Almost as good as the classic Diamond Tread models
As a long time Chaco consumer, I've probably worn through 6 pairs over the past 20 years. I originally purchased Chacos for superior performance in wet conditions, but over the years this brand has managed to lose its performance creds in favor of pure fashion instead. These new Rapid Pros defy that trend, with nearly Diamond Tread-like grip on wet rocks (yet no marks!) and beefier construction thanks to Vibram sole and improved strap attachment points. The Vibram sole is a tremendous improvement in stability, comfort, and grip vs. standard Chaco sandals in all circumstances. I use them in Canadian Shield country across rocks mud dirt gravel and sand, frequently in and out of the water, and so far so good. Not enough time to judge durability yet, but initial returns are promising. Thank you Chaco for getting back on top of the river guide sandal market!
Great quality sandal, comfort meh
Full disclosure: I am a TEVA person. My last pair, purchased about 2000, finally wore out. When I went on REI and looked at the new TEVA reviews, I was blown away by the amount of reviews that described low quality- with photos of “strap tabs” out of the sole! After doing some research, Chaco came up time and again as a higher quality “the way TEVA used to be” kinda sandal. So fast forward, I have had my Chacos for about 3 months: PROS- quality build, bullet proof. Tread is a nice Vibram that reduces slide on slick rock and pebble descents. Good colors, vibe is cool. CONS- comfort just isn’t there. The straps feel harsh and I needed to callous up before they were pain free. Strap system is clunky, harder to slip on and off than the TEVA system (Thatcher had that one dialed). Weight. These bad boys weigh double that of my TEVAS. Not a big deal, until it is. Overall I’m happy with my Chacos. If I get 20 years out of them, I guess they can plant me with them strapped to my feet.
