This is my new go-to shell for everything from ski tours to neighbourhood dog walks. Newest addition to the Beta family is extremely lightweight as the name implies, yet windproof, breathable and water resistant. A high quality jacket that costs a pretty penny but built to last for years. PROS: -as a new jacket, it's completely water resistant, beading off raindrops in light to moderate downpours. As per Arc'teryx customer support, this model will lose its DWR coating quicker than the Beta LT, so will just require more frequent re-waterproofing. -lightweight & packable: slightly lighter than the Beta LT, and every ounce counts for hikers and climbers. -worn on a recent ski tour in varying weather conditions; it was comfortable both when it warmed up on the uphill travel (pit zips are key) and when the wind picked up at elevation. CONS: -due to its PVC-free material, it has a rigid, almost tarp-like feel compared to other shell jackets (minus 1/2 star). It felt strange to put on for the first time, but after a few wears I don't notice anymore, and it moves/flexes well when I'm active. -because it's so lightweight, it feels less durable than other shell jackets I've worn due to the thin material; could be more susceptible to tears & rips (from ice axes, crampons, etc) (minus 1/2 star) NOTES: -I'm a XS in most women's shell jackets (5'4, 115 lbs), and the S in this jacket fit pretty loose, especially in the arms. If you're between sizes, would recommend sizing down. -I've seen some other reviews of Beta jackets comment on the hoods being too large - this is to accommodate a helmet. If worn on its own, the elastic cinch helps tailor the fit - otherwise the hood will flop into your face (see last photo). -would be nice if there was one chest pocket, but the two hand pockets are high enough that they're easy to access when wearing a backpack hip belt. -loaded with great features like velcro to tighten around wrists/cuffs, RECCO sensor for S&R, and eco-friendly/sustainable production
Loved it while getting soaked in the rain on a hike. Also loved it while blocking wind on a sunny day walk! What I liked: Adjustable sleeves/wrists (wore in the sun where I wanted to leave them loose for air and then wore in rain where I wanted to tighten up to keep cold draft out) Simple design (for a shell, it has exactly what you need and no more. Sometimes other brands try to make jackets too complicated and makes the aesthetic style not as great. This one has what you need but in a simple, easy to wear on trail and walking on the street) What I loved: Adjustable/cinch waist (I love nothing more than being able to cinch in a waist line. Not only crucial for when it’s actively raining or windy but also helpful for fit. I’m someone with hips…and normally these shells are too tight low on my hips. Instead I can cinch them up to my waist and the fit is 10x better) Flat/seamless zippers (not only aesthetically better but makes the flat in body feel better. Works wonders when layering under a larger coat!) What kept me from giving a 5/5: Overall fit (though the cinch in did help a lot, overall it felt so smug around my hips. As an athletic though ticker hipped woman, I found it a bit frustrating to be so tight there while loose elsewhere.)
I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I'm 5'5, 125 lbs and got a Small size. I tried this out on a hike on an early spring day in Vermont. It fit just right with room to wear a bulky sweater underneath. I really like the hood and the sinches were easy to adjust. The positioning of the pockets were ideal and I like the inner pocket for a cell phone or glasses. The armpit zips were an added bonus when I needed to vent. The only reason I didn't give this product 5 stars was the material used. I appreciate that the Gore-Tex jacket is waterproof but the material is a bit loud. The crinkle noise when I moved made it hard to hear my surroundings and hiking mate. Otherwise, a great product!
Beautiful jacket that I received free to review, excellent waterproofing, and looks good on a petite body. Unfortunately, the sizing is a bit off compared to other major brands that REI sells. It was a bit tight for me, so my daughter that is slimmer in the top modeled it for me. She loved the feminine fit, waterproofing held up in a deluge at the park, she liked the deep pockets, waist cinch cords and Velcro in the wrists. That being said, the sleeves are a bit long for both of us at 5'1, it is a bit noisy when you walk, and the hood is not flattering at all. Even when you cinch it up, it is just very awkward looking. We both would recommend the jacket for the waterproofing, fact that it is lightweight, very packable, built I would have sized up if I knew that this brand ran small. My recommendation is to change the hood, unless you are a snow boarder, skier, or rock climber, the hood is a bit strange.
I received this coat the day before I was heading out on a long vacation to Australia and New Zealand, so I swapped out the other rain jacket I had packed for this one, and I'm so glad I did. In both countries I faced frequent rain and wind on my hikes and took multiple boat ferries. In all situations, this coat kept me dry and warm. I did not feel any wetness under my coat, and zipped up, it really kept the wind out. The hood is superior to other jackets I've owned in the way it cinched around my face but also had a lipped hood like a ball cap that kept the rain from hitting my face. I also liked the zippers under the arms to allow for airflow, this kept me from getting too warm. And, the fact that this was super lightweight and packable for my trip was a huge bonus. This is now my go to jacket and I wore it everyday of my trip. For size reference, I'm 5'4" 150 pounds and typically wear medium clothes. I got this in a medium and it was an exact fit. I could have sized up one to allow more room for an extra shirt underneath.
This is a great, lightweight rain jacket. I sized up to be able to layer over a soft shell or insulating layer. While I haven’t had an opportunity to wear this during a field outing due to weather, I’ve worn it on several occasions on regular work days in both rain and snow. The jacket is lightweight but feels very durable. The seams are well-sealed so I stay warm even without substantial insulating layers. The hood adjusters are a little hard to find while wearing compared to other jackets I’ve had, making the hood fall down and obstruct vision at time, but I’ve been able to make the appropriate adjustments. Overall this is a great rain jacket for any outdoor use.
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. The Arc'terx lightweight is a solid jacket. I just spent a week in the Pacific Northwest and then came home and wore it in a thunder snow storm, and it did a beautiful job of keeping me dry. What I loved is that is has good length, an interior zipper pocket, and pit zips. Most importantly, water absolutely beads off it due to the Gore-Tex. What I didn't love as much is that the hood has a bit too much structure, so it ended up being stiffer than I'd like. I also wish it had at least one more pocket, whether interior or exterior--you can't have too many when you're active outside!
I have nothing but great things to say about this Arc'teryx jacket. It's lightweight, comfortable, breathable and very versatile. From outdoor adventures, hikes and travel to everyday wear around town and walking my dog around the neighborhood - it's perfect for all rainy conditions. No matter what it's paired with - it also looks great on body (beautiful design). This is BY FAR my favorite and highest quality rain jacket to date and I'd highly recommend it!
As the temperatures fluctuate, this jacket has been ideal for sunny days on the slopes, providing the necessary wind protection without causing overheating. Additionally, the fact that these models are now PFC-free is a significant advantage, contributing to a gentler environmental impact.
Bought for my daughter for frequent travel overseas. I have the same jacket a few years old that I LOVE. Light weight, breathable. ALWAYS keeps me dry, even cycling in rain. Hood is very handy if you don’t have an umbrella with you. Easy to roll up and pack in a small space. So much better than all the other rain jackets I have owned.
