I bought these impulsively last year before a backpacking trip with some winter weather. I ended up leaving them at home at the time. And I've been waiting for an opportunity to bust them out. I visited Yellowstone over the holidays with my family, brought them but never felt like I needed them. Fast forward to late April, almost 6 months later. These $100 gloves staring at me every time I walk by my gear shelf. I'm invited to attempt a peak in the Tahoe Basin during a winter weather advisory. Snow showers, temps in the 20s, wind gusts up to 35. I throw these in my pack "just in case". I was using a pair of medium weight gloves with leather palms and water resistant back. They wetted out on the scramble less than 2 miles in. In comes the star of the show. These gloves. Over the next 10-12 hours they admirably kept my hands warm, dry and dexterous. Being an amateur in the snow at one point I made the mistake of dropping my right glove and accidentally kicking a bunch of snow inside. I thought I was done for, but they persisted and it wasn't long before the heat of my hand had dried them out again. I wasn't even using the liners through this. There was another moment where the exterior had gotten wet enough and the gloves were actually frozen with my hands inside of them. Still WARM. Good grief. I wonder what the limit of these gloves is, and I am beyond happy with this purchase and expect them to serve me on many great adventures. TL;DR: Gloves are completely bomber in heinous conditions and saved my hike.
REI recommended these gloves to me for the sole purpose of snow blowing. I was so tired of coming into the house with wet, sloppy cold hands from using inferior “water proof” gloves that simply don’t work. These gloves fit perfectly & come up the wrist very well. You will not get any cold drafts slipping in when using these gloves. They are thick but not too thick & they are incredibly warm. You will be able to easily grasp items with ease without any restrictions. I honestly was a little weary of paying a higher price for winter gloves compared to local store brands but these are worth every single penny and then some. You will not be disappointed if you purchase these & you will probably say WOW just like I did. Buy with confidence. These Switchback GTX gloves just simply work. Period.
I bought these gloves because I have Raynauds and on Dec 14 2025 the winter weather here in Illinois caused my fingers serious serious pain. Ordered these the next day and have zero regrets! NONE! I love how they have a liner and if need be I simply slip off the larger outer gloves and roll with the liners. They allow modest texting and some finesse work as compared to the outer shells. My fingers haven’t had a bout with freezing since I got them. I will review these again after this winter as I have yet to shovel snow with them but have worn them in bitter cold without adverse effect.
I ordered these gloves just prior to the big winter storm of 2026. I wore them for hours while using my snow blower and shoveling. In all I shoveled 20+ hours in them and they held up, no signs of wear and my hands were never cold despite long periods in sub 20 degree temperatures. The longer gauntlet kept cold air and snow out of them. They're a little bulkier than I expected but once I wore them a short while I got used to them and had no issues working in them. I did not need or use the liners when working in these temps but it was nice knowing I could have made them even warmer.
So far so good. Summited Mt. Whitney in single digit temperatures and these gloves kept my hands good. Cactus-to-Clouds trail Skyline section while snowing probably around in the upper 20⁰'s. Gal I was hiking with had light weight insulated gloves and her fingers were freezing going numb. Put these REI gloves on her right over the top of her gloves. Worked, saved her. Had a long ways to go and now her hands were good.
I was looking for waterproof and very warm gloves and I think I have found them. The XL fit my hands perfectly, they come with a pair of liners and these fit easily as well. So far the gloves have been extremwly comfortable and my fingers remain warm with temps being 20 degrees w/ windchill to about 5 degrees. Used for snowblowing and kept me warm. Co-op pricing makes them even more appealing. Two cinch points at wrist and end of glove reduce snow and wind ingress into gloves. Definitely a good value especially if a member and on sale.
These gloves are great. Very warm. What especially stands out is that each glove is actually two gloves: the outer glove shields you from the elements outside. The inner glove is great for when you jump in the car and need the tactility and screen input needed in today's cars.
I just got these gloves yesterday and used this morning to break off chunks of ice off my car so I can run errands'. It is 9 degrees outside, and my hands were cold from the beginning. I was expecting better performance from the reviews. I wear man's XXL so gloves are slim pickins for me. My timing is off since it is late in the season. I am sending these back and using my current gloves which I didn't want to use for shoveling snow and cleaning off my car because they are kind of dressy. I had another pair of gloves that the performance was awful, so I threw them out and wanted to replace them with these gloves. The gloves with the best reviews in my size are sold out except for these. I don't need gloves to use my laptop or phone, so a lot of REI inventory is not for me. I was looking at the usual suspect sites as well and I am done looking for this year.
This is my second pair of the exact same gloves. I love the fit, and they're very warm. Only complaint is that my first pair only lasted 2 ski seasons. (3-4 trips each year)
Very well fitted. Well made but the rest of time is when it's very cold outside.
