shoulder strap, the backpack straps are unsuitable for this purpose, both in terms of length and ergonomics. It's fine, they were close but it isn't a total winner. The Patagonia has similar usability issues, so save yourself a few bucks and get this one instead. REI: Start stocking shoulder straps.

It's been a workhorse!

When I bought this bag about five years ago, I wondered how well it'd hold up. I'm here to say it's been a workhorse! It's carried my gear all over. It still looks and works great after all this time. From an epic week long canoe trip down the Altamaha, to multiple long distance adventures, it's carried my loads and held up well. Like the old Timex watch commercials, it's taken a licking and keeps on ticking. It's proven to be just the right size for so many of my adventures & I like that it can be carried so many different ways. When I was on REI's website, I looked to see if they still make it and was so glad to see they still do. Cheers!

Best duffel on the market

I looked around a lot before getting this one. I now have it in the 40- and 60-liter sizes. It's the best one I've come across for my needs. I use it for plane travel, car travel, car camping. You name it. It has a great combination of durable fabric and zippers where needed and lighter ones were not needed to save weight and cost. Unlike with other duffels, the lid opening is the entire top, all the way to the edge, for easier access. I attached a really comfortable shoulder strap I already had to a couple of the fabric loops to carry it shoulder-bag style, which is the most comfortable way to carry it in my experience. Awesome duffel!

Works Great with Eagle Creek Packing Cubes

Just completed my first trip with this bag and was happy with all elements of the performance. Most importantly, the dimensions of this bag worked well with the set of Eagle Creek packing cubes that I already had. Pictured here are small and medium sized cubes. The medium garment folder also fit perfectly. The built-in carry handle allows you to forego the detachable handles that are shown in the picture, and this streamlines the bag. Getting the handles on and off is a bit of a task, but I guess that would help prevent accidental detachment. The amount of space worked well for a four-day trip that included varied activities (in-town dining, hiking, etc.). This was a car trip, so I wasn't very judicious about packing decisions. Hiking shoes were carried separately, and shoes will definitely eat into the storage space on this size bag. I can see taking the bag on a 7-10 day trip if I was packing smarter.

Perfect bag for a light traveler

This is really the ideal travel size for someone who is looking to travel with minimal hassle. Easily fits a weeks worth of clothing and pair of shoes, plus a laptop. Zippers are strong and can support stuffing the duffel full. My only slight complaint is that there is not an external sleeve for a water bottle. You can put a small bottle in the sleeve for stowing the backpack straps, but the pack will sit a little uncomfortable on your back.

unbelievably good bag

Holds a lot. Comfortable to carry as backpack. Well made. Looks good. Handles where you want them. Nice mesh pockets inside. The cinch straps pull everything snug no matter how much or little is in it. All of the straps either come off or tuck in pockets. Folds up nicely, to stow or store in its own well-made case. We've needed to check it on occasion, shows zero signs of wear. Folks have stopped me in the airport and told me they like the bag. Never happened before. Even the young woman at the Alaska desk said she liked it and had already bid on one at an Alaska charity auction.

Great duffel bag

I purchased this mainly to use for work after a year it's held up perfectly no rips. Zippers are strong, it comes with carrying and backpack straps. When I use it for camping I can fit 3 days worth of clothes/supplies and an extra pair of shoes with no problem. Would recommend buying a set of s/m/l travels bags to keep stuff organized other than that no complaints!

Great Bag, Strap Closure could be better

I like the big Haul REI bags, this is the 4th one I've bought. Each of my kids have one as well as my wife and I. My one criticism about this new model is they changed the strap closure to velcro instead of snaps. I prefer the snaps for longevity. I'm not a fan of velcro for any application; it just never holds uo with use and time. Besides that, it is a great bag and I love being able to carry it as a backpack using the shoulder straps when I need more use of my hands while traveling. The REI Big Haul is much more affordable than otger brands and the quality is the same or better in my experience.

Great bag

Excellent product. I have used this duffle/backpack for over a year. The quality materials are durable and comfortable. The design is perfect with one outside zipper pouch and two inside. Sometimes manufacturers overdo or neglect zippers altogether. It is also the perfect size for travel. My daughter borrowed my bag for a 5 day trip to Arizona from East Coast. She was so impressed with it that she immediately bought one on return. I am 5’6” 115 lbs and can easily glide through an airport with it on my back and stow it in the overhead without effort. Guess what? Traveling son saw it and now he owns one. In my family alone five people have purchased one. So there - you cannot go wrong.

multiple ways to carry

I used this bag on a four day trip to copenhagen for the half marathon. It was easy to fit a everything that I needed. I love the fact it can be carried as a backpack and the straps adjust the tightness of the bag's cargo. It is well made and a has comfy fit being used with the backpack straps. The airline that I flew only allowed one bag-no additional pocketbooks or laptop bags- so I was forced to use this bag for everything that I would need to bring. In the 40L I put an extra pair of sneakers and a small umbrella in addition to five outfits I and toiletries that I brought with me. My iPad, a canteen and light jacket fit easily as well. I really love this bag and will be using it again as my carry-on in the future.

Smart travel bag

The big haul 40 is just the right size for me for weekend and 3 to 4 day road trips. Super thought out design. Many great features, 2 great small individual compartments inside the top zip flap for toiletries and small clothing items. 1 zip pocket on the outside for quick access items. Hidden padded shoulder straps which when taken out gives you another area for maps or magazines. The use of toggles on the ends of straps whether it be the hand or shoulder straps is ingenious. Bag can also be cinched down for smaller loads. Construction and material seems to be durable and of good quality..
