Great product, but packaging burst in shipping
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. My mountainFLOW eco-wax bike maintenance kit arrived during below freezing temperatures and as a result, most of the products froze and burst. While I appreciate the eco packaging from an environmental perspective, it did not hold up to the shipping conditions. Overall the remaining items seemed high quality, and worked effectively. I really wish that I would have gotten more than the limited use from the remaining liquid that stayed in the bottle, as I was only able to make it through one bike. That said, the products worked well. As long as you don't live in a cold environment or do not have this shipped when below freezing, I'd recommend checking it out.
Really High Quality Kit and Almost Too Nice
I usually outsource most of my bike maintenance and cleaning my bikes after a trail ride has been low frills. With this kit though, I felt like a much more responsible sophisticated bike owner. Pros - Materials and Appearance - it looks like a gift box and could very well serve as one. It is thoughtfully designed and very aesthetic while ecological. Function - the bikes started off muddy, chain a little crunchy, and after going through each item in the kit ended up polished, shiny, and in great shape. Rags - they are too nice and my wife wants to steel them Brushes - they are also too nice and I felt bad getting them dirty with mud but if you care for your bikes, these brushes are as nice as you can get. Cons - All Very Minor Bottle nozzles - the plastic spray nozzles are a little flimsy and don’t quite have the same spraying/foaming power as other bottles. Plant Based Bike Grease - does not come with instructions Anything specific for rust treatment or prevention? The kit does not mention rust but the chain oil must help.
Compact kit with all essentials.
This was all pretty new to me. I am an e-bike and bicycle commuter. I also like riding bikes with my family. So my bicycle was pretty dirty and my som really wanted to try out the kit too. The box was originally broken on some parts when it came to it house. I glued the pieces back and haven’t had any issues. What I liked. The small brush was great for getting into some tight spaces where dirt had collected. I liked the cleaning solution for the frame and drivetrain and my son and I used that with good results. We used the lube on the chain and it was all good. I love the environmental friendly supplies and that it’s plant based, loved that! I used everything hit the grease. So I can’t speak to that. I honestly wasn’t sure where to use it and I’ll research that more. I also used the supplies on it e-bike. So we cleaned 3 bikes with good results. I loved all the microfiber towels that came with the kit. I like that everything fit in the kit box and I’ve continued to use that for keeping all the cleaning gear in one place. The cleaning solution got all the mud and dirt off all our bikes. What I don’t like. As someone that’s kind of new to cleaning a bike at this level I would have liked to have an instruction booklet or a link to a more in depth video showing me the best ways to use the gear. I watched the video with the QR code that came with the kit which just explained what came in the pack. I also didn’t use the bigger brush very much as I used the towels more on the frame. I didn’t realize I had to get a water spray bottle too so once my son and I sat down to start going through it, we had to get up and find water. I thought the wax spray and cleaner spray were too much and would have just liked the simplicity of one cleaning solution.
Aesthetically pleasing at expense of some utility
I received the mountainFLOW eco-wax Bike Maintenance Kit in exchange for a review. It's a great looking kit with some nice contents. It was disappointing to receive it with most of the bike wash having leaked out during shipping. The spray bottles were opaque so I couldn't tell how much fluid I had left. The foaming feature on the wash spray bottle was also a little weak. On the upside, the products did a great job in cleaning my bike. The wash was effective in removing dirt and grime and didn't leave any residue. The brushes did their job and the three different towels were labeled for their different uses. The polish was a nice finishing touch. By the time I was done detailing my bike it was the cleanest and quietest it has been in a long time. I gave it 4 stars because it tries too hard to be attractive at the expense of being more functional, specifically the spray bottles and the lid and straps. Pros: Large box to hold everything in the kit and more, and a handle strap for carrying that allows you to stack the box. Frame brush was nice and soft. Drive chain brush was nice and stiff. 3 labeled cloths each with a different purpose. The foam spray did a good job of cleaning the bike without leaving residue and it easily took care of some grease I had on my frame. Cons: Detergent bottle leaked during shipment and more than half was gone upon delivery. (The sprayer was in the closed position). Can’t see how much liquid is inside bottles. The foam spray bottle sprayed most of the cleaner down instead of straight out of the bottle so I had to raise my aim. Lid not water tight. Lid warped either from delivery or leaky frame detergent. Lid latch is a bit cumbersome. Recommendations/Feedback: Add a third brush for tight spaces. Make the lid out of the same material as the tub. Clear spray bottles so you can see how much fluid is left.
Great set, useful & recycled items, no heavy scent
I recently went on a bike ride after a rainy day and it was the perfect time to clean my bike and see how well the products worked. It is really nice to have everything you need in one box, and the box itself is creative and useful. All the products did a great job - the brushes got rid of the bigger dirt and rocks, the smaller brush made it easier to get into the smaller spaces. Then I wiped off both the new and old dirt with the cleaner and rags, effortlessness. One of my favorite things about these products is that they don't have that heavy chemical smell. After I was done I didn't have a lingering scent in my home, or on my hands. Afterwards I polished off the bike and the description was spot on, you can see the reflection off the frame. I just recently put on a new chain on my bike so was not able to use/test the lube. Most of all I really appreciate the effort of these products being used with recycled or plant based material. Would recommend, take care of your bike so it lasts longer, and continues to look new.
So fresh & Clean
This is a great kit. Includes everything you need to keep your bike looking fresh and clean. The wash+degreaser works really well, breaks down the grease and grime. You can really get deep clean of your drivetrain and frame with the stiff drivetrain & soft frame brush. Grease & lube up and you’re ready to roll. Nice to have it all stored in the bamboo storage bin.
Awesome Bike Cleaning kit
I received this bike cleaning kit to try out and review. My Trek Doman bike chain was pretty dirty as was the entire bike. I invited my bike riding girlfriend over to clean her bike and take pictures for me. The cleaning solution, "plant-based bike wash and degreaser" can be used on all of the components, the frame and seat. It was especially effective in getting the grease off of the cassette, chain, rear and front derailleur, and jockey wheel. The cassette came clean with very little elbow grease. My friend had just had her tubeless tires re-sealed and the mechanic got the tire sealant all over the frame. She used the bike wash to get the gooey stuff off of her frame. One of the two brushes is soft and very useful on the frame, the smaller brush is stiffer and worked great on the grease. The frame was not that shiny after its bath, but after using bike polish, it looked years younger (and shinier). We did not use the plant based grease as these components are above my skill level. The kit comes in a box made of recycled plastic and serves as a great place to store the kit, but also can function as a wet water washing basin. I have a second bike that needs some love and affection, so I will reuse the kit on it soon.
Promising, with minor issues
I have never been particularly good about keeping my bikes clean, so I jumped at the chance to get an all-in-one maintenance kit to try from mountainFLOW. The kit is fairly comprehensive: Cleaner, polish, brushes, lubes, and microfiber cloths. Even the case can be used to soak parts or for other cleaning needs. mountainFLOW uses recycled and sustainable materials everywhere possible, and the lubes are plant-based instead of petroleum. Breaking down the parts, the chain lube and bike polish are both excellent, but I'll need to ride more to determine how long the lube lasts. The cleaning brushes are excellent as well, and are made from recycled plastic and bamboo. I haven't tried the bearing grease yet, but it has a good texture and no odor. The three included bamboo microfiber cloths are labeled for each use -- one for polishing, one for cleaning, etc. Perhaps my only gripe was the bike cleaner itself. My bikes are DIRTY, so I was really hoping to give them a bath. Unfortunately, the mountainFLOW cleaner is packaged in a recycled paper spray bottle and ruptured in transit to my house. I don't think the paper bottle is ready for prime time, but that's easily updated. All in all, I think this is a decent value for someone who needs a ready-to-go kit for cleaning and lubricating their bike fleet.
