Great Bike Rack
I picked this up at the local REI this week. The previous reviews seemed a mixed bag so I thought I would add mine. This is a great rack. Now I prefer the old style roof mount that clamps onto the down tube but those don't seem to be made anymore. At least the ones I liked. Also I do not like the hitch mount racks because they block your view, block your brake lights, block your license plates, and are a menace in parking lots. This mounted up on my existing roof rails so easily I barely needed instructions. It clamps down tightly and securely. After mounting I put a bike in and snugged it in. Very easy, seems very secure. So long as you are tall enough to lift your bike up onto the roof this is a great rack.
Simple, secure.
I'm a previous owner of the prior generations of Yakima bike racks, which really hadn't changed much from the 90's to 2009 when I bought my last one. The rear wheel straps in on both the old and the new models, but the old style had a quick release fork mount. I now have a couple of bikes with through axles, so a fork mounted type rack is a bit more of a hassle. I've seen racks that clamp on to the downtube of the bike frame, but that's not something I want to do on a carbon frame. I had some doubts about this type of rack in which the front wheel is held in by two loops, but they seem very poplular and the online videos and reviews seemed to indicate it was a solid choice. Indeed, it's pretty easy to wheel the bike into the rack then raise the bar behind the front wheel, then tighten it with the knob. It's all very secure. Before using it, you may want to watch a couple of videos on YouTube for how to install it and how to properly load a bike. For some bikes, you may need to raise the rear facing bar a bit before rolling the front wheel in place, otherwise the bar will hit the bottom bracket or downtube before you can raise it all the way. Installation is quick and easy, which means that taking it off is equally easy. That's something I did for a recent road trip when I didn't want the extra wind resistance. One nitpicking point (hence the 4-star rating) is the fact that when the bars are lowered and you are travelling without a bike in place, the larger of the two bars is free to just bounce up and down. Seems like Yakima could have provided a clip or a strap to keep it from doing that. I solved the problem with a short velcro strap that I had lying around in the garage, similar to the straps made for lashing a pair of skis together for easier carrying. I purchased the locks separately; you will need two if you want to lock it to your top bars and a third if you want to be able to use the cable lock that comes included inside the unit for securing your bike to the rack. that cable lock isn't going to stop a determined thief with the right tools, but it will provide sufficient security if you're just running into a store or restaurant want some basic security to making sure someone can't just pull your bike off quickly.
Both of mine broke in exactly the same way
I have two, and both eventually broke in exactly the same way. The tightening knob had something snap inside that now rattles around. The knob freely spins off the screw and seems to now be cross-threaded. The rack still works, but I have no confidence in it not loosening itself. IF YOU ARE READING THIS: JUST BUY A HITCH RACK LIKE 1UP. Seriously. I get it—hitches are pricey, your car may be hard to find a hitch for, but suck it up and do it. Don’t waste money on a rooftop rack like I did. They are a pain to load and they break.
Great design easy to use.
I order the Yakima HighRoad and the Thule UpRide and the Yakima was way more easy to use and simple to install.
can’t go wrong
Fastened very easily to my Yakima base rack with aero bars. It’s been on for a few weeks with intermittent trips and it still feels solid. I’ve used it for 1 hour drives with my salsa journeyer on it and it felt solid when I arrived. I can’t say how well it fastens to other brands of base racks but I can’t imagine it being a problem as long as the bars aren’t massive. The rack comes with a bike lock cable that retracts into the rack which is convenient. You have to purchase the locks to use it though. With the locks, the cable works well. Good peace of mind for when you stop at a rest stop etc. Definitely on the high end for a roof top rack for a single bike so maybe wait for a sale but ultimately you can’t go wrong with this rack.
Great bike rack
Bought this bike rack because I’m eventually going to tow a trailer with me when I go out, so a hitch rack is a no-go for me. I have Yakima SkyLine rack system on top of my Diamondback bed cover and this bike rack on top. Looks great, works great and holds my bike steady. Fits my large Cannondale Habit 29er no problem. If your bike is heavier or you have a tall truck or SUV, I would recommend a hitch mount though as it’s exactly easy to lift your bike super high. I just stand on top of my bed cover to make it easy. Overall I love it!
Easy to use and very stable
This Yakima roof rack is very easy to use and extremely stable. Haven’t noticed the slightest wobble. The two points of contact with the bike’s front wheel plus the strap on the back wheel make for a reassuring and sturdy design. In my experience, the most secure roof rack available.
Nice rack!
Easy to use, versatile rack, all around great function, a little noisy on the highway
