This shoe was not durable.

These shoes were not durable; however, I loved running in them. I ran in them for about 75 miles and the upper ripped. I took them back to REI and exchanged them for another pair. Again, I loved the way the shoe fit. I ran in the new pair for about 160 miles and the upper ripped again on both shoes. It is almost like the upper dry rots over time. I made sure to clean the second pair up after every run and they still ripped.

Goofy Looking but Effective Sole

I'm typically very minimalist when it comes to shoe soles for walking and running shoes, and honestly think the oversized, over padded outsole trend is a bit silly, so when I had the opportunity to test these, I initially resisted. But, I figured, why not just try it out? I'm glad I did. While the jumbo outsole on this is a bit much for regular walking and street running, it was actually really good for trail running. Likes: - Outstanding traction. I ran some pretty steep and gnarly trails and not once did I experience traction loss. - Downhill impact dampening. Hiking down a hill is much different than running downhill. The thicker sole helped soak up a lot of that impact. - Nice color. I received the traffic cone orange ones, and while not a color I'd normally go for, it's actually very nice. - Lightweight and breathable - Fast break-in and 8/10 for comfort Dislikes - Hard material below the ankle took a bit of time to break in and was a bit uncomfortable for the first run. - Higher profile compared to more conservative soles takes a bit getting used to and can feel wonky over rough terrain. - Outsole is just goofy looking. - Some arch discomfort due to so much sole being under the midfoot. But, this may be correctable with different insoles. Would I get these again? Yeah. They're what I grab out of my three sets of runners when I hit the trail. Would I run pavement in them? No, and I'll still opt for boots on a hike. All-in-all they're a great trail runner and I'll be getting a lot of use out of them.

Perfect Lightweight Running Shoe

This is my first pair of "rocker" heal running shoes, but they performed well with good traction on multiple jogs around snowy/icy, subzero Denver trails. The shoes are very light weight, but extremely comfortable - I really like that the back heal is soft/flexible so that it doesn't dig into your achilles. I generally don't care what color my running shoes are, but this orange does pop.

Great shoes for trails

I've been using the Terrex Soulstride shoes for a couple weeks now, my first impression is that I like them much more than my old trail running shoes. The Soulstride's have a nice and thick midsole that provide a LOT of cushion. The treads and rubber on the outsole of the shoe provide incredible traction, right up there in line with a lot of hiking boots I have worn. The large sole of these shoes provide a stable platform, it doesn't feel like my ankles are going to twist any easier in these as I stumble over obstacles. The sole is round in shape and as you are moving it helps your feet feel like they are rolling forward easier. Towards the tip of the toe, the sole starts to curve quite a bit, but it provides a flatter area towards your toes. This flat area is great for traversing uphill, it basically makes it feel like you are still on a flat surface to an extent, this flat area also seems to help in the part of your stride when you start lifting your heel and moving onto your toes, it really seems to helps your entire foot move forward. The fit is true to size, I have fairly flat and wide feet and wear an 11.5 in most brands, the 11.5 Soulstride fits great with either running socks or socks that are a bit bulkier and warm. These shoes are also surprisingly light for how large they appear, they only feel slightly heavier than my road focused running shoes. I've found these shoes to be good for running anywhere, hiking, and walking in general. I particularly like these as an alternative to hiking boots. They're a good fit for hiking because they are very supportive, but they also feel bulky. It is something that you can definitely get used to, but using them while driving can take some adjustment and getting used to. I have also found them a bit awkward to walk up and down stairs, the rounded shape of the sole definitely takes some adjustment. I've tried them out at the gym as well, I like to use my active shoes for as many purposes as possible. I think they work for the gym, but they are definitely not ideal. I wouldn't want to wear them for big lifts, but for casual days where I'm not on my feet, they work fine. As far as materials, these shoes feel incredibly high quality. The fabric has a nice amount of stretch and the shoe vents excess heat well. I personally like to see pull tabs on heels to help pull the shoe on, I think it would have been a nice addition for these as well since the opening of the shoe is fairly tight and the tongue is attached to the sides of the shoe so you can only move it so far out of the way to get more entry room. Not a deal breaker by any means, I'll just have to actually untie and retie my shoes (I tend to treat everything as a slip on). Overall, I'd say these shoes should be on your list if you're looking for great trail runners with a lot of support, comfor, and grip, or you're looking for alternatives to boots for hiking or backpacking.

Solid footing on every stride!

Love these shoes! They have incredible grip on slick surfaces and provide excellent cushion on rocks, roots, and pavement. On a recent run, snow had fallen and these shoes provided confident foot placement that I have not felt in other trailing running shoes. The rubber soles do well to form around the contours of rocks and provide support when it is needed most. The end of my runs are on pavement and these shoes exceeded performance expectations in how they cushion each heel strike and provide grip through slush. Laces are well designed to hold firm. Incredibly breathable which will be fantastic this summer, but was a little cold for my sub-freezing runs (easily solved with some warmer socks. I appreciate that Adidas is thinking about how to incorporate recycled material into the design.

Winter Trail Shoe Review for Terrex Soulstride

In the limited time I've had these shoes I've found them to be very good and look forward to many miles on the trails here in Missouri. For me they run true to size. The sole is very thick and has a nice curve The thickness absorbs impact and has a good spring. The curve of the sole reminds me of a competitor that uses the curved sole as a primary selling feature. In the case of these shoes, they seem to promote moving whether walking or running. As to the competition's claims that it provides better exercise, I found no difference in the amount of 'exercise' I got in these versus other (flat sole) shoes. But they are extremely comfortable. The tread is quite aggressive and I was impressed with the grip they provide. Recently we received an unusual amount of snow. For grins I thought I'd give them a try in the snow and was pleasantly surprised at the amount of traction I had. Yeah, I got wet feet, but what a great test. On that note, the uppers are mesh and provide very good ventilation. I'm looking forward to getting them out when it's in the 90's. Overall, I found this to be a good shoe especially for the price.

Great stable maximal runner for mild trails

Overall a great shoe with a couple minor issues that may detract from your experience. Fit wise I found them almost perfect, the toe box is wide without feeling clown-shoe-esque, for my feet the splay is just right. The tounge is good for a non sock style but the gussets are definitely going to allow in debris without a running gaiter. My biggest issue is the hard plastic on the upper of the tounge, it seems out of place and for someone like me with a high arch it’s proving a bit uncomfortable. I don’t have enough miles into these to tell if it’ll soften up or if it will cause issues, something to be aware of for us high arch people! The soles ride is great with good padding without feel unstable, there is a lot of rocker so be prepared for that, you’ll need to work with it rather than against. Grip is decent but I’d trust these more with gravel or dirt trails or runs with some off trail segments then as a full on rough terrain runner, they don’t quite seem to have the grip for truly rocky or rugged terrain. The uppers are comfortable and light and ridiculously breathable. Which I’m sure will be nice in spring and summer but right now in winter they’re too chilly even with wool socks if it’s under 40 degrees or so, keep that in mind if you run in colder temperatures or when it’s wet. All in all I’m pleasantly surprised by these having never used Adidas before, I think they have a place in my shoe quiver.

Solid first impressions!

Took these straight out the box into a 5 miles trail run, no complaints. They are rugged, breathable, and good looking. No hot spots for me. There is a little extra room in the toe box but I was appreciating the space around mile 4. No heel lift to speak of. The continental rubber and multi directional lugs on the tread were very grippy and noticeable on descents. Well worth it at the current price point if you are I treated in trail running.
