Not a durable shoe
As others have said, durability issues. This is my third pair over the last couple of years. Each pair has had their own unique issue, my first pair (older generation) ended up with a hole next to my big toe. The second pair got holes in the heel lining (common) And my third pair the sole is separating from the shoe. The foam on both of the last two pairs became fatigued and lost rigidity and support pretty fast too. The glue is failing. These get daily wear as a general purpose do all outdoor and work shoe, nothing crazy. Overall, I have fallen out of love with these. After this pair failed me, I switched over to Keen Zionic and I dont think I'll be looking back
Great hiking shoes; be wary of lack of durability
Have worn Salomons for years and purchased the XA Pro 3D V9s for a 2-month trip to Spain. We spent 6 weeks this summer walking the Camino de Santiago. The shoes (bought 1/2 size up) fully met my expectations for comfort and traction on the numerous surfaces during the multiple back-to-back days of walking. The average rating is due to that lining of the interior of both heel ripping out. I required duct tape for the last 2 weeks.
Salomon is synonymous with TRASH
I don't know what's going on at Salomon but they're ****ing up. I've been dedicated to these shoes since finding REI back in 2006 (got my first pair with a membership). Bought the same pair from another store last year (REI was out of my size), laces broke and an eyelet failed in under 8 months (they didn't have REI's return policy). Reached out to Salomon and they provided minimal support outside of "we're sorry... this isn't a regular thing". Fast forward to earlier this year, got a new pair at REI and quality issues popped up at 10 month mark vs 8. Sadly I can't recommend any footwear from Salomon at this point.
Best for rough terrain
I've hiked Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, AZ USA every day for well over a decade (6 miles, 2,400 ft elevation). It's the toughest urban hike in America (in the middle of the city). The terrain is all granite, rough, and it shreds shoes like a meat grinder. I've tried many brands and styles and ONLY the XA PRO 3D holds up with both grip on the steep rocks and long-lasting tread. I recommend them to everyone! Analysis: Merrills hold up but don't grip as well; I've seen Brooks delaminate in less than 100 miles; Hoka and La Sportiva don't hold up.
Nice shoe but durablity issues
Like other three-star reviews, I basically like these shoes and I keep buying them. I am on about my fourth pair. HOWEVER, durablity is an issue. The interior heel area breaks down long before the soles wear out, or even show much wear. This has happened for my current pair, and prior pairs. I can't say this issue is getting worse over time, but it certainly isn't any better. That said, they are extremely comfortable. I these are my "urban hiking" and daily wear shoes and I am 75% on paved surfaces and 25% on gravel, grass, etc.
Not good quanlity in V9
Since the very initial use I started noticing unusual wear on the eyelets and the laces themselves, to the point that they're no longer usable, even though the sole and other parts of the shoe are still in perfect condition. I want to clarify that, although the shoes are for trail running, I've only used them for everyday, non-abusive wear. Of my seven pairs of Salomon shoes, these are the only ones that have given me problems.
Fabric failing
I never write reviews, but I have been buying this line of shoe for years. After wearing for less than a month the fabric is coming apart. Seems the quality is not there anymore.
Soles detaching from uppers
I have used these trail shoes (Solomon XA PRO 3D) fairly heavily for the last three months for hiking on and off trails. The soles are detaching from the upper part of both shoes. It looks like the soles are glued to the uppers and the glue is failing. They fit well and otherwise have been good hiking shoes, but now they are falling apart. There is still plenty of tread on both shoes and I would have expected they would have lasted significantly longer. Needless to say I am disappointed.
Great shoe, worsening durability
I like this shoe and I'm on my nth pair over 5+ years. However, it seems that durability is going downhill. Besides the soles now wearing down in under 6 months of daily use, and the fabric in the heels tearing, in the latest model a few of the shoelace eyelets failed within weeks. Older models had plastic inserts in most of the eyelets. In the latest model those were omitted in all except the top-most eyelets, allowing to laces to rub against the fabric, eventually tearing the eyelets open. Too bad a good shoe and brand is getting ruined by relentless penny pinching. :(
Best All Around Shoe
I've owned five pairs of the XA Pro 3D V8 shoes and now I have the V9 and I'm still just as happy as with the previous pairs. I've owned other Salomon shoes but this series is the best of all. The fit is superb and the toe box is roomy. This shoe is at home on most trails and all day at Disneyland. This is the non-Gor-Tex version and is more breathable and cooler for warmer temps. The only petty complaint I have is with the product photos because the shoe is lighter than what the photos show but I still like them.
