I'm too vain
I was excited for this, eager to get it and use it. I grabbed the package as soon as it was delivered and started putting it on my beautiful bike ... and I hated it. It just seemed so bulky, like I had crashed into a jungle gym and I was dragging the jungle gym along behind me. Instead I bought a bike rack that attached to my seat post. It costs the same but only holds 20 pounds instead of 70, the new rack isn't nearly as stable, and my thighs rub against the new rack's clamp. But I like the look so much more. A couple friends said I was being silly, but this cage over my tires just looked so clunky to me.
Nice rack, pain to use
I was excited about the MTX system when we ordered the bike and Nate at REI was super helpful in his recommendations, but I find the MTX more frustrating than helpful. REI installed the racks for us when we picked up the bikes. I find it awkward lining up the mounting bracket on the bottom of the accessory with the track in the cargo rack. The bracket doesn't slide easily in the track which is a pain. Then you have to drag it the full 9"-10" of the rack until it clicks into place. Not a problem if you leave the accessory on the bike all the time but it seems the whole point of the MTX system is "easy on / easy off." To take advantage of the MTX track you are limited to what Topeak offers in their MTX line (no mid-volume basket for example and the basket offered is too big to fit many bikes). The rack is well made, the finish is great, it looks fantastic on our Cannondale Allroad Neos. The MTX system just doesn't add any value in my opinion. Our other bikes have basic racks with a simple basket that takes 1 second to put on, even full of groceries, and 1 second to remove. It's way better.
Not compatible with rack mount child seat
I purchased this to use with a rack mounted child seat. nowhere in the description on REI or on the products own website is this say that it should not be used with a child seat however on the packaging of the item in tiny letters and buried deep within the instructions it states "DO NOT install any child carrier on the rack" Nowhere in REI's listing or of the listing of the product on the website which I checked does it say this. Before ordering this product and confirming the dimensions fit my child seat I checked both REI and the products official page. now I have to go through the hassle of a return and waiting to get another rack.
Neat Design
Works as advertised and it’s really cool with the rail allowing you to glide and lock different cargo packs and racks on it. It’s also pretty stable and I don’t really feel it.
I wish instructions were more clear
My previous bike had hydraulic disk brakes, but the regular version of MTX rack that fit. This time, the chain stay on the new one turned out too narrow, so I had to get the disk brake version of the rack instead. Hard to guess which version will work on which bike. Installation was easy, but only because this was my third time. The two page sheet that comes with the rack does not have step by step directions and this is the only bike accessory I have to install by bending metal rods. It feels wrong somehow. :) You can buy cheaper versions if you don’t care about the easy attach bags that Topeak sells, but I’ve used one of those bags for 8 years and I’ve been pretty satisfied with it, so it is worth the added cost to me.
Clean form-factor and multi-functional
I was able to install this rack in about 20 minutes. You'll need some tools like an allen key, wrench, and a level would help too. The instructions provided with the cargo rack could be better. Also, when you're first putting the horizontal brackets on, be sure to keep everything very loosely secured until you get all the bolts in place. It is very well constructed and so far riding around I have heard no rattling. Very satisfied!
Nice rack
This cargo rack mounted easily onto my gravel/touring bike. Sturdy and stable, high quality. One small complaint is that the mounting bolts are not black like the rack. Cheapish appearance. I have not tried the Topeak slide-on accessories.
Nice option for E-bike
I picked up this Cargo Rack to get set up on a Propella 7S E-Bike, and the rack fit great on the bike! Plenty of space to get the rack situated around the Disc brakes and very easy to install. I might even like this Cargo Rack better than my old Jandd rack that wouldn't work with an E-bike! I would definitely recommend this rack to others as a sturdy quality rack. My Ortlieb pannier set (Classic backroller) works great on it and haven't had any issues with heel contact with panniers on the rack - great clearance.
Would recommend!
Sturdy, simple, fits my Ortlieb panniers, my local REI installed it (on a Co-op Cycles CTY 1.1 Bike).
Good solid product
Love the bike rack. Longer extender bars were needed for install but REI handled it. Good solid bike rack for the bag I carry.
