All Around Great!!
A perfect helmet. I use it as a daily commute and all purpose helmet, as it is intended. It is a little heavy and bulky for long road rides, but that is not it's forte. Pros Safety Light - clip on red light. Really like how it clips on and off. Plenty bright and two modes of solid or flash. Great convenient safety precaution. Clasp - I did not think there was a need for innovation here, but the magnetic clasp that slides together is intuitive and smooth. It took a couple attempts to get used to it, but I really like it now. Easy to use one handed. Comfort - slim but ample padding plus the shape and Mips adjustment knob made for a great fit and feel. It is slightly lighter or as light as my mountain bike helmet. Mips - a must have at this point Cons Profile and Style - very minor, but just wish it was a bit slimmer in profile on my narrow head but it is standard thickness foam and honey comb technology. It looks very similar to my ski helmet.
As Good a Helmet as You'd Expect from Smith
Well, it's been just over a week since I received my Smith Dispatch helmet and can now write a proper review. Before I begin, a bit about me and how I ride: I am on a hybrid bike and I typically commute to/from work, run errands, and ride gravel and trails. Let's get the techy stuff out of the way first - yes with the MIPS system and various safety certifications (along with the Smith Optics reputation), you know you're getting a top of the line piece of safety gear. I have no doubts whatsoever that, if the need arose, my head would be very well protected. And let's hope that need never arises! Yup, quality stuff right there. But no matter how great or safe a helmet is, if it's not comfortable then you're not going to wear if and then it's completely irrelevant how great a piece of gear it is. Worry not. I've owned a lot of helmets over the years and they've been, at best, "not too bad", The Dispatch helmet, however, is hands down the most comfortable helmet I've ever owned or worn. My head is... "not petite" and I was a bit worried when I got the "large" because often that size is a bit too snug and somewhat ill-fitting. With the Dispatch, however, there was ample room and using the VaporFit dial adjustment and straps, I was able to quickly and easily get the helmet fitting properly. When I ride, the helmet stays firmly in place but still remains comfortable. The ventilation system is surprisingly effective. When I first saw the helmet, the ventilation slits seemed too small to be effective but, again, I was wrong. I've now worn this helmet in temperatures up to 92 degrees Fahrenheit and my head never felt like it was going to overheat from lack of airflow. Finally, I really appreciate the integrated rear light. It fits snuggly on the back, easy to remove and recharge, and can easily be seen during the brightest parts of the day. It has three modes: constant on, slow-flashing, and rapid-flashing. I typically ride with rapid-flashing during the day and slow-flashing in the evening. I can't say anything about the run time yet - I've probably ridden with the helmet for a total of four hours this past week so there's been no need to recharge it yet. Obviously I am a huge fan of this helmet. But with that said, I do have a couple concerns. First, a helmet like this comes with a fairly steep price tag. It's worth it if you can afford it but know that it's not inexpensive. Secondly, the plastic clips on the light (see picture) appear to be the same shape/type that often break off after a few times. So far they seem fine but I am curious to see if, after several times removing and re-installing the light for charging if the clips will break. Even if they do, I'll just toss some Velcro on the helmet to keep it attached. So, overall, this is a fantastic helmet that has earned the 5 stars I am giving it.
Solid Helmet!
This is a solid helmet. It is a wee bit on the heavier side than a regular helmet, but it is sturdy. An amazing feature is that it comes with a clip on red tail light! Super cool. It increases confidence in being seen. The magnetic clasp took me a couple of frustrating minutes to work out (why I don’t know! - you just slide the two pieces up and down from each other!) but the clasp does work and holds the straps in place nicely to give a comfortable fit. For fine tuning the knob on the back tightens things up. The padding on the inside of the helmet is generous to add to the comfortable feel.
Comfy, cool helmet!
This helmet comes off and on really easily. It has a magnetic chin latch that I couldn't figure out at first. Once I got used to it, it works pretty slick. It has a lot of padding and great venting. I rode it riding around town in the city and out camping on the coast. I haven't had a chance to try out its protection in a collision situation but it looks like it would hold up to some abuse. Another solid Smith product.
Comfortable and feels safe
The good: Great ventilation, doesn't get too warm even on a hot day. Sharp looking, good fit, love the padding inside. Took a minute to get used to the clip fastener, but I quite enjoy it now. What could be better: The strap needs to be re tightened every other ride and there is a 'tail' of excess strap material that bounces around.
Close to perfect
Overall this is a really nice helmet. I've been using it for the last week on both my bike commute to work (14 miles a day) and a couple other rides around the neighborhood. The dial adjustment makes for a quick fit, I really like the Fidlock buckle on the chin strap, and the LED rear light is quick to charge and easy to use. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that compared to my Smith Forefront 2 (same size), it feels like it sits awkwardly high on my head which it turn makes it feel a little more bulky.
Safe, good-looking helmet
This a solid a safe helmet. It looks good, feels fairly comfortable, is lightweight, and has plenty of high-tech features like the FidLock buckle (not sure I’ll ever buy a helmet without one again). It also has top-knot h safety features and feels like it will protect your head/brain (luckily I didn’t actually test this). The only real downside is airflow/ventilations is not great. Probably best for a commute rather than a long fun ride.
Solid helmet!
I'd give this 4.5 stars if I could. This is a great helmet!R I was impressed when I first pulled the helmet out of the box. It looks sleek, and you can really tell that they put a lot of effort into the details. Instead of the pads that I'm used to in my old helmet that have exposed foam sides, this helmet has thinner foam pads with edges sewn together. That being said, since the foam isn't thick it's not quite as comfortable as my old helmet, but the dial in the back helped me adjust the size so it feels very secure. The magnetic clasp is so cool! I love how it just snaps together. Opening it for the first few times felt kind of clumsy, because I'm so used to the clasps where you have to push the tabs into the buckle to unfasten. With this one, you push the sides so that the magnets get far enough apart, and the top and bottom separate. Once you get used to it, it's great. Easily one of my favorite things about the helmet (it's the little things). The helmet is very solid and well constructed. It's heavier than my old helmet, and I didn't like that at first. I've been using the helmet while I'm commuting to work on my scooter and it has been incredibly hot so far this summer. There aren't as many vents in the helmet as I'm used to, so I was afraid that I would be too hot, but the helmet itself actually sits pretty high up on my head. When I reach in the back, I can fit my hand in between my hair and the helmet. So there's airflow, but I still feel safe since I can use the adjustable dial to make sure the helmet doesn't budge when I turn my head. It does look really big on my head, but I'm willing to compromise style for safety. This helmet is a big upgrade safety-wise from my old helmet. Hopefully I never need it, but the MIPS system is a big plus. They included a couple extras with the helmet: a drawstring fabric/mesh bag and a rechargeable light that clips to the back of the helmet. The bag is nice to have because my work bag can't hold the helmet. It's nice that it's half mesh so that the helmet can air out after I use it, even when it's still in the bag. The light is bright, and has three different modes (always on, fast blinking, and slow blinking). I'm also grateful that it's rechargeable so I don't have to deal with batteries. I could not figure out where the light attached to without looking at pictures online. None of the information included in the box had instructions that I could find, but just look at pictures online if you can't figure it out. Overall, it's a big upgrade from my old helmet. I wish that it wasn't as bulky and was a touch lighter, but it does feel very secure, so I'll keep using this as my everyday helmet.
Nice for urban biking
As an urban biker I am very happy with this helmet. I especially like the drawstring bag that come with it, a great way to carry my helmet around ( especially when I am not carrying my backpack). The re-chargeable light is bright and has three modes. The helmet is adjustable, has a magnetic chin strap, and fit my ponytail. A must. A bit heavy, but very secure. I like to have a visor, but the small lip was nice too.
Excellent Protection and Comfort, But With One Not
The Smith Dispatch is an outstanding helmet in almost every respect. It's comfortable, stylish, and packed with top-tier safety technology that makes it ideal for any e-bike commuter. I would readily recommend it for its fit and protective qualities alone. However, prospective buyers should be aware of the fragile nature of the rear light's clip. It's a significant letdown in an otherwise stellar product. If the integrated light is a major selling point for you, this issue might be a deal-breaker. For me, the helmet's other qualities outweigh this flaw, but it's a frustrating blemish on a product that comes so close to perfection.
