Awful fitting waist, but nice material.
On a size M the waist measures nearly 17.5" across, un-stretched. That is terrible execution. Before ordering my concern was the waist would fit fresh but would not be reinforced with a non stretch backing material an eventually stretch out to being too big. But the waist is in fact reinforced by a non stretch backing material so that wouldn't be an issue. Best advice I can give is if you anywhere near an actual size 32 (an actual size 32", not the lie you tell yourself that you can still fit in a size 32") plan on sizing down or wearing a belt with 2"+ of extra material. But if you are around a 35" waist these are your jam. I'm 6'2" 170lbs for reference. I have a size small on the way so we'll see how it goes.
Odd and underwhelming for the price
The good news (keep reading for the great news at the end): love the stretchy fabric. The bad news? The pocket openings are quite small. Like… awkwardly small if you have bigger hands. What’s even smaller: the belt loops. I don’t know what they were thinking when these were designed. I wear low profile belts but only the slimmest dress belt would fit in these loops and that might be a stretch. All said, for $105 you’re paying a lot for a pair of shorts that are, overall, odd and underwhelming. Returning these immediately. Oh, the great news: REI customer service is AWESOME!
Not stretchy
Shorts look cute enough but awkward double button closure and a very unforgiving (not stretchy) waistband make it a race against rime when you've gotta go pp. Also the waistband is not stretchy so if you're prone to weight changes you will not like these. They look cute tho.
