I primarily use these for long days on more technical trails and they are perfect for just that. I have not issues with the tongue being being too short or the heel slipping, as others do. I also have had no quality issues. In my opinion, these are not a fast shoe, which is why I wear them on 2+ hour trail runs. My pacing is usually ~9 min/mile on technical trail with these shoes. The only reason I gave 4/5 stars is because the sizing is off. They run very narrow so get the wide or size up.
Within the first 20 miles of road use the left shoe had delamination occuring on the entire toebox fabric. I also think they are very far too firm to be labeled as "maximum" cushioning. After being dissatisfied with them I went and bought a pair of Hoka speedgoat 5 shoes on sale and what a difference! Not stiff and well cusioned and after 100+ miles of hiking and runing they are still flawless. Even did 29 miles of hiking in one day hiking rim ro rim of the grand canyon. No comparison between the SG 5's and SG 6's.
The Vibram sole delaminated from the foam sole after only 35 miles of walking/running
Cheap material or rush to making it. All ready pealing off. 30miles on it
I wore 5 pairs of these during my AT thru hike. Mostly they lasted about 550-650 miles, however one pair failed in less than 100 miles. I mean big failures ripping open from little toe to heel on both shoes. Being on trail, I replaced my shoes and later contacted Hoka CS, which was absolutely helpless, stubborn almost, so with poor customer support like this I refuse to spend my money any more on the brand.
In my opinion the fit and comfort of the SG6 was a huge improvement. The SG5 did not work for me. However, the sole of this shoe has worn out in just 2 months. I have a pair of SG3s I wore for the last two summers that are still perfectly intact however they are too small for me now. I was very pleased with the improvements, the shoe just didn’t hold up. I also still wish they would put a real tongue back on the shoe like the SG3. Running down steep NE mountains with laces digging into your foot isn’t very fun.
I ran through 3 pairs of the SP5 over 1000mi of technical NorthEast trails. Like most, I loved the stability and comfort. Got the SP6 three weeks before an Ultra. First couple 10milers at home on rocks and roots: really enjoyed the extra stiffness of the sole which reminds me of the Tecton 2. Does a better job than the 5 to keep your feet from being hammered on rocks while still keeping the same overall comfort. Then out on rainy day over 60k/8000ft of technical mountain trails in British Columbia. Shoes were great. No foot fatigue, no blisters, perfectly stability. Overall, SP6 is better than SP5. Lighter, more responsive, more underfoot protection, same comfort and stability as the 5.
Very disappointed in the quality of the Speedgoat. The uppers are developing tears. Purchased about 12 months ago . I wear them sparingly usually for 2-4 mile hikes on easy trails.
I backpack, trail run and have a bad foot that surgery only partially fixed. Slippery conditions took me off the Long Trail in Vermont until I discovered the Vibram Megagrip sole. Traction with these is second to none and that is why I tried a pair of Speedgoat 3s years ago. The cushioning was great; the first shoes I’d had in seemingly forever that kept my bad foot comfortable. My daily shoe has been exclusively Speedgoats since, happily going through multiple pairs of 3s, 4s and 5s. I’m not a fan of most of the color combinations, but traction and comfort have been more important. Since I can’t find any Speedgoat 5s in my size anymore, I bought a pair of the Speedgoat 6. What a disappointment! The shoe is stiff, cushioning is way down and the comfort is gone. Why would they change the shoe that much? There are plenty of stiff, uncomfortable trail shoes out there. The market doesn’t need another one. I’m returning mine and once again going on the search for a shoe I can live with. I only hope the Speedgoat 7 will revert back to the design that made it the best trail runner out there. And while you’re fixing the next version, is it too much to ask to offer an option of just black, white or gray? (The black/stardust version looks plain black on the webpage, but includes plenty of purple.)
Comfortable with thick sole and airy top. Hides dirt pretty good. Have not used on the trail yet, but walking around in yard and rocks driveway. The feet and knees feel good.
