I received these products for free from the REI Tr
The Exped Down Socks were like a welcomed salve to my feet after a chilly morning of backpacking. They are comfy, warm and lightweight! There is a sufficient amount of down that kept my bare feet warm but they might pair better with a dry pair of hiking socks if you’re wearing these by a campfire on a cold night. (Note: they’re not made to walk in but wearing these while sitting in a camp chair is more comfortable than the hiking boots you had on all day.). And let’s not forget about wearing these INSIDE if you live in a colder, winter clime! If you tend to get cold feet inside your sleeping bag, these are definitely for you! The elastic top is comfy around your lower legs but because I’m thin, I had some room to spare. It’s a soft elastic with the seam covered by a non-irritating material. Do not worry about the sock slipping. The integrated heel-lock on the inside of the sock keeps it on your foot. It’s a little extra elastic that keeps the booty from sliding off your foot and is great for keeping chilling drafts out! Exped was thinking when they packaged the socks with a piece of recyclable cardboard and 2 elastic bands. The bands can be repurposed for compact stowage of the socks, whether it’s in your backpack, cabin, camping van or sock drawer. They resisted tap water on full strength (10 sec try) so a little liquid spill should keep you dry. (Don’t try if with hot coffee, however!) I see myself using these socks in my older, upper Midwest (Wisconsin) home in the winter, inside the camping van when temps dip and the floor holds a chill, and always after a day hike or a day of hauling a loaded backpack - when you just want your feet to breathe and be warm. Aahh! The Exped Socks trialed were Size M for my Women’s 9.5 (US) foot size. It was just right but not a lot of length to spare. Exped’s US/EUR/UK sizing chart for Men & Women will help with your sizing needs. I have narrow feet with 66 year old joints and found my pair of socks to fit loose enough for downy warmth. Wider feet might be tight and require a larger size. Enjoy these socks and say hello to comfy warmth and goodbye to cold, purple toes!
Warm, light, and compressible
As someone who always has really cold feet, these down socks kept my feet warm. They come with elastane at the top of the socks, and internally at the top of the ankle which keeps the socks from sliding down your feet and the toasty warm air in. Being filled with down, they are light at just a bit over 4 ounces, and compressible. The only complaints that I had would be that I wish they included a small stuff sack to help compress them smaller when packing them, and that being made of down I did see a few pieces of down pocking through, but that is to be expected. Overall I am very satisfied with these socks.
Sleep warm with these socks...
After putting these socks through some backcountry paces, they are worthy of a place in my cold weather pack. Fit was great in my size M for a men's 8 regular, if your feet are any bigger, i'd go with a large I really like the elastic ankle band and heel-lock to keep them snug on my foot. Weight is light, but not accurately presented on packaging, advertised as 4.1 ounce, mine were 4.5 ounce. Very packable and warm. These are truly a sock, and not designed for walking @, although i did use them on sand at a beach camp with success. They were very slippery on hard surfaces, so definitely meant to be used as a sock.
Hot pockets for your feet
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. The female size 10 fit my feet perfectly. They are super cozy for sleeping in, but without any tread they are reserved for sleeping, or walking/crouching around in a tent. I would say they are best for tent camping or cold rooms. They are not to be worn outside, as there is no tread and they can be slippery if wet or icy outside. But, this lack of tread makes them perfect to sleep in. Having two loose bands is strange, one only needs the single band on the booties to keep them together, but maybe the other bands are used for packing? This isn't needed as the booties compress easily and can be stuffed even into a sleeping back stuff sack - except perhaps the most minimal. The extra unattached bands will just be lost, but they aren't needed. Minimalist campers who want warm feet would like these. Inside the bootie nothing rubs against the feet, no irritating seams! Once one is snuggled in one forgets they are even on. They do warm the feet up quickly.
The best thing I didn't know I needed
First, my feet are cold constantly. Summer, winter, socks, no socks, just always cold. I have layers and layers when I go hiking and have been known to over-pack socks so I'm not cold on the trail or in the tent. And when I say the Exped Down Socks are so perfectly warm I wear them in the house even when we're not camping, I'm not joking. They're my new favorite sock. They're so amazingly light (and compress down so easily) that they fit snuggly into a corner of my hiking bag. My new favorite camping accessory: socks that'll actually keep my feet warm! The elastic around the ankles doesn't constrict whatsoever but keeps the heat in. They're not soled but they don't need to be; I can easily move around the tent and feel around without slipping. When I'm ready to pack up, I can smush them into my gear bag without issue. They've always dried out and, after four long weekend camping trips where I've only taken them off to put on my boots, don't smell at all. The down doesn't lump at all! If something ever happened to this pair, I'd replace them in a heartbeat.
Warm down socks
Very warm and cozy down socks. I wear a size 12 and the L fit just fine - any bigger than that though would be too snug. The inside of the sock had a really nice elastic band which kept the sock in place which was a great feature.
Cozy but limited use
These little slippers were super cozy and I initially loved the silky feel of them. I took them on a damp, chilly backpack trip and they did keep my feet super toasty overnight (and my toes are always cold). But they were difficulty to keep clean and dry out fully on the trip. I also kept worrying about tearing the soft, silky exterior when I used them by the fire. They might be better for drier, colder campouts. I mostly use them now as slippers at home when I can't warm my feet up on super cold nights.
Comfy and warm
Used these booties for a recent trip to the Arctic. They’re incredibly warm and feel very secure on your feet. They’re definitely made for lounging in your tent and staying warm. There’s no grip/tread on the bottom so they’re made to be used as socks not slippers. The socks have elastic around the heel and at the top of the sock to hold them in place. The elastic around the heel is within the fabric and doesn’t scratch or itch against your skin which is nice. The elastic around the top of the sock is also non-irritating. These socks really made me feel comfy and at home while camping and made me forget I was above the Arctic circle. It wasn’t too cold on the trip, got down to about 30F at night, but I’m excited to try these socks out at colder temps because I’m sure they’re help keep me warm.
Poor loft! Not enough down!
I am totally disappointed with these booties. I bought them for camping to help keep my feet warm. I’d be better off with a pair of wool socks. The amount of down fill is so little that the loft is thin and does not keep my feet even close to warm .
Perfect Indoor Warm Booties
As a flyfishing guide in Colorado, I walk miles in wet heavy boots for hours. After a recent alpine fishing trip, I put the Exped slippers on and instantly felt my feet warm up. They are so lightweight! Definitely only for indoor wear as the soles are made of the same silky material as the rest of the slipper and there is no cushioning on the soles. Perfect for slipping on after a day of walking or hiking. Fit as sized.
