Good on and great off the bike
I'm a serious cycling enthusiast and year-round commuter, and I've been needing a pair of casual bike shoes to fill a gap in my cycling footwear. I've waited too long to get something like this, mainly because my local REI and LBS don't usually have something similar in stock; as a result, I purchased these reluctantly through the Shimano website. My initial impressions of the EX7 are very positive, and the quality seems superb. The materials are impressive, and I expect these will last many years. The fit of the 47 is spot-on for me. I typically wear a 12US mens in a D width, or sometimes an 11.5, and prefer a decently wide toe box. For cycling, I own Sidi Carbon Wire Vent road in 47, Sidi Dominator Mega (wide) MTB in size 46, and 45Nrth Ragnarok and Wolvhammer boots in size 48 to accommodate thick socks. Trying on while wearing medium weight cycling sock, the EX7 fit well in the toe box and in length, and the heel is comfortable. Tightening the BOA completely induces slight puckering at base of the tongue, suggesting sufficient room for riders requiring even more width or wearing thicker socks. In terms of arch support, I am a long time fan of using Specialized insoles and likely will adopt them with the EX7s asap because the support is inadequate for me (the reason for 4 stars, instead of 5). The shoes are comfortable enough out of the box, but I will want to get my ankle into a better position with improved support and perhaps a Varus wedge for the forefoot. The BOA closure is also very nice, and the shoes both tighten down and slip off wonderfully. On the bike, I was immediately struck by the softness of the sole. I've always wanted a hybrid cycling shoe for more comfortable walking when shopping, etc. The EX7 sole is much softer than any road/MTB/winter cycling-specific shoe or boot I've ever owned. It will be really nice for walking, but this is not a shoe that I will plan to wear for any serious ride, as the softness does not bode well for efficiency. Nonetheless, these will be more than sufficient for relaxed commuting and running errands. Based on my initial impressions, if I had to choose a single shoe for touring, it would depend on whether the plan was to spend lots of time seeing sights off the bike, where comfort gained walking would be more important than the better efficiency of MTB shoes that I've used on previous tours. Off the bike, these EX7s will be a delight! They are very comfortable for walking and look decent -- they don't scream "cycling shoe." They will work with shorts or jeans or casual pants. In contrast to my Sidi MTB shoes, I should be able to wear them out for dinner or other relaxed activities when otherwise I typically bring another pair of shoes in my bike bag and change at my destination. No more swapping shoes on the sidewalk before going into a restaurant or after leaving a bar. Also, the outsole has nice, rubbery traction that I will appreciate often on our slick steps at home or when the entry floors are wet at work. I've fallen a few times descending icy stairs in my MTB shoes, and I was thrilled by the ease of descending the first steps in these EX7s. One initial word of caution that the cleat mounting is not fully recessed: walking with new SH-SM51 cleats in the new shoes was noticeably "crunchy" on the sidewalk as the new cleats ground the pavement. At least until the front of the cleat wears down over time (or I use a Dremel to grind down the front), I will refrain from wearing these inside our house because of concern that any protrusion of the cleat or compression of the outsole rubber will allow the cleat to damage wood floors. In summary from an initial impression of fit and a short ride, these Shimano EX7s are a great addition to my cycling shoe arsenal. The fit is very good for me, and the quality out of the box is excellent with nice materials and build. They won't be as efficient on the bike as traditional MTB or road shoes, but they will be far superior off the bike. I won't be surprised if I end up wearing them far more than expected on my commuter and gravel bikes.
Stylish Bike Shoes
Comfortable and stylish shoes. I like the fact there are no velcro closure straps.
