I have now worn these twice to work. Day one I worked 9 hours inside a building with concrete sub floors and tile and I had no foot fatigue from walking through the building on standing for 3+ hours straight. Day two I was out in muddy/rainy conditions. I stepped in some shallow mud puddles but nothing too bad but I was worried that mud would get stuck in the upper material. Usually after a day of work in an environment like this we go to the car was rack and spray the mud and dust off our boots and that's what I did. With the high power of the spray, it got the 5 hour dried mud off the boot and a bonus no water penetrated the boot. My feet stayed dry and warm in 40 degrees Fahrenheit weather. Also after spraying them it only took 6 minutes to dry off. Just to mention in August I spent a week in London walking on rounded cobblestone sidewalks for hours a day in shoes that didn't hold up well, which is why I started looking at ON for future travels. Unfortunately I came back with slight pain in the arch of one foot that gets aggravated when wearing my normal work boots on different terrain. Wearing these boots for two days I've felt no discomfort which is allowing my foot to slowly heal now that is December. The cons: The only con is it looks more like a tennis shoe than a hiking boot or work boot, so I don't know how long I will get away with wearing them at work. Also I may have to work with it more but so far the tongue of the hurts the front of my leg when I try to lace it all the way up to support my ankle. I'm not sure it the tongue is to thick or I have to find that sweet spot.
Worst boots I’ve ever had. The glue on the outsole did not set properly ending in failure on both boots. Half way up a 14er, both of the soles peeled off of my boots. On Running will not honor my warranty, so if you do buy keep that receipt or you will be completely out of luck. I got less than 50 miles on these before they kicked the bucket. Will never buy On products again. Oh and you cannot review them on their official website, so I love you REI but I hate these boots so much.
The On Hiking brand is new to me, but consider me a fast fan! These boots are extremely light, but provide great support and traction on the trail. They are super comfortable, and this is not a given since I have a somewhat wide forefoot (depending on the item and manufacturer I sometimes wear a medium width and sometimes a wide width) and a bunion on my right foot, and these are a medium width, in my normal size shoe (I did not size up and these fit perfectly). Many hiking shoes and boots squeeze my bunion terribly, sometimes with an unfortunate seam placement, but these boots felt great from the first time I put them on in my house, through the several hikes I have used them for so far. The toe box is well-sized and well-shaped to allow some room for the toes to splay, and the material feels like it stretches a bit over the forefoot, and there are no misplaced seams that press on my bunion. These are the factors that have resulted in such comfort, but the boot also feels like it is hugging my foot, and with a medium hiking sock and optimizing the lacing, I have had no blisters and felt like the boot was secure and sturdy on my foot (no slipping). So, really, the boot fits my foot like a glove in all the right ways. The lacing system is pretty straightfoward for a mid ankle-high boot: the top two attachments at the bend of the ankle and above are easy to loop in or not use at all. I used them both and have tried different levels of snugness for different trails, and I have felt like the boot was very secure and provided my ankle and entire foot with excellent support. The tread needs a special mention here - it looks a bit like a monster truck! The manufacturer product page notes that the design 'makes sure you don't take the trail with you.' I wasn't sure what this meant until I took several hikes in moist to muddy conditions, and yet when I got back to my car, the soles of these shoes were practically spotless. I have never seen anything like this - I am used to my hiking shoes trapping some trail debris in various nooks and crannies and needing to brush them out. This is like magic. Also, I experienced great traction on rocks, roots and muddy patches of dirt trails. To recap, I am really impressed with the very light weight and yet great support and secure fit. I am thrilled with how extremely comfortable these boots are despite my foot issues that cause me to reject many hiking shoes. I am highly amused that somehow the tread is completely clean no matter the trail conditions. So I rate these boots as a winner and am excited to continue hiking in them for many miles to come.
I want to love these so bad but they’re literally hurting me. The attached tongue makes the fabric fold into itself and is digging into the front of my left ankle and is unbearable. It’s been a few weeks and there’s no change so it’s not just needing to be broken in; also, the right one is fine. Is my pair just defective or has anyone else experienced this?! As far as the comfort level goes for your soles and walking they’re great but I can’t enjoy them.
This hiking boot seemed quite tight and short at first but I wore it a lot around the house and on walks and eventually the material compacted somewhat which made it more comfortable with thin socks. I wore them on a week long canoe trip with lots of rocky and muddy portages. They were super supportive of my ankles while carrying a 50lb backpack. They were very waterproof until I walked in deep water and then they took a full day of sitting in the sun to dry out. They are very good for walking on pavement and very bouncy when running in them with the dog.
I was super excited to try these out after a friend recommended them. Took them for a chill 6 mile hike and noticed immediately that the boot tongue/gusset had some extra fabric that folds to the inside of the boot, hitting on either side of the ankle, for me right above the malleoli (ankle bones). No matter how I repositioned and re-tied the boot, these little folds of fabric poked into my ankles and felt uncomfortable. I could not get them to fold outwards. About 4 miles in, I felt a hot spot forming, and by the end of my hike I had a blister right where the fabric bunched. I've tried them with various different socks, to no avail. I will say that despite this apparent design flaw, the boot itself is very comfortable. The soles are bouncy, supportive, and seem to have good traction, though I didn't test them out in slick conditions. I appreciate the higher ankle support for uneven terrain. I have a wider toe box, and the regular width worked just fine for me since the upper materials are flexible. It doesn't seem like much break-in time would be needed with these. I didn't get to test them out in wet conditions, but the boot felt like a waterproof one - a little steamy on a warm day, so they're better for cooler temps. I wear a size 10 and ordered that size - they'll work with a thinner or normal sock, but I'd suggest going half a size up if you prefer to wear thick socks. These boots would be fantastic if not for the gusset design flaw. I may try to alter/doctor them up so I can continue wearing them on shorter hikes.
After wearing these around town and hiking I have a few initial impressions. First off is fit and comfort: I usually wear a 9-9.5 in hiking boots, so I decided to order a 9, as I plan to use these for shorter day hikes where thick socks are unnecessary. The fit is very similar to my La Sportiva Pyramid boots; they’re fairly narrow and don’t have a lot of room in the upper portion of the toe box. I do recommend ordering ½ to a full size up, especially if you prefer wearing thicker hike socks or want to put in orthotic insoles. For testing and “breaking in” purposes I left the regular insoles in and they were very comfortable and easy to adjust the lacing system for a perfect, custom fit. The top lace grommets hold the laces in place so they don’t slip when you’re adjusting the ankle fit. Initially, I got a hot spot on the outer midfoot. With a little wear and re-lacing it resolved itself a bit, but I’m hoping this issue will go away once they’re a bit more broken in. The description says they provide a “hiking-on-clouds sensation.” While I wouldn’t use those terms, exactly, I would say that they do provide a nice bouncy rebound which helps energize each step, reducing fatigue and alleviating pressure on joints, especially downhill. I’m also very pleased that the ankle section is ultra plush and doesn’t rub uncomfortably on my surgery scars. Another pleasant feature of these boots is how incredibly light they are, both in weight and breathability, which is often difficult in waterproof shoes. Stability: I have terrible ankles so stability is extremely important. While not as stable as backpacking boots, these boots do offer a good amount of stability for day hiking. The sole is wide and sturdy and the ankle support does its job without limiting mobility. I, personally, would prefer more ankle stability, but it works well enough. Additionally, the sole is beefy yet cushioned, reducing the feel of sharp rocks and uneven terrain. I didn’t have any heel slippage going up or down, which is a bonus for stability. Traction: Rocky desert terrain has a tendency to be slippery when rock and dust slide over each other, but I was impressed by how well these gripped both large boulders and teeny rocks downhill, likely due to the massive lugs. Looking at the lugs I was worried that rocks would get stuck, but by some sort of magic they shed rocks. Durability: I haven’t had these long enough to really test their durability, but after quite a few rugged hikes they seem to be holding up very well and the color is still surprisingly bright. Waterproofing: These boots effectively shed light rain. I did test them by spraying them with a hose and they were totally dry inside so I believe they will effectively be good for stream crossings. One interesting note: While I was getting my plantar fasciitis looked at I noticed my orthopedist was wearing On shoes. He said he not only loves and recommends them for their comfort and performance, but he loves them so much that he bought a pair for every one of his nurses and assistants for Christmas (and I noticed they were all actually wearing them).
Took these out for the first time today on a tough 7 mile hike. They were very comfortable. I broke them in with a couple gym workouts. Much easier to break in that most other boots
The first thing you will notice is how light they are! Along with being quite beautiful for hiking boots. Didn’t have to break in and they were super comfortable and supportive. They run true to size. I think that the only thing why I couldn’t give 5 stars is because even though the are waterproof it seems like the feet can’t breath and my feet got kind of hot. Not sure if the waterproof is really worth it! My last note is that I’m new to the brand so some benefits of the boot on the box or even a QR code for more information would be useful.
These boots are really nice. I have hiked in streams and in rain and my feet stayed dry. That being said, the trade off is my feet do get warm in them. The soles are cushioned and comfortable. They are pretty light, not clunky looking and have great tread. The top collar and tongue are pretty stiff but are breaking in nicely. The On website recommends sizing up a half size on these and I'm glad I did. I have fairly wide feet and am used to wearing Lone Peaks. These definately run a bit narrow in the footbed. I think for someone that does a lot of downhill hiking and/or plans on wearing heavy socks it would even be safe to even go up a full size and wear inserts to take up any small extra space.
