Super warm
I love these mittens, which I ordered in forest shade (the green is perfect!). I take a 30 minute walk each day during my workdays, and have worn these each day when it's below 20 degrees F (I am in Minnesota). Three of those days were below zero with windchill, and these mittens kept my hands nice and warm. It helps that there is a higher level of insulation on the top of the hand too. I have several pairs of warm mittens, but these blow the rest out of the water. Highly recommend!
Surprisingly warm
I have Raynaud’s and I am constantly searching for warm mitts. To give context, I spent most of my adult life living and snowboarding in Tahoe and now reside in Northeastern MN, so I know my appendage-wear. I’ve always bought decently expensive ski mitts and even tried ridiculously expensive name-brand electric mitts a few years ago (verdict: nope; batteries don’t last). Any review I give on any pair of mitts is with the understanding that I use some form of hand warmers when it’s below roughly 45-50° because my Raynaud’s is pretty bad. I bought three different mittens this year (two from other retailers) in the hopes that I would find something decent. I expected these to be the worst of the three and only for use on warm winter days. The other two are far more expensive and name brand (hint: begins with an O and an R). I can’t even believe it, but these unassuming little things are so much better than all the rest! Like MILES. went for a decently long hike with my dog and a friend yesterday with the temps in the teens and ridiculously blowing wind, and again this morning with crazy wind and lower single digits and cannot believe how well these mitts perform. The wind doesn’t go through them and they seem to insulate better than far more expensive and bulky ski and performance mittens (I’ve walked around like an idiot with two different mitts on my hands on and off now for a couple of weeks). There is one caveat that REI can do better next year—there are no grips on the palms. Please do that next season! but as long as you’re aware and realize you have to hold that steering wheel extra tight or grab the door knob just a little harder, nbd. I would imagine that inside a pair of over-mitts, they will be indestructible in way below-zero temps. I know they don’t look like much, but you will be pleasantly surprised!
Warm and cute, but disappointing durability
The good: I wore these in a Buffalo winter, and they kept my hands warmer than any gloves I’ve ever owned. The so-so: These mittens are also adorable, but since I hadn’t worn mittens since childhood, it took some time to adjust and figure out what I could do with them. They’re perfect for walks and clearing off the car, but as expected, dexterity is limited—making them impractical for driving or other precise tasks. The not so good: As another reviewer mentioned, the fleece cuff ripped at the seam when I was putting them on, which seems to be a workmanship issue. While this doesn’t affect the warmth or functionality, I expected better quality for $50 mittens.
Thin, not warm
Maybe the other reviewers got mittens from a different manufacturer, but mine are very thin and not warm at all. They don’t look as puffy as the photo. I wonder if they have any down in them at all. I went out today to shovel my car out and it was 22 degrees. My fingers were frozen and stayed that way, even with all the activity. I got the black ones. Unfortunately I cut the “tag” off so I could use them. I will try to return because they are useless.
might be ok for cooler days but not cold days
Very thin. Not as warm as others said they were. I have Raynauds and these mittens are far from being the warmest I have ever owned. I needed to add hot hands in order to wear them. They’re nice but not meant for colder days or weather
High Quality
I bought these to be my go to winter mitts here in freezing western Mass and they pretty well fit the bill. I personally run cold so those of you with warmer furnaces will have yet better experiences. I have worn them multiple times on 1-2 hour walks in weather between 0-20. I was mostly comfortable for up to an hour in 0 with no wind; at 25 with steady cold wind, I was fine for an hour but ultimately a little less than comfortable, but not unmanageably so. The mitts themselves have a comfortable feel and seem well made. On some of the frigid days I've also worn them with silk glove liners - anything bulkier wouldn't work - and that adds to their efficiency. I took a gamble on them and, I believe, I won.
WAY too small
I ordered L size and the mittens were so small that I could barely get them over my wrists. They were also too small for my wife and for my mother in law, who has small hands. What’s the deal?
Not waterproof
These did not end up being waterproof. I was outside in the snow with my kids for an hour or so and my hands were soaked.
Super warm mittens
Best mittens I have ever owned! I always have numb fingers in the cold weather due to Raynaud’s disease. These goose down mittens have kept my fingers warm for the whole time that I am outside. Highly recommend them if you have the same issue.
Too narrow for men and cuff is too tight
These mittens are listed as unisex but skew more toward a woman's size. I'm a male of average build and normally wear a size large in a glove so ordered that size. These feel more like a medium and are very difficult to put on: The elastic cuff opening is quite restrictive. The inside compartment is also narrow and doesn't allow much finger movement. In colder temperatures I like to move my thumb to the main compartment and form a lose fist to keep all fingers warm. Not really possible with this mitten without first removing most of the mitten and attempting to squeeze the thumb into the main compartment. Suggest REI make these gloves wider and also relax the elastic cuff to make it easier to put on. Other than that, the gloves are warm and the down makes a big difference in retaining heat, although the glove is not very breathable, which will likely cause sweat to be retained in milder temperatures.
