First french press I won't be able to break!

There are several things that I love about this french press. First and foremost, I have managed to break 3 different french press in the last couple years due to clumsiness. I already dropped this one twice (once on concrete) and it did not break or crack or anything. I wanted to wait to review this until we actually took it camping and we did this weekend and it was fantastic! I historically used a pour over for camping but this was much better because you don't have to sit and slowly pour the hot water over. I don't think I would take this backpacking due to size but for car camping it is great. It is also a fantastic french press for daily use!

The OXO Campgrounds French Press 2.0 is durable and light weight, making it a great to use outdoors. It was really easy to use and kept the coffee decently warm. It came apart pretty easily and clean up was quick. It was the perfect French press to bring camping.

Solid Non-Breakable French Press Option

This French Press is not breakable and lightweight, which makes it appealing as a primary coffee option to me when car camping. I am happy that I'll no longer need to pack a full sized coffee pot or my other french press, which both use glass carafes. For backpacking, I'd probably stick with instant coffee or a hand press due to size and clean-up. I gave the OXO a few test runs before relying on it to fulfill all of my caffeine needs. I loved that the carafe has recommended lines for filling grounds and and max line for water (32 oz) to eliminate guessing games. It also comes out with a guide that can be cut out and brought with you (see pic). It was very straight forward to use. A few notes -- I found that the plunger missed a few more of the coffee grounds than my usual french press, but not enough to mess up my coffee experience. The grey lid slides in and out of the plastic carafe without tension an inch or two, which I found kind of odd. Just something to be aware of when pouring, I've been using a second hand to make sure it doesn't fully slip out. If you're looking for a non-breakable coffee making apparatus but don't want to make it by the cup using a hand press, this is a good option. I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review.

Good French press for the camper and traveler

This is a functional, well built French press coffee maker. It weighs in under one pound (12.25 oz), making it appropriate for backpacking if carrying a luxury item is called for. The container, or beaker, that hold the grounds and water is secured inside a frame with a handle, so if you are a gram counter, in theory you could leave the frame at home, bringing only the beaker and press/lid, however you would need something to insulate your hand when you pour your brew. It will make about 1 liter of coffee, enough for two people. Because it is clear, you can view the progress of your brew. It is made mostly from lightweight plastic so gentle use is suggested. I’m not certain it will hold up to daily home usage quite the way a more stoutly built press should, but it should hold up to regular and frequent camping and travel experiences. It is not insulated, but if it was insulated, it would likely weigh more, be bigger and less suitable for packing light. I like that there is a strainer at the spout that largely keeps grounds that have escaped the press from entering your cup, but it is not a true screen. Like nearly any French press, the brew is not filtered through a paper filter, which has been shown to help reduce cholesterol, so if that is important to you, consider the type of device you use. The price point is commensurate with other similar devices. Gram counters might consider a non-unitasker, like a compact cook system with French press attachment, though my experience indicates the OXO makes a better tasting, clearer brew. Overall, I find the OXO makes a good cup of coffee, can work effectively with pre-ground coffee (as opposed to a custom grind) and weighs less than other options. I received this press at no cost in exchange for my honest review, but I had seen it before and considered trying it before this offer was made.

Good almost to the last drop.

I cannot imagine starting a morning without a good strong cup of coffee, and the taste of French press coffee definitely tops my list of personal favorites. I have been known to bring a traditional glass French press despite the risk of shattering it, so I really appreciate the sturdy unbreakable design of this version for use away from home. I have been trying this press both at home and also on sunrise hikes to nearby trail systems, where I'm leaving so early I'm barely awake but can't forego my morning coffee. It's easy to prep with indicators for both the coffee level at the bottom and also the maximum water level at the top, and it's easy to transport. The silicone around the edges of the press plunger allows it to slide easily, which is appreciated. I gave it an overall 4 stars instead of 5 because of the way the strainer near the pour spout tends to get blocked with small pieces of coffee grounds. I grind my own coffee beans, and both my home grinder and my portable ceramic burr grinder yield a fairly fine ground, so perhaps this would be less of an issue with packages of pre-ground coffee that tend to have larger diameter pieces. But some of my grounds always manage to escape the silicone rim of the plunger and ultimately block the strainer at the pour spout, leaving my last few sips of delicious coffee trapped inside the press. That small issue aside, this is a great product that will continue to accompany me on short trips. I don't like a French press on multiple-day trips due to the problems of cleaning them in the field from an LNT perspective. At home this cleans up easily and I can add the spent grounds directly to my flower bed. It's perfect for early morning trailhead coffee and single-night camping trips, where I can accomplish my cleanup task back at home where I have access to running water and an easy means of grounds disposal.

Car camping essential

I am drinking my first cup of coffee brewed with the OXO French Press and it works great, no grinds escaped into my brew. I did not have a problem with the plunger staying upright while the coffee brewed as one review mentioned. I also really like the flexible plastic flange that keeps grinds where they should be, it works better than the metal flange on my previous FP. The inner container looks like glass but is a very clear plastic that seems like it will be quite durable. This is going to be a must have for me on future car camping and yurt/cabin trips. I previously was making using an ESPRO for camping but as that only makes one cup at a time (yes my cup is 16 oz) so this will be much better as there will be no more fighting over the first cup of coffee :-) My only wish is that it came with a plastic measuring spoon to keep inside. There is a coffee mark on the carafe but I like to measure by the spoonful. But overall I would definitely recommend this product if you are looking for good campground coffee. I received this product in exchange for an honest review.

As Good As It Can Be, Indoors or Out

Coming from a bit of a self-identifying coffee snob, who drinks almost every brewed form coffee EXCEPT for french press, I was a little reticent after knowing that a lot of french presses struggle to contain rogue grinds regularly, have awkward pouring patterns, and shatter if you look at them the wrong way. Thankfully, OXO has done it again with a product that avoids all of these problems. I found that 12:1 water to coffee ratio works great for a tasty brew, and you will never have to worry about this shattering in your camping duffel unless you really pile a ton of weight on top of it. I washed it once prior to using the first time (yes, it's even dishwasher safe!), and so far have not had any residual plastic taste that you may expect from a product that involves plastic and near-boiling water. I was expecting to bring this car camping mainly, but I think it has found it's spot on my regular coffee rotation at home as well. I am curious to see how it holds up over time and how much it can really take at the campsite, but so far so good. It may be nice for OXO to consider an insulative sleeve for camping colder climates, or even other brewing devices, but this little knick knack will do the trick for many years to come. I even provided a picture of proof of how few rogue grinds make it into the average brew (near zero).

Does the job!

I should start by saying I'm a big OXO fan. I already own a lot of their kitchen products so I was excited to try this. After just taking it apart to wash, I was impressed that the clear container seemed very durable - definitely didn't feel like cheap plastic. I spent a good bit of time looking for measuring instruction (it's been a while since I used a french press) before I noticed the fill lines on the side - one for the level of coffee and the other for water. It would've been nice if that was written on the box somewhere. I'm not sure if I accidentally threw away the instructions in the unboxing, but I also didn't see any information describing the recommended coffee grind size, or how long the coffee should be steeped. I ground my coffee at the coarsest level, and I could still see some grounds escaping from the sides when I was pushing on the press. All of this said, my coffee was delicious. There are a few minor issues, but I still would recommend this product, especially if you're looking for a low tech way to make 2 to 4 (depending on the size of your mug) cups of coffee.

It works well enough…

This is a value french press that performs like a value french press. Is the price good? Yes. Did it meet my expectations? Yes. But it definitely doesn’t exceed them. Build quality is solid, as i would expect from the OXO brand, and the plastic material seems really durable. But the filter itself isn’t great. Even with a coarse grind, the grounds were getting through the filter. But hey, having any coffee at the campground is way better than having no coffee. I’ll still continue to use it and would recommend.

Easy to use, nice french press for camping!

I've just used this on a couple camping trips so far, but I love it! I appreciate the coffee line at the bottom so it's not too weak or strong! Mostly easy to clean minus the mesh, but thats normal. Grounds get in there sometimes, but not sure if thats me or the french press haha!
