Mimics Inverted Brewing More Easily
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I'm sort of a coffee nerd and have used most of what's out there for fussy coffee-making techniques, including the original Aeropress and now the Aeropress Go. Either version combined with this flow control filter cap makes coffee making outdoors simple, durable, inexpensive, sustainable, and ensures a great cup. I've had a lot of fun tinkering with this and learning how to make great coffee from it using different recipes. The coolest thing about this new cap is that it doesn't let any water drip out of the bottom of the Aeropress during brewing regardless of which type of filter I used (paper or steel). Essentially, it mimics the key feature of the thousands of inverted Aeropress recipes published online - without actually having to invert the brewer! Just fill with grounds, and water, wait, and then plunge! I wholeheartedly endorse this cap (or the inverted method) as the way to go to get the best full-bodied cup of coffee out of any Aeropress (especially if you're using the reuseable filter). I was also able to review the reuseable stainless steel filter which is super sustainable and keeps you from running out of filters during your trip - a great addition to the system since you mo longer rely on suction to keep your coffee inside the brewer. Using this reuseable filter with the flow control cap is in my opinion the best combination of accessories for the Go since it simplifies the process while still yielding a great cup!
Good accessory for coffee nerds
The flow control cap is an interesting addition to an aeropress. If you like coarse ground coffee it is necessary to have this, otherwise all of the coffee will pass through the filter too quickly. There are some additional benefits and a couple of quirks with this accessory. By limiting the flow of water you can extend the brew time, which is helpful for cold brew and lighter roasts. Being able to accommodate any grind is a huge benefit because you are truly able to fine tune whatever coffee you are using or prefer. There are two issues when using the flow control cap instead of the standard. The first issue is that clean up using the paper filter is not as easy because the paper filter will get stuck to the texture of the cap. Not a huge problem but definitely takes away one of the benefits of the aeropress. The other issue is that due to the taller height of the cap, the system doesn’t stack and stay together, so this will also affect the easy packable benefit as well.
For the discerning coffee drinker
Pros: uniform extraction Cons: there really aren't any cons but for a brew time of 15 seconds I was not able to notice an appreciable difference between the coffee brewed with this cap vs the standard filter cap. Summary: The Flow Control Filter control cap is intended for the true coffee aficionado looking for the perfect cup of coffee or espresso. It is also useful for individuals who prefer longer brew times. It probably won't make much of a difference for the average coffee drinker who prefers a short brew time (10-30 seconds). When water is added to the coffee using the regular filter cap that comes with the Aeropress Go Travel Press, water starts to drip through due to gravity which results in underextracted drippage. How much drips through is dependent on the immersion time: A little bit of underextracted coffee mixed in with properly extracted coffee probably won't make much of a difference to most people. A longer immersion means a larger proportion of underextracted coffee will drip through so the taste may be effected. This flow cap prevents drippage thereby resulting in uniform extraction when the press is pushed down. I first tested the product in my kitchen to compare it to the regular flow cap that comes with the Aeropress Go. I did a 15 second brew and the drippage was minimal. I wasn't able to taste the difference between the coffee made with this filter cap vs the other filter cap. They were both delicious. Although I may experiment with water temperature, grind size, brew time etc in my kitchen in the future, my main use is for camping and the coffee made with either cap is far superior to the instant coffee I favored in the past.
A great addition toi an amazing coffee maker
When REI sent me the AeroPress Go Coffee Press to test, I wondered if this add on would even be needed. The AeroPress Flow Control Filter Cap took a good product (The AeroPress Go Coffee Press) and made it great. When I tried the AeroPress Go with just the included drip cap and filters, I found it under-performed a bit. Don't get me wrong the coffee was good, but a little less robust than I would have liked it. The problem was that too much of the water dripped through before the 30 seconds of brewing time and the press through. The Flow Control Filter cap takes that issue right out of the equation. Replacing the stock cap that comes with the AeroPress with this product creates a negligible difference in the weight being carried as they roughly the same size and composition. Where this shines is in performance though. When I swapped the Flow control cap in for the stock set up, the water stayed in the pressure tube until the plunger actually pressed it into the cup. No more having half of the water dripping through early. The coffee produced was richer and more robust that when I made it using the original cap. If you are a fan of more robust coffee, darker roasts and deeper flavors, I highly recommend adding this filter cap to your AeroPress Go before your next excursion.
Take the coffee shop with you on the trail
The flow control filter cap adds versatility and is great to use with store-bought ground coffee. It allows you to steep grounds longer and when used with the aeropress metal filter, creates a beautiful crema and delicious espresso.
Excellent addition to AeroPress systems
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. This is a great addition to the AeroPress system. It makes the coffee quite a bit better tasting and it was pretty good before. If you're familiar with AeroPress, this negates having to invert the system when brewing to prevent the coffee dripping out while trying to let it brew. Because it takes pressure to expel the coffee using this gives the coffee a richer flavor and nice foam/cream. If using this with the Go Travel Coffee Press, just know it won't be able to nest with the system. It's too tall compared to the regular filter top to allow this. My only complaint about the whole system now is that they should offer a bigger rubber cap on the travel system to accommodate the size of this. Since you use this with either the paper filter or reusable filter, it's easy to clean and just needs a rinse when out camping.
A fine cap.
I lost the stock filter cap, and decided to try this flow control cap. It's a fine replacement that makes a great cup of coffee equal to or better than the cap that comes with the Aeropress. Two cavetes: 1. I have an older Aeropress, and I can barely lock the cap tabs into place. A half turn, at the most. It's sufficient. I don't know if this is an issue with more current aeropresses. 2. The latest batch of paper filters fit weird, as if they are too big for this cap. They stay in place, especially if dampened. Overall, this is a fine cap. I would consider it as a replacement for a lost cap, but I wouldn't seek it out.
Definitely a good add
Much better than the OG cap the Aero comes with. Helps avoid dripping before brewing. Only thing the squirt middle might eventually be tricky to clean. Overall though a great additional item for this travel press.
Worth the lil struggle for great coffee
one of those things I didn’t know I needed until buying. Pros: it makes the Aeropress even better as it gives you more control. The water won’t start flowing through until you’re ready to press. So the coffee is brewed exactly to your liking. Don’t have to use the inverted method which was a little dangerous when making hot coffee. Cons: understandable to create a tight seal, it can be a battle to put on as it is a tight fit. Not ideal when you’re weary in need of a morning fix. But as with everything, practice and fine tuning has made this easier. And worth it for the almost crema like froth for my espresso I’ll get whilst traveling and camping
It's good for home but has some issues
This is a step up from the cap that comes with the AeroPress but it has two problems. 1) The AeroPress Go will no longer close up nicely if you want to use this for that. 2) The filter ALWAYS gets stuck now and I have to pull at it with my fingernails or a utensil to get it out. Really like just popping out the used grounds and the filters straight into the trash.
