Wouldn't recommend
the promised update- if you are trying to remove your first draw or put a rope back on the draw after pulling it this stick doesn't work super well. it is prone to collapsing or just not being sturdy enough to do what is needed compared to other forms of stick clips. Do I love it? no. Do I hate it? also no. Would I return it or buy it again? still no. In the end I'm keeping it because it is really compact, can be carried up sport routes on your harness in a variety of ways, and gets the job done. Because of the cost I generally wouldn't recommend this to anyone though.
Initial impressions
This is a limited review that I’ll update in a few weeks, but my initial impression is mixed and I feel like I might end up returning this product after I test it outside. I got it because of the recent discount etc, because who wants to pay full price on this, and because it seemed like a good tool to travel with (or carry up a route on a harness) because of the compactness. It has a nice reach and out of the bag it does look nice, but while practicing on bolts I have set up indoors I’ve noticed a few issues. The shaft of the clip stick has a tendency to twist if you’re trying to retrieve a quickdraw off of a bolt which can make doing so difficult, and the super clip attachment can be difficult to unclip from a quick draw when placing your draw. The stiffness of the super clip may normally be a pro, but when the head of this thing is attached to the body by a small rivet I’m unsure of how long the whole device would last. Having used the Trango stick clip, and liked it, I’ll report back on how this holds up to some outdoor climbing soon.
Good for travel, but the pole is flimsy
It is definitely flimsier than other common stick clips. It has a good reach though, and I have used it to clip second bolts almost 20 ft up, though it took a few minutes of struggling to get it done. I suspect if I wanted to retrieve a draw the pole would be too flimsy. The reason to buy it is because it is very compact and will fit in a carry-on. If you don't intend to do that, I would probably just buy the superclip and a painter's pole. Or you could buy this and a painter's pole, and only use the roll up pole when traveling (which is what I do)
I wish it was better
Honestly I was really excited for this new toy. But on my first trip out while figuring out how to use my new stick clip the pole folded in on itself, it was loaded with a draw and my 9.5 rope and I reached up to place my draw higher bolt using most of the pole, normal work load if I may say. It caused a visible crease in the laminate and now, 10-12 uses that crease seems to be getting worse, more visible and more pronounced, so much so that it’s not become a weak point and the poles rigidity is compromised. After the first folding in on itself it has happen two (total of 3) other times always in the same place, right in the middle. I have only used this pole 12-15 times in the month I have owned it and it’s already showing wear that is compromising its usefulness. I’m not hard on equipment but this pole is fragile and takes more finesse to use. Honestly if it wasn’t so gosh darn compact I would write this stick clip off. I’m hoping to get mine warrantied (fingers crossed) My advice is that you need to be VERY careful putting any side load on this stick clip, limit how you go about traversing clips and Treat this stick clip as if it is made of glass.
