Lightweight, packable and comfortable
Super lightweight yet sturdy harness loaded with features for alpine climbing and mountaineering. I have only used in the crag (lead & TR) and not on a mountaineering expedition or ski tour yet, but am confident it would be very comfortable to skin or hike while wearing. Although very comfortable to wear, it's slightly less comfortable to hang in vs. other traditional harnesses; I tested it with a fall on purpose and it felt good, but can't comment on comfort during multi-pitch or long trad belays. Defining features for me are weight & packability/foldability for high alpine expeditions where every gram matters, plus RECCO and ice screw clips. I will likely still wear my BD Solution harness for the crag and gym climbing, but the Vision airNET is definitely the new go-to for mountaineering & ski touring.
Light, Well-Made, and Surprisingly Comfortable
I still remember my very first climbing harness: the Black Diamond Bod Harness. It had an oversized seatbelt waist strap, padded with purple-blue fleece, and ultra-wide leg loops for max comfort. You could have easily lifted an elephant with that thing (yes, I still have it as part of my personal museum of ancient climbing gear!). This harness completely blows that one out of the water. It's light, incredibly well-made, and about as bare-bones as you can get. Despite its minimalist design, it's surprisingly comfortable and feels secure. I was honestly amazed at how compact and lightweight it is—modern climbing at its best! I ordered a Large and, because of a recent "growth spurt" (IPAs), I probably should have gone for an XL. For reference, I'm 6'2" and 220 pounds. The leg loops are snug because I have bigger thighs, but even so, the Large worked out well for me during testing, and I didn't have any issues with comfort. The seamless belay loop is a surprising standout feature (I spun it around a few times trying to figure out how it was stitched together). While you wouldn’t think it matters, I’ve had the ridged seams on other belay loops catch my belay device’s carabiner and cause a nuisance—or worse, a tiny, heart-fluttering drop for my climber. I also like the white color—nice little touch. The lightweight nature of this harness takes a little getting used to, but it ultimately feels super secure. The overall fit is snug without being too restrictive. I didn’t experience any discomfort while climbing or belaying at the local gym. I also took a few short lead falls and hung in it for a minute or so to get a feel for the comfort level. Aside from the Bod Harness—which is the Cadillac of harnesses—it’s really no different than most harnesses. You get what you expect for something so minimal. My only real complaint is that the leg loops aren't adjustable. It’s fine for the gym and warmer weather, but if the idea is for this to be an alpine harness used in variable weather, bulkier clothing might be an issue. Other than that, this harness is a solid choice for those who want something lightweight and functional. It’s really well-made, and the materials seem like they'll hold up well to abrasions. I think the Recco is a really nice touch too, and it makes a lot of sense to have on a harness like this. It’s definitely a winner in terms of innovation and comfort. Great job, BD!
Light, Innovative, and Comfortable
This harness honestly surprised me. Taking it out of the bag for the first time, my first impressions were that it felt very light, I liked the color scheme (matches my climbing shoes), but the small strings that hold the leg loops seemed flimsy. Putting on the harness is very easy and the buckle has a nice secure feel and the top buckle rests flush in the base, which is a nice touch. The next I noticed was the seamless belay loop, this is really innovative. It does feel more secure. The only negative is that it is white and will show dirt easily (maybe a feature?). I hopped on a few autobelays to test the feel upon lowering under my body weight. It felt secure and the leg loops are comfortable and breathable. Belaying my son was no issue either, the leg loops stayed in place (size L - I’m 5’10”, 180lbs) and didn’t ride up. There are four gear loops as well on the harness, so it doesn’t fully sacrifice extra utility for weight. Even the bag, complete with ripstop nylon is well designed. This will definitely be my go to harness at the gym or crag.
comfortable, featherlight multi-sport harness
The Black Diamond Vision airNET harness is incredibly lightweight and minimalist. The single waist buckle is easy to adjust, a feature that will be especially valuable when wearing gloves in winter. The “infinity” belay loop delivers a snag-free belaying experience—one of those subtle quality-of-life improvements you might not fully appreciate until you switch back to a harness without it. Initially, I had reservations about the leg loops since they lack adjustable buckles. However, I never encountered any issues—the elastic strip ensures a secure and comfortable fit. Just be sure to check the sizing chart carefully and consider any extra bulk from winter clothing. During my indoor sport climbing sessions, I didn’t experience any discomfort related to heat or breathability. That said, this might only become a concern when climbing outdoors on a hot day. I'm eager to test this harness ice climbing. The featherlight design will make it feel like you're barely wearing a harness at all. A bonus point goes to the stuff sack—it's generously sized, making it easy to pack the harness back in without a struggle.
