Beauty and Comfort Combined
It was time to get a new helmet. My KASK helmet is 9 years old. I love my KASK helmet. Unfortunately they stopped making it. Doing my due diligence, I found the TREK Velocis MIPS helmet to have the highest rating of all helmets available in the United States. I’ve used it on a 26 mile ride and it was everything I hoped for. At higher speeds it’s incredibly quiet. It’s more than comfortable. It’s almost like not even wearing a helmet. One thing I like is also looking good on the ride. This is the most beautiful and attractive helmet I’ve seen. My 5year old grand son said it’s sick. I asked if that means he likes it. He does. It is really a beautiful helmet.
Great Fit if in-between M & L
Head is about 59'' so larges look like mushrooms and most mediums are too snug. This medium is perfect
A New Helmet Journey for me: Trek Velocis
I just bought the Trek Velocis to replace my destroyed Giro Synthe which saved me in a recent accident (the helmet thankfully did its job very well). I've been a satisfied Giro wearer for decades (but no accidents prior) and wanted to look at the current crop top flight road helmets across the major brands. I read some independent reviews looking for objective insights/testing of the features, design philosophy, fit and safety refinements, also filtering marketing hype from features that I will actually value. Went to a few shops to look and try on some higher end helmets. The helmet industry has exploded with so many manufacturers with so many price points and so many different models/styles/applications....it's a jungle out there! I'm simple guy, an old roadie riding recreationally on pavement for decades but always pretty demanding on buying quality gear. I'm more apt to trust an established manufacturer with a proven track record and expect the build quality/QC and meeting safety be a given. But I'm fine paying more for a better fit, lighter weight, better ventilation, better materials, higher build quality and thoughtful design refinements, the Trek Velocis seemed to check all those boxes for me. My initial impressions (it's early, only two weeks): 1. Fitting: My head measures 21" and I prefer the smaller shell size whenever possible (closer fit, less weight, less float, better vison, less mushrooming) it was a size Small for me. 2. Fitting adjustments: The variety of adjustments was a big plus to get a "perfect" fit. I was impressed by the simplicity/ease of the single lace BOA circumference adjustment (micro-fine dial). The snap-in three position Rear Anchor adjusted the fore to aft rotation to properly clear my eyebrow (the helmet rotated too forward in the OEM center position). But the adjustment for the Rear Anchor is not intuitive and takes so much force for the removal/reinsertion that I thought that I broke the hinged tab (the illustrated instructions was cryptic and not very helpful). The soft flexible straps and the strap dividers allow for very critical adjustments between the head, helmet rotation, the ears, the side of the face and to the lower chin (without the tight choking feel). It took me three rides and several adjustments to get it right. I'll also note that the chin strap bucket (right buckle for chin length adjustment) has a tendency to slip and strap length needs to be retightened frequently (I ended up sewing the straps together with a small stich to solve the annoyance). 3. Helmet shape/construction: The shell looks well made molded over the shock absorbing EPS foam with no external foam exposure (less potential damage to EPS during normal handling). The front edge is beveled up for a better line of sight. The OCLV carbon reinforcement looks beefy and should add better structural rigidity/margin upon impact. The fully padded Mips Air insert is low profile and contacts most of the head. A bonus: The lower shell band wraps nicely towards the front and give a nice surface to attach my trusty Blackburn rearview mirror 1.5" extended from the front edge of the helmet (better view to the rear without creating irritating blind spot, an improvement from previous helmets that required mounting it further back, closer to face/eyes). 4. The ride: Good so far, very light, comfortable, snug on the head without movement, works well with my sunglasses. Line of sight is good, rearview mirror works well. I will have to wait for real hot weather to see how it cools. Hope the helmet holds up over the months/years. Fingers-crossed I don't ever have to test out/ experience the impact resistance/safety features. BTW, the 20% REI discount made this purchase more affordable/possible, the $300 retail price is very high and we all need to prioritize value v performance on our purchasing decisions. Choose wisely and ride well.
