I’ve purchased multiple different hiking clothing from AofA. I love just about all of them. I have some of their lighter layers and some thicker as well. I like this weight as it’s a nice addition to the current line offered on their website. For the sensitive user (like me), there can be a slight itch initially, but more than worth it as they soften over time. Lovin alpaca and love the fit of these clothes, especially the antibacterial quality and low eco impact! They’ve become everyday wear and not just base layer/hiking wear for me. I normally wear a size large and a large fits me very well.
I bought this in preparation for an ultra-endurance unsupported multi-day race that would see both hot and cold conditions near the arctic circle. I used it in training and was so impressed I ended up buying every weight from the t-shirt to the 300 hoodie, my only regret was not getting the leggings prior to my race. Pro's 1. In hot weather the 160 shirt remained comfortable and I could wear a long sleeve to get some sun and wind protection without overheating. 2. In cold weather I could easily layer these or just opt for a heavier weight. One of the things I looked most forward to in camp was putting on my 300 hoodie for the night, super comfortable!! 3. When wet, which was 90% of the time, I remained comfortable in both hot and cold weather, this is by far the BEST garment I've had for wet conditions. Dew and rain prevented anything from drying out while we slept and we were forced to put on cold and wet clothes nearly every morning. The initial shock of putting on cold wet gear was gone in minutes and I remained comfortable for the rest of the day! 4. Smell, I used synthetic leggings, and after 3 days of use, the smell was enough to immobilize a small army, the same holds true with my dry-fit athletic shirts used for training. Since getting the Arms of Andes products I could go weeks without washing and never get a foul odor. I know it sounds gross, but when you're unsupported for days on end this is a HUGE bonus. Con's 1. I do experience very light itchiness in the first few minutes of wearing the alpaca wool. For me it doesn't last long and sometimes I don't get any itchy sensation at all. I think this varies from individual to individual, but for me these were significantly less itchy than Merino or any other wool products I've used. My family give me a hard time because I rarely wear anything else these days, these have become my go to garments for everything.
package showed up sliced into with a knife of some sort, this is what I pulled out of my mailbox
I really love this Alpaca Wool Base Layer. It's incredibly warm, soft, and versatile. The fit is perfect, and its natural odor resistance is a bonus. Definitely recommended for winter and camping activities.
Why do I always try to improve on a good thing. REI brand light Marino is a better product.
The alpaca material is very similar to Merino wool but it feels a bit more comfortable. Like Merino it can be worn repeatedly without picking up an odor. It is versatile for temperature range. Easy to launder. Overall a great piece for travel, hiking or other activities.
Runs a bit small. Very nice, I recommend. Is less itchy than the Smartwool and Icebreaker I have.
I REALLY wanted to like this shirt. I have 5 pairs of alpaca socks and I had an alpaca sweater that I bought in Peru.. I wanted to add a travel shirt. My wife bought me this in blue. The fit is fine, but it itches. I haven't looked at the fibers under a microscope, but it feels like merino wool, not alpaca. I'm returning it.
Small holes after a gentle cycle wash and hung dry. Itchy when worn. Did have great temperature regulation though.
