Great!
My 14yo son is an avid hiker and backpacker. He needed waterproof pants due to a 60+ mile backpacking trip he will be going on this summer. He has worn these pants on several occasions to try them out now. They fit him well. He likes that he feels comfortable wearing them with shorts, pants or nothing under them depending on the temperature. They keep him dry and happy while hiking in bad weather. The length is adjustable because of the ankle velcro which means his younger brother could adjust them and use them if need be. The material is very nice quality. I highly recommend.
Badly designed pants
We got these for my 13-year-old son. He's 63" tall with a 28” low waist and a 26" inseam. XL was the perfect size to get despite the sizing chart. As designed the elastic waist can work for a 8-year-old and the length for a high school basketball player. The measurements does not match the chart. Out of the bag it’s a size smaller than is shown at 28.5” and it goes even smaller. There is a button band to cinch it to 24” At full size it stretches out to 34” The waist fits him perfectly and gives some growing room. I measured his waist with pants on at 30”, and he can stretch it out to 32”+ to get it over them. Remember, rain pants are over pants. The waist needs to be a size bigger than the length and isn’t. And the length is super long. He has a 26” inseam/32” outseam but these are 41” pants. The chart says it’s for an inseam of 30.25 which would imply they’re 33-35” long which they absolutely are not. I have 9” height on him and my pants are 37” long. It’s a design failure, on rain pants you make a bigger inseam but closer to standard outseam because you need space around the middle of the pants for fabric bulk but not in the overall length. These pants should be pulled from sale and redesigned. That said, he’s happy with them baggy so if your kid likes loose clothing buy to the waist and deal with the length. Can always roll up the cuffs. I can’t photograph how baggy they are that’s how baggy they are, they just look bad. Other features includes velcro to cinch down the cuffs but this will just get dirty. Should have used elastic cord and a cordlock. There’s a zippered side pocket in a bad spot. Every time you walk it will press what’s in the pocket into the side of the leg. Putting standard pockets with zippers would have been better. The construction is strange, there’s a seam around each leg where a zip off would go. Not usually the most comfortable choice.
Quality Kids Rain Pant!
It doesn’t get much better than these for a great pair of kids rain pants! The hook and loop fasteners at the ankle do a great job keeping the bottom in place. This was particularly helpful for keeping my five year old’s feet dry during a recent snowy morning! These were a perfect outer layer during another hike on a cold morning, and kept her base layers dry and warm. The zippered pocket is a nice touch. My daughter likes the style. I really like the reflective strips for added safety. Another great feature is the adjustable waist band. This along with the ankle fasteners mean you can size up with these pants to get a bit more time before the kids outgrow them. The build quality definitely lives up to my high expectations of REI products. Overall, you can’t go wrong with the Rainier Rain Pants!
Great pants for a rainy day
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. While the size I ordered ended up being too large for my daughter who is on the small side, I do think these will be good pants once she grows into them. The elastic waist has an adjustable button, and you can tell the pants are a good option to throw on in the rain. They are of course unlined, so are something I would envision putting on top of an existing pair of pants or shorts. The seams appeared well done and of good quality.
Great rain pants for your kiddos
When my 11 year old nephew tried on these pants he said "These are weird, but I LIKE THEM!" The one thing that some people might not be too keen on is the fact that the pants do not have pockets on the hips, just the one pocket mid-leg. If you are using these as rain pants this makes perfect sense because the hip pockets will potentially fill with water. With the leg pocket being a zip pocket it keeps everything contained and dry. I would say a Medium fits an averaged sized 11 year old just fine. The waist is snug, but not overly tight. The length is great, and there is room for a warmer pair of pants under these as an outer shell. The bottoms of the pants have Velcro as well, which is a great to keep the bottom of the pants tight to boots for hiking in the rain. Overall, these are great pants that are well made and comfortable. I would recommend these for your kiddo if you are looking for some easy to use rain pants for hiking, or outdoor sports in the rain.
Happy Kid
My son wore these outside a few days in some light rain and snow. They were a bit long but the great thing about these pants is they are super adjustable. There are adjustments around the waste and ankles. He said they felt really good and liked how easy they were to run and play. Definitely a keeper.
Upgraded kids rain gear
These pants are an improvement from previous REI kids rain pants. The interior is much less "slick" which my kid liked, more breathable. They also have adjustable waist which is very helpful for kids who come in all shapes and sizes. I also like that the cuffs are pretty wide but can Velcro smaller, allowing kids to put them on/off without having to remove sneakers. Lastly, my kid commented that they were less noisy than their previous pair.
Solid rain pants
These are very effective rain pants which aggressively shed water. The pants are very adjustable as well. They can be cinched at two locations on the inside the waist band and the cuffs have Velcro straps. The cuffs are good to keep water out of shoes but also if the pants are too long they help keep the cuffs where they should be. I got a larger size so my daughter can use them for more than one season. In addition to use in the rain, we will also use these pants for snow on warmer days.
kids rain pants
I usually get the kids rain pants as the XL fits me I wear a 6 in women's. I do not like the adult design of the Rainier pants as that zipper all the way down each leg is annoying and bulky and that velcro always pops open and doesn't stick well after a while. I use them for gardening and I don't feel justified spending a 100. bucks on rain pants I am just going to be working in and trashing through! But, these kids pants last pretty well! Last pair lasted me about 2 years! I put some of that Tenacious Tape repair patches on the knees when I first get them, makes them last a little longer for all the crawling I do at work.
Great pair of pants
Got these for my son. They have held up in rain and playing in the snow(with sweatpants under). They have nice features such as a large zip pocket and adjustable ankle straps allowing for a tight seal around a boot to keep the water out.
