I posted a review on chromes website but thought I’d warn here as well. An rei worker recommend this bag to me and at first it was great. The bag is good looking but the holding mechanism is horrible. The top two supports are Velcro so if the bottom tiny clip isn’t pushed down, it comes undone and the Velcro just falls apart and the bag falls off your bike. You can barely put weight in this bag. It fell off twice on one ride and I ended up wearing it like a messenger bag for the rest of my ride home and when I got home the bottom strap was gone so now I have a useless bag until I figure out a new strap.
It’s a really well made bag of course But the way the suppose to be attach at the bike it’s bad not sure if I will keep it it my need to be return it I will try it’s so difficult to make it work either the straps needs to be longer or a different bracket and also the strap at the bottom it’s so bad it will be much better if it’s a clip that snaps so it’s easier not sure who designed this maybe some one who doesn’t ride a bike it’s all about making easy to mount the bag at the bike .....
I really like this pannier. The design with pockets and features are some of the best I've had. The pockets, pouches, sleeves are well done and thought out and I have secure places all of my gear (tools, lock, cable, patch kit, lights, etc, and even laptop storage, up against the supported interior/wheel side). I also enjoy the shoulder strap. What makes this not a perfect 5 star? The hook and loop system works but it is not easy to quickly attach or detach from my rack, which is a standard rack. It is not the Ortlieb quick-lock system. It is secure and appears to be flexible for different racks or tubes. It is just not easy to get the straps around the rack and secured.
I have about 10 chrome industries bags/big bags, along with a bunch of shirts and shorts. I've loved everything chrome has offered. The bottom strap of this pannier is so bad that it makes it veryyyy difficult to keep steady on the bottom, which might make it move around a bit depending on your rack. Within 20 minutes, my bag had kept moving, and had a small slit in the back side of it from moving while riding. I contacted chrome, and they said it was user error and wouldn't do anything about it. Pretty dissatisfied considering that I've had nothing but amazing experiences with other chrome bags.
These work on my evo bike rack. They look nice, too. They aren’t good for grocery runs - not very quick and easy to remove but too nice to leave behind. I haven’t gone camping yet but the combine 30L on the back should do well. One of these alone would be a nice commute with a laptop solution.
I've had a Chrome shoulder bag most of my life and love it. After a lot of research, I bought two Pannier bags from Chrome - a purchase I now regret. The strap system to attach the bag's lower part to the rack is completely useless. I have three different styles of bike racks, and they don't work for a single one. The only way to keep the bags held back from sliding forward, hitting my feet, and breaking discs is to use ski straps and duct tape. If I knew I was going to be using ski straps and duct tape I would have continued with the home-made system I was trying to upgrade from.
This thing is seriously so exhausting trying to get onto the rack of my bike. It barely stays on and takes forever to attach/detach
They are more robust than the urban ex 2, about the same internal size, maybe slightly bigger. Water resistant not waterproof. The laptop sleeve takes up alot of the thicknessThere's a nice pocket on side for a water bottle. If you leave the shoilder strap attached you gotta stuff it inside before closing it up.The mounting system is insanely cumbersome. Hook and loop straps that aren't easy to put on and off. Not as easy as the other older chrome panniers or the ortlieb panniers. I don't know why chrome went with this mounting system. Probably cause it was way cheaper to manufacture. It would be a good pannier for work, could hold a laptop, some cables and folders and maybe a light jacket. Prob no room for your lunch bag. Ideally it would be used on a bike you wouldn't need to lock up often because it's a pain to take off and put back on.
The bag looks cool, and definitely has plenty of room for storage. Unfortantely...the design is poor. The bottom bracket strap that is supposed to secure the bag tight against the pannier rack is just not up to task. It comes loose often, which makes the bag move around. My bag had a small slit in it after 30 minutes. I am so careful with my bags too, and this happened after the bottom strap failed.
I had 2 urban ex panniers for about 8 years that the welding finally failed on and used the credit from those to get this. All the other reviewers have already called out how wonky the straps are so I'm pulling those out right away and replacing them with vinyl coated S hooks and a voile strap, but the design flaw that no one has mentioned is this bag is made with the waterproof tarp lining but has an open top covered by a flap. It's not a "roll top" like it says in the description. Why would you do that? There's always a chance that water's going to get in onto your stuff. There's no way I'd trust this in any sort of precipitation. Also worth noting that when I went to remove the shoulder strap after I received the bag the clip broke. So that's immediately useless. Have had a lot of Chrome stuff over the years that I've loved, but this one's a serious fail from the design to the materials.
