The most grippy & supportive trail shoe I've used

Received free productOverall a really great trail shoe. The treads are massive, and they stay planted on the trail, even in wet conditions. Might be the grippiest trail shoe I've tried. They do feel a little out of place on pavement, as expected, akin to a large tread mountain bike tire on pavement. They run true to size, there is some protection in the toe box, but not a ton. The support is awesome, but you can still feel the trail, which I appreciate.
My only real complaint is the lacing system. The quick lace doesn't tighten evenly as you would expect it to. I wanted it to perform like BOA system, but it took the first half mile of my run to fine tune it and get it right for the rest of the run. It feels like it wants to overtighten at the top of the lacing system, where the ankle meets the foot. Caused some uncomfortable rubbing on the top tendon, but only for a few minutes. It is definitely a Solomon shoe, with the classic high arch that always feels a millimeter too far forward. If Salomon put the BOA lacing system or conventional laces on this shoe, it would be near perfect. The shoe is 5 stars, but I don't love the lacing system, thus the 1 point off.

1. Fit: These shoes are snug in the heel & mid-section, but allow toe splay in the front. I really like the feel, and it took me no time to break in!
2. Tread: it grabs nicely both on road & on mixed / sandy surfaces
3. Laces: I like the quick lace technology, I opted for tie laces before now, but these shoes opened me up to quick laces in the future
4. Cushion: I had no problem walking, hiking, or running in these shoes
Cons:
1. They make my overpronation worse
2. They are rounded, encouraging heal-toe striking, almost to an unnatural degree
Overall, I was impressed by the construction, tread, & cushion. Even though these shoes are not for my feet, I’ll be back to this brand.

Good trail runners, narrow toe box

I used these shoes on several trail runs with a few miles of road running to and from the trailhead. I am used to a more minimalist style of trail runner, but decided to pick these up to use on recovery days when my feet are beat. I was skeptical at first because I found the toe box quite snug. It didn't seem to bother me during my runs, but I would prefer a bit more space. The lace system is fine; I don't think it's particularly better or worse than conventional laces, but I'd prefer conventional laces for ease of replacement if necessary. They required no break-in time to feel comfortable. On the trail, they felt secure and comfortable. I found them a bit clunky on more technical terrain due to the enormous stack height (forefoot stack height: 27.2mm, heel stack height: 31mm), but I expected that going into it. The lugs are deep and grippy in mud and on steep or rocky terrain. I haven't had the opportunity to test these shoes in wet conditions, but I don't expect traction will be much of a problem and the material seems like it will dry quickly, but this is just speculation. This review is only an initial impression; long term durability is very important to me, but I cannot assess that at this time. Overall, I these shoes fit the bill for my intended use case: chill, recovery trail runs. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is the narrow toe box.

High performing trail runner

Over all a great trail running shoe. Right out of the box, they fit my feet very well. Most shoes take a little time to break-in before I feel like they truly fit my feet. These however, felt molded to my feet once I tried them on. There seems to be more cushion in the middle of the shoe, which sort of pulls your heel back. Sort of strange at first, but nice when running down hill to keep your toes from hitting the front. The toe box is wide enough to allow your toes to move and breathe but not so wide as it feels like your foot is swimming in the shoe. The quick lace system is nice and doesn't slip. I got caught in some rain on my trail run and had no problems with traction. The only thing I didn't like about this shoe was the firmness of the cushioning. It has plenty of material, however it was a little too stiff for my liking. But that is more of a personal preference than anything, and will probably soften up after awhile.

Great, great shoe! Not tested on technical terrain….yet but a fa ntastic shoe combining the best from the infamous Speedcross and newer Pulsartrail. Amazing grip on almost any surface, great cushioning for longer days and propulsion. The only slight improvement I would ask for is to somehow work on how to stop the material gathering when tightened, with the awesome quick lacing system. Great and thank Salomon, this is a fantastic shoe.

Comfortable, performant trail running shoes

These are a great option for trail running or hiking. I go for runs in the local foothill trails at least once a week (10-20 mile per outing), and I've put these to the test on four separate occasions. The main thing that stands out is the unconventional "Quicklace" fastening system -- rather than the typical shoelaces on trail shoes, this allows you to pull a thin cord that weaves across the upper to your desired tightness and secure it with the attached clip. It is indeed a quick process; you pull the cord, the shoe tightens around your foot evenly, and you cinch it with the clip. It also allows you to store the dangling cord and clip in two mesh pockets above and below the main cord outlet. Quicklace advantages: (1) it's minimal, very simple, and tightens/loosens the entire shoe evenly with one point of adjustment; (2) it eliminates the problem of dangling loops from typical shoelaces that can catch on lugs and cause tripping while running; (3) it's faster than laces to tighten/loosen Quicklace disadvantages: (1) it's an all-or-nothing system: you can't modify the lacing pattern or tie advanced runners knots as you can with normal laces; (2) sometimes the cord and clip pop out of their mesh pockets when you're slipping shoes on, and it can be a tight squeeze to fit them back in I've enjoyed the comfort of these shoes (vs zero drop from a popular competitor brand). I picked a size 11 (normally 10.5) and it has worked out well, so you might consider sizing up 0.5 for extra room, which can be helpful for foot swelling after a prolonged run. I've only used these for the past month but the durability seems to be good. The lugs on the base provide excellent grip when navigating uphill over rocks. And as far as style, I like the eye-popping pink and "plum kitten" color, it's like a bit of 80s retro.

Great grippy trailrunners for moderate hiking

To preface, I'm not an experienced runner but more of an experienced hiker. I'm always looking for lighter shoes to tackle the mountains, but casual enough for the bar right after. REI gave me these trail runners to review, but these are my honest thoughts. In terms of fit, I have high arches and wide feet. The Thundercross does not have wide sizes at the time of this review, but the inner tongue was stretchy enough to accommodate my foot bed. If anything, I feel that the Thundercross runs wide, and I would caution people with narrow feet to look elsewhere. The shoes fit a bit bigger than what I expect for normal width shoes, so I would go true to size or even half a size smaller. There’s plenty of cushioning and I really like the lacing system where you can tuck the laces into a hidden pouch by the tongue. Going downhill was great, with plenty of room for your big toe to move to prevent black toenails. Durability wise, I think the shoes have decent protection for the toes. There’s adequate support to prevent rolled ankles. There’s plenty of cushioning by the arch and heel so that you don’t feel every jagged rock on your trail. The 5 mm lugs are a bit soft for my taste and I’m not sure how long they will last on the trail. I’ve had similar lugs on my Salomon X Ultra 4s and those eventually got sanded down to 1 – 2 mm after 1.5 years of moderate hiking. Grip is amazing on these trail runners. Smearing is great when scrambling up technical terrain. Hiking downhill feels secure with the contragrip lugs as per Salomon’s brand. It feels better if not more grippier than my X Ultra 4s. It does great on rocks that are slightly muddy without slipping. I would not submerge these shoes into the mud though, I would be confident with 1 – 2 inchs of mud but no more. The heel drop on these trail runners is 4 mm, which is a bit more aggressive compared to my 10 – 12 mm heel drop shoes. Lower heel drop promotes a more “natural” running stride to emphasize midfoot landing, but I personally felt it to be a bit more fatiguing, at least for me. I supinate and I found these shoes a bit challenging for me to get used to. I highly recommend jogging with low drop shoes around the store if your local REI allows you to before committing to it. It’s a different set of muscles and I personally felt it in my glutes and less on my quads. I’m not a runner but this is just my personal observations. Overall, I think these are a great hiking shoe for people with wide feet and normal / high arches. I would not get these if you have narrow feet. I think people with flat feet can get away with these shoes as the sole is fairly thin and you can add some orthotic insoles inside.

Ugly, but great shoe

For me this is almost the perfect shoe. It has a low drop, a narrow heel cup, a fitted mid foot, wider toe box, and good ground feel. It is very similar to a shoe Salomon produced a few years back called the Fellraiser. The main difference is that the Thundercross has a slightly wider toebox, but unfortunately a little less grip. Don't get me wrong the, the Thundercross has great grip compared to my other trail shoes (Topo), but I think it would be the perfect shoe if the sole from the Fellraiser were put on this shoe. Also, it is a fairly ugly shoe.

Having a foot on the wider side I’m not able to run in a lot of Salomon’s, but man am I glad I can fit this one. Tested them in some nasty technical muddy sloppy trails and these shoes are fire. The fit is almost glove like, snug in all the right places with room for toe splay. Definitely my go to shoe for nasty weather ultras this year
