Finally got a chance to use this on a recent trip to the Sierra, needed the extra room and weight capacity for all the winter gear and the pack handled 45 Lbs. like a champ. After fiddling with the adjustments I landed in a happy spot that allowed me to put down some mileage without feeling too strained. I would really grade it at 4.5 stars, docking it a halfer for the waist belt being a bit bulkier than I wanted it to be, making the ventilation work a bit less effectively as a result. For comparison purposes, my Exos 58L (3rd gen w/o the belt pockets) fits seamlessly on my hips and vents better. At ~4 Lbs it's not super light, but there are some nice thoughtful touches throughout the pack and construction looks like it will withstand a nuke. Overall, a great pack for trips that demand a heavier load.
I’m getting back into hiking and camping now that I’m retired. I researched lots of backpacks and then went to check them out at the REI store. I picked the Osprey and sure am glad I did. My wife and I did an overnight trip with a five mile hike up/down mountain to stay on top of the mountain. My wife has some life-long medical issues and a mile into the journey could no longer carry her pack, though she was good to hike. I loaded all her gear into my new Osprey pack, along with all my stuff. It was heavy but saved our trip. The Osprey was comfortable and transferred the weight to my hips - not shoulders - and hugged my back for balance. This was a trial by fire and the Osprey was tremendous. I’m so glad I got it.
Light, simple, good for light loads (30lbs or less) the minimal frame isn't up to handling a real load. Hip belt dug into muscles in my hips and caused significant bruising and discomfort. Load also swings about causing balance issues if hopping boulders etc. I would enjoy the pack for overnighter or ultralight endeavors, but not a trip requiring any significant load. Absolutely not for skiing or mountaineering. 40 years experience- outward bound instructor and mountainguide in tetons. 6'2" with a 32" waist.
After using the bag once the shoulder straps fabric started to fail, maybe a one off I'm not sure. I'm in the process of sending back to either be replaced or repaired
I bought this pack to compare to an Aether 60 purchased in 2017. I was looking for a similar capacity pack, with a lower base weight with more modern features. After testing this pack out fully loaded for a desert backpacking trip, I believe the Atmos AG LT meets all of these requirements! Pros: The revised seamless hip belt completely eliminated the host spots I often experienced with the Aether. This is undoubtedly the most comfortable pack I've tried on. The torso adjustment system is so much easier than the older velcro system. Typical amazing Osprey build quality. Just the right amount of pockets and straps for my needs. Integrated rain shell compartment. Cons: The Anti-Gravity system sometimes can be a bit noisy. Nothing crazy, a squeak here or there. May disappear with use. Maybe could be a little lighter with the use of thinner fabrics in places. This pack performed fantastically with a full 40lb load, the upper limit Osprey recommends for this pack. I'm looking forward to many awesome years with this pack!
I took it on a trip to Texas as a checked bag. It's a lot comfier than what I used to use in the Marine Corps! I'm also using it for my 40x40x24x40x40 in celebration of my fortieth year of life. 40 lbs for 40 miles in 24 hours every day for forty days repeated every forty days. (I just turned forty. 😉) I don’t recommend loading anything heavier than 40 lbs in it unless you want to feel the weight. I’ll update, accordingly. Shalom and Lechaim!
This pack was a huge disappointment. The materials, workmanship, and light weight were all impeccable so its worth one star for that. However the most important aspect for any backpack, just like a pair if hiking shoes, is the fit. Or more properly, the way the pack carries. It should feel like its an integral part of your body. This pack is approved by some but it is difficult for me to see why. The pack carries off center, which is to say too far to the rear creating a feeling of being off balance and swaying like a poorly fitted external frame pack. The hip belt is integrated with the Lightwire frame and this further complicates matters because the weight of the pack with a rearward center of gravity puts major pressure on the front of the hips instead of bearing straight downward as would be the case if the pack fit closely to the body. I have been hiking for six decades and I'm sorry to say this may be the most uncomfortable pack I have ever worn.
Echoing other critical reviews, the bottom area of the suspension has too little padding leading to hot spots around the hips under load. The hip belt did not fit me (average guy) well in general.
I've not yet taken it on an outing but I have walked with it weighted down in my local REI Store (Indianapolis). The staff there let me take a few packs for a walk carrying about 40 lbs. in each pack. The comfort of this pack is incredible. I compared it to several other Osprey backpacks and other manufacturer's backpacks and the comfort of this pack won me over. Looking forward taking it out for it's shakedown hike.
I love the weight and breathability! It’s comfortable and matches the load out I need for 2-3 day camp hikes
