Splurge - worth it to me!
I love slowly sipping morning coffee deep in the wilderness areas of the Rockies. The only way I get there: Backpack. I choose gear for low weight + performance. For this mug, how long will it keep liquid warm? My test: boiling water into room-temp mugs, sit at room temp, measure liquid (IR temp gun). How long does it take to get cold? For me, that's 120F. This Snow Peak weighs 102g and got cold in 18 min. How do they compare to my other mugs, without a lid? I don’t use a lid while sipping morning coffee in the backcountry. So, here we go. Vs a single wall stainless: no burning lips, no burning fingers, 25% lighter, got cold 17% faster. I don’t know why I still have this. Vs a standard ceramic mug: same warmth to the touch, 226% heavier, identical thermal performance. My ceramic’s handle is more comfy; it’s my at-home standard. And, no, I don't camp with it! Vs my double wall stainless mug with handle: cool-to-the-touch, 111% heavier, took 39% longer to get cold. It also has a comfy handle; it’s my FORMER backpacking mug. Vs a very popular brand double stainless mug that has no handle: cold-to-the-touch, 189% heavier, took 44% longer to get cold. Way too heavy for the backcountry. Verdict: Snow Peak! -- Other things. Great for coffee, tea, and a cup of soup! Handle: not very comfy, but worth it for folding back to save space. It will nest into my JetBoil, but not enough to close the lid with the stove, so won't be doing that in my pack. The Ti finish is difficult to clean, but similar to my long Ti spoon that reaches the bottom of meal pouches. Love that Ti leaves no plastic off-flavor, no toxins! Although I got this item for my unbiased review, I would have purchased it for this coming summer season. Worth it to me!
Should last a lifetime
This mug is double walled, therefore your drinks/soup/etc stay warmer or colder for longer. I’ve had a smaller titanium single wall mug for 19 years, but I’m a fan of this double walled with the foldable handles. Since i received it, I’ve actually been using it around the house and in the patio for beverages with ice. I love that it doesn’t “sweat” so I can place it on any surface without worrying about leaving rings on the wood. It’s a splurge but should last a life time, if you don’t misplace it.
One Mug to Rule Them All
Solid mug that holds temps better than the single-walled model and far better than any ceramic mug. Pros: Strong, lightweight, keeps liquids hot Cons: 1. Stains easily even after one use. 2. No lid available (that I can find). I've been a fan of Snow Peak * since my wife bought me a single-walled mug many years ago. It has been used and abused, has maintained its shape, abides and provides. I love that thing. This will take my beverage drinking to the next level. As a test, I wanted to know how good this mug is over a traditional ceramic mug. The testbed, this mug called "Ti" and one 16 oz Starbucks ceramic mug called "Ce". Both at room temperature (67 degrees F). Both filled with 200F water. After 5 minutes, the water in the Ti mug was 175F and the water temp in the Ce mug was 152F. It's not scientific, but you get the idea.
Pretty perfect for me
Titanium's an awesome metal, and I've had a Snow Peak titanium spork for many years and love it. I tested how warm it kept drinks by filling it to the brim with boiling water; I found that after 30 minutes in 57-59°F air temp., the water in the center was around 137°F still, which is 7-17°F warmer than other mugs, metal and ceramic. And it's less than 1/4 the weight of a large-ish ceramic mug that can hold this much liquid. Factors I don't mind at all that others might are that the surface is a fingerprint magnet, as is the case with all my bare titanium stuff and that the handles aren't super comfortable to hold as shown in the photo. That said, it's insulated, so holding the wall of the mug directly with fingers through the handle is how I actually hold it. Overall, I love the low weight, the high volume, and that titanium is just cool. It has slimmer walls than I expected given double walls, but it's well insulated nonetheless. It's my favorite mug.
Luxury necessity
I’ve had this mug for over 10-11 years, had the same size in non insulated for about 5 before it. Love both, but this one is far better. A vessel of some sort is crucial in the wilderness if you plan to drink anything or double it as a bowl. A double wall titanium mug is a luxury item but one I will not forget to pack. It’s easily in my top 5 favorite camping items. It’s lightweight, keeps my hot drinks warm long enough that I like to enjoy them. Incompatible to vacuum insulated mugs, you know what I’m talking about. Hot contents inside never burn my hands but will warm them on cool night/morning. It’ll take a beating well, and live for years to come. Mine has been on so many trips that it’s dented, dinged, logos worn off and I have to use a different brands lid to create a tight seal. Downsides are: price, that’s it! If I lost this, I wouldn’t hesitate to get another one. I would also recommend this for anybody wanting a quality mug they’ll have for a long time. I’ll use this at coffee shops around town and at home sometimes. P.S. it’s not plastic, so no worries about harmful chemicals being released
Lightweight and durable.
Probably the best titanium mug you could ever purchase. Makes your favourite trail side beverages more enjoyable.
get this double-wall mug (it won't burn your hand)
I have the Snow Peak titanium double-wall mug, the stainless steel double wall, and now also the titanium single 450 cup. They all have excellent workmanship; each is a thing of beauty, a joy forever. However, I like to have a hot beverage when I get up out of my tent, and the single-wall cup is not a pleasant way to start the day. you have to hold it by the handles, otherwise when you pour in boiling water, the cup immediately burns your hand. Then the rim is too hot against your lips. Snow Peak knows this — they sell silicone hot lips that snap onto the rim to protect your lips. But these add cost, and are liable to get lost or dirty. The double wall mugs, on the other hand, remain cool around the entire exterior, and the rim remains comfortable to sip even a very hot drink. Yes the double-wall mugs are heavier, but in my opinion worth the weight and additional expense. I bought another double-wall one, just for coffee and tea at the office. It's better than a ceramic mug, keeping hot beverages hotter, longer. And carrying around a metal mug makes me feel a bit like Solzhenitsyn or Andy Dufresne.
Lightweight+folding handles=nice hiking coffee cup
Love how lightweight this cup is with folding handles. Great to use for hiking trips. The double wall keeps your coffee hot for quite awhile but would work a bit longer and better if it had a lid. It is much better than drinking coffee straight from your Jetboil or a plastic cub, that's for sure.
Heavy and limited use
No doubt a high quality item. The insulation effectively protects you from hot temps. Thick and strong, I doubt this cup would ever deform. The handles are well attached, but this isn't a good backpacking product. Extra weight with double walls and handles are unnecessary appendage on a cup that doesn't get hot. Less versatile than single wall since it can't be used to heat water, and 450ml size is too small for eating a meal. Fail. Reviews where people use this cup at home are hilarious.
super cup
This cup is so nice. Great for morning coffee or keeping a drink cold on a warm afternoon. I added the lid and it’s even better.
