No break-in period! Awesome out of the box!!

After my first hike with these, I fully expected to have mega blisters because of the rainy bike ride to the trailhead that saturated my socks through the top ankle portion of the boot via rain running down my leg. Also, I hadn't had the chance to wear them other than just trying them on for a fit check!!
However, I had no blisters or even hotspots after 9 miles and 2,000 feet of elevation!!! These have a running shoe feel with hiking boot support. I'm very pleased! They are light and supportive!

Comfortable but for a design flaw that rubs ankles

I wish I'd read the reviews before I raced out and bought these. I have the Altra Timp 5 trailrunners and LOVE them! But I needed something waterproof and more like a hiking boot for snow hiking especially for using with snowshoes. They fit exactly like the trail runners - SO comfortable out of the box - but with one BIG flaw: there's a really stiff, pokey seam over the ankle bones. Despite adding a little moleskin over the seam before I went to test-hike them on an easy 4-mile trail, and skipping the lacing loop that was directly over my ankle bones, the boots rubbed my inside ankle bones raw on both feet. I also found a small chunk of the foam sole missing on the right boot, and I was an easy, forest trail with few rocks. I don't think these will hold up with snowshoes or even microspikes, and there's no way I would be able to wear them for another hike without using a serious amount of padding over my ankle bones. I hope they might soften with time, but I know see that another reviewer tried that to no avail. So, back to REI they'll go :( :( :(

Super Comfortable and wide toe box relief

Widest toe box I could find for a bunion. Had no pain at all hiking in national parks for 4 days. I did not feel like they needed a breaking in period but maybe all shoes do a little bit. I was already used to a zero drop.

Blister maker not waterproof
I love the open toe box of Altra. I love that they feel comfortable right out of the box. What I don’t love it feeling hot spots on my heels and outside of my big toe joint just 2 miles into a mild hike. When I first started wearing them they were ok feeling. I was prepping for a 30 mile backpacking trip and was able to hike 5-7 miles in these boots well enough that I thought they would be good for the trip. I was SO wrong. Only 4 miles into my 3 day adventure and my heels had blistered AND ripped open. I was able to tape up my heels and pressed on. After arriving at my first campsite, 12 miles in, my feet were tore apart. I had blisters on the big toe joints, blisters on the outside edge of my foot and my heels were raw. The second day brought me through some grasses that were still wet from the morning dew. After a 1/2 mile of walking in the wet grass, my feet were also wet. I was not a happy camper. I’m glad I had “camp shoes” because I ended up just hiking in them on the last day. They were like a water sock and way more comfortable than these boots.
I’ve tried multiple times to like these boots, but if I don’t tape my heels before a hike I will have blisters in only 2 miles. I’ve reapplied waterproofing, but they just aren’t waterproof.

Rubs on the ankle bones
The foot bed is comfortable. The ankle area has a design flaw and rubs the ankle bone. I tripped one time over rocks and after the hike there was a chunk of rubber missing on the inner right egde near the heal. I could not lace up the ankles due to the rubbing on the ankle bones so I laced them low like shoes and was able to finish a one hour hike. Smooth trails but hilly. My other two pair of Altra hiking shoes have been absolutely amazing! I am so disappointed with the boot. I will return and look for the hiking shoes. I have NEVER returned shoes to REI in my life and I am not young. This is a first.

So Comfortable; My New Favorite Hiking Boots
1 year ago
Love these! They were comfy right out of the box and no break-in time was needed. They're just what I wanted in a mid-height, waterproof hiking boot -- lightweight; a nice, wide toe box; grippy, flexible Vibram sole; and zero drop.
After reading reviews of the previous or last year's model of the Timp hiker, I was initially concerned whether I would get rubbing or blisters on one or both ankles, since that seemed to be a deal-breaker for some reviewers. I had no problem whatsoever.
I have found no negatives or anything I wish were different about these boots. Sizing was true; no size adjustment or insoles needed to improve the fit. I definitely recommend the Timp 5 boots and would buy again!

Needs a small tweak
I recently purchased these boots and used them on a trip. I love the weight, breathability, sole, and waterproofing. My only issue with them is that there is an overlapping seam on the gussets on each side of the tongue that has a very thick seam - this creates a hard point and rubbed my ankles so raw that I had to apply bandages to continue hiking. I performed "surgery" and cut this hard seam out on both sides. This fixed the problem! As a wide foot owner these are otherwise great boots if you're willing to make adjustments.

Great boot!

I love these! I would have given them 5 stars but I do experience some slight discomfort on the inside of the left shoe ankle. It’s strange because the right on seems to be constructed a little better in that area and does not have a rigid piece that hits you right in the ankle bone. I can work with this, I just don’t tie them real tight. Everything else is superb about them.

Rubs the Ankle Bone Terribly
I bought these for a backpacking trip and was testing them out inside. The inner ankle where the tongue is connected is hard and rubs the ankle bone. I tried different ways to tie them to put less pressure on the ankle and it did not help the pain. I even tried a thicker sock and no luck. I am really disappointed because they are super comfortable if not for the horrible ankle bone rubbing.
