I am not sure why another review states that this newer version of KUHL's Renegade Rock Pant runs "baggier" than the previous version. It actually runs SMALLER—as soon as I tried the new version on I could feel the difference in the seat and legs. I attached a few photos showing that I verified this with measurements. As you can see, the thigh circumference is 2" narrower in the new version and the new version's leg opening is also 1/2" narrower. I also compared multiple pairs of each style and the measurements were reasonably consistent. The older version's style number is 5603 and the newer version's is 5359. As in the previous version, the new version's inseam runs about 1/2" shorter than tagged and apparently this is intentionally done by KUHL's design team. I actually prefer the slightly looser fit of the previous version myself hence the 3-star rating.

My favorite pair of pants, clearly... I own 6 pairs. From climbing in the gym to all day multi pitch in the Sierra. Love the pocket below my leg loops of my harness for my phone and zyn
I've owned a lot of hiking/travel pants over the years, and these are by far the best. In fact, I just bought my third pair. They fit well, stretch for ease of movement, don't absorb water, and aren't too heavy for warm climates. I love the fact that there are 3 zippered pockets for security and convenient storage. I also like that the openings for the thigh pockets are fairly inconspicuous and the that overall style doesn't scream "hiking pants" like some do. I have only two small gripes. One is that, like all pants made of similar material, they rustle a bit. the other is that they should have put zippers on both back pockets, not just one.
Excellent for multiple wears on extended trips.
I have many pairs Kuhl Renegade Rock pants. I love them and wear them almost every day. BUT they recently discontinued the old version and 'updated' these - and largely ruined them. They use to fit fairly slim, now they are baggy. And they just fit weird - like the waist is oddly high now. I don't understand what they were going for here. I also don't know why brands mess with hugely popular products. You don't need to change just for the sake of change. If a product is popular and loved, let it continue to be popular and loved. In any case, I am returning the multiple pairs I bought and will need to find a new default pair of pants to wear :(. Side note: I also just tried the shorts version, and they have the same problem.
I've seen this brand at REI and could never justify the price. Sometimes the fit for certain styles was also a turn off. But alas I came across the Renegade Rock Pants, tapered. I work outside during the Spring-Fall. They're light and very comfortable. There's a cinch at the ankle to adjust the degree of taper. I haven't had them long enough to vouch for durability, but they feel stronger and I feel will last longer than the pants I was using daily and replacing (prana). Additional pockets is always a plus. I picked up the dark green pair on a whim and fell in love with the color. Will be great for the Fall! If these hold up well over the last few months of the season and into next, I'll probably fill my closet with more options and will hopefully become the last pairs I buy.
Even on a bad day these pants really shine. Late winter and spring conditions in Denali Park, Alaska can be contemptuous. But these pants are versatile enough to handle cool weather, wind, snow, and sunny days. The fit is very comfortable and I love the variety and placement of pockets. The tapered fit makes them ideal for exploring in the mountains. And I appreciate the adjustable ankle drawcord. I'm so glad I added them to my arsenal of outdoor gear. I can't wait to get them out in the mountains this summer.
I've been wearing the Kuhl Renegade Rock Pants for years, and have always loved the fit, material, durability, and finish, but have also always had a problem with the snap closure at the waist. No matter how well the pants fit, the snaps have a habit of popping open under stress, which is not ideal on the trail, or in town for that matter. That hasn't stopped me from owning four pairs, but it bugged me nonetheless. Maybe I am late to the game, but when I was in REI yesterday I saw that Kuhl has heard our comments about the snaps, and replaced them with a riveted button! Now my favorite pants have gone from almost perfect, to absolutely perfect, and now I have five pairs! Thanks Kuhl for listening to customer feedback and fixing the one issue that bugged me about these otherwise awesome pants!
I purchased these pants because I loved the first pair that I bought, and I have made several other purchases from Kuhl. However, this pair had an enormous hole in the front right pocket that I did not realize was there until I wore them for the first time. I will have it repaired on my own, but I thought that I would warn people to check before purchasing. For the price, I thought that this would not happen. Thanks.
