A solid minimalist option for winter pursuits.

The Xero Shoes Alpine Snow Boot is a solid option for those people in search of a minimalist alternative to winter footwear. I have worn them almost exclusively over the past month for everything from running errands around town, driving across the country, and shoveling snow to hiking and snowshoeing. The brass tacks: I find them to be excellent winter shoes overall, with a few quibbles. I heartily recommend them to those that know they prefer minimalist footwear in general. I think they are also an appealing option to those looking to avoid heavy and bulky alternatives that crowd much of the winter boot market. The boots appear to be well constructed. I have not been particularly kind to them this past month, but the boots show basically no signs of wear except for several loose threads (tip: carefully use a lighter to melt these down rather than cut them). However, I will note that the boots came with a few and that more have appeared over time. Given the amount of stitching on the boots and the way it appears to be holding insulation in place, this does make me just a little worried about long-term wear. I am being nitpicky here, but the fact that I need to be when finding fault with something is usually a good sign. Hopefully the additional loose threads are just the stitches "getting settled" after the strain of being broken in. These shoes are comfortable to wear all day (if it is cold enough to warrant them). I wore them in temps from the 50s down to the 20s. Everyone's temperature tolerances are different, but I would think they are great for anything in the 40s and below. That said, in the 20s I did get a bit of chill through the sole when wearing no-cushion socks depending on the walking surface. Thicker socks may solve this, but I cannot confirm this due to my sample's fit. Wearing them for extended periods indoors or in warmer temps is possible, but you will likely want to shed other warm layers to accommodate this (and dress to allow it) without your feet sweating a lot. I find the soles to be well designed. I had good purchase on all the surfaces I encountered, and the treads seemed to self-shed debris pretty well. Even sticky clay mud, as well as can be reasonably hoped. (See picture, taken post hike without any cleaning effort ft. a bunch of salt I picked up in the parking lot) I retained passable traction for wooden stairs amid the mess of mud on that hike. Xero also has a robust warranty on their soles, which lends confidence to their durability. Whatever waterproof membrane is employed here works well; I had no water intrusion through the boot. My hiking experience with these boots was quite positive. I loved have such good ground feel and flexibility without the tradeoff of cold feet. My feet never got cold while hiking, even in thin socks during 30-degree weather. These boots are also great for snowshoeing: their light weight and nimble design compliments the addition of the snowshoes quite well. However, I did find that the wrap bindings of my snowshoes compressed the insulation of the boots. Snowshoeing was the only time my feet felt cold in these boots. If you plan to use them for snowshoeing, I advise you to size accordingly for thick socks to offset the drop off. I do wish they utilized an alternative insulation that was more resistant to compression / loss of warmth given the likelihood of people using traction devices that will have that impact. That is really my only real criticism I can level at the design, though. Regarding sizing, Xero claims to have a "wider" fit. I will say this is true, but I think it falls short of being truly "wide". If you need to go with a wide size normally, I would size up to ensure more sock flexibility. Otherwise, I think their claim to fit true-to-size is roughly on point. I am quite happy with the Xero Shoes Alpine Snow Boot. I think you could be too, especially if you are already inclined to a more minimalist shoe.

Comfortable, flexible shoe with somw waterproofing

I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. Pros - barefoot approach - comfortable - no break-in period - flexible soles - 5000 mile sole commitment - wide toe box - good traction - houseshoe/slipper-like feel - durable sole that stands up to rough terrains - well insulated - some water resistance - company is looking into more sustainable manufacturing processes Cons - not waterproof - poor water resistance - unclear eco statment/sustainability isn't fully transparent/clear I was impressed with these shoes and would recommend them without hesitation. This was surprising to me. My days consist of two 3 mile and one 4.5 mile walk currently and REI gives you about week to test the products. These shoes were tested on: - mud on forest trails with leaves (rolling hills) - marshlands in grassland (flat) - gravel road with sharp rocks/stones (flat with some incline) These were light and you are quick on your feet. Did some running in them twice. They held up well in all environments. Water was an issue. What impressed me was how warm they are at around 20 to 30 degrees. No issues with cold feet. Due to multiple fractures and hiking injuries my feet are certainly temp sensitive these days. I have a wide range of boots for all seasons and wear them out pretty quickly. These are up there in quality... With the thermal insoles the feet never felt cold or strained. Something that does happen in my much higher rated insulated hunting boots. Water does seep through. I tested this twice in cold weather: - dipped shoe into 3 inch deep water - walked through a 9 ft long 3 inch deep marshland puddle A short dip/walk through a tiny puddle is fine. Longer puddle lead to water entering the shoe (not the top but material itself) and wet socks. The merino wool keeps your feet warm. Still it was a bit unpleasant. It did take quite some time to dry the shoes (soles removed) on the boot dryer as well. The soles air dried quickly. -- i see neither as a deal breaker. Only something to keep in mind. These have a 5k mile commitment to their soles which is reassuring. They have a natural/barefoot feel to them. And, esp on the gravel road with sharp rocks it was nice to know that you neither felt the rocks and surface nor the profile and texture of the sole itself. They had good traction on an ice lake. They did have mud stuck to them more than I expected based on how the profile is spaced out. This lead to slipping and sliding on muddy downhills where my standard (non-barefoot) boots have better traction. Again, not an issue. Something to keep in mind. And your feet do have more flexibility in these. Overall, impressed. Already started talking to friends about these. May get more depending on my needs. Excited for their efforts around sustainability. They are true to size. I sized up by half a size due to winter, ice, and my tendency to wear thick socks in case water (any shoe) does seep through. You should get them in your normal size. Being an active outdoor person who wears out shoes quickly (all big brand names for shoes and soles) no reservations after an inital 8 days testing. Lastly, style, they look like martial art slippers. So if style is important keep that in mind.

Comfy boots with some nice features

These boots are pretty comfy. They feel almost like a slipper, but taller and more water resistant. The lining is nice and soft and keeps my feet warm enough in the cold, although I'm not sure they would be quite warm enough on the coldest of days—I haven't had a chance to test them out in below zero temperatures yet. The solid black color is pretty bland, but maybe that's a good thing when you don't need your boots to stand out too much. A couple of color accents might be nice though. The sole is quite grippy. It hasn't given me any trouble on rocks or icy surfaces yet. And they're so lightweight. That's a really nice feature compared to all of my other winter boots. The weight makes them feel a lot more lithe and nimble than the other, clunky winter boots I own.

Comfortable, warm, minimal boot

The Zero Alpine is a rare zero drop somewhat minimal boot meant for wet trail and winter conditions. It has performed well on all marks and very comfortable too. I have put miles on the boots across several weeks around town and on the trail. The boot is my current go to for winter conditions. They seem durable, watertight, and grippy so far with nothing concerning to worry about. I'm used to zero drop and minimal footwear and these didn't disappoint on that account. The soles are just thin enough to get feeling through on rocks and uneven terrain. They would probably be a good entry for someone new to miminal soles. Fit is true to size for me with a wide foot and alongs well with other brands in the category. Plan ahead for thick socks if you want the best winter performance. They are plenty warm with normal weight socks also.

Great for all around errand running

Great for around the neighborhood or going to the store.cInitially the extra space around the toes felt awkward but I quickly came to appreciate it. The boots kept my feet comfortable and warm. It’s a stylish enough boot that I wear them in settings besides hiking.

Comfortable, warm, functional boots!

I have worn these boots 7 times in the first few weeks of owning and am very impressed. I am normally between a 10.5 - 11.5 depending on the brand and these in 11 fit great. I have had other wide toe box shoes in the past that look kinda funky, but these look proportional and stylish A lot of boots are comfortable at first, but after awhile you can't wait to get your feet out of them, this is not the case with these. I first wore them for a few miles around my neighborhood one AM to initially try out and then went right into work. At the end of a busy day I realized I hadn't taken them off. A testament to how comfortable they are. Wearing with wool socks I found them to be warm on cold days trudging through the snow and then also breathable on days approaching 50. I also haven't found any reason to question the waterproof claim. Beyond being warm and comfortable I have also found them to be functional. The tread works is a at a good level and they performed well through a few 6 mile hikes I did as well as one snow showing venture.

Great for snow hiking and snowshoeing

The Xero Alpine Snow Boot lives up to its name. I put the miles on with these boots through various activities such as running errands, snow hiking, snowshoeing, and snow biking. I think that these boots excel at snow hiking and snowshoeing - they kept my feet dry and warm, without overheating. The toebox is roomy which is nice for keeping the blood flowing. Traction was great in packed snow, less so on freeze-thaw and ice. I have chronically cold feet but I never felt cold while wearing these boots. However, I cannot recommend them for snow biking. Since the boots are breathable, my toes were quickly frozen. The tread durability seems high as the pins from my pedals haven’t worn away at the tread. One thing to note with these boots is that the finger loop on the back is really small. Not that big of an issue but something to consider if you put boots on with gloves.

Alpine boot

The fit was perfect, that is the only good thing I have to say about them. Wore them for less than a month and they began to leak. If you do any hiking at all your feet will sweat, then get cold. The soles on both began to delaminate, at this time tried to return to Xero shoe and they would not stand behind them because they were a gift, and I didn't have the receipt. They would be the perfect boot if you took short walks on a sidewalk that's clear of snow and above 32 degrees and below 45 degrees.

Versatile winter footwear for Zero drop lovers!

This is my third winter wearing these boots. I pretty much got them as soon as they were available from Xero shoes. I wear them on modest winter hikes (3-5 miles, 1000' vertical) often with micro spikes. I also wear them shoveling snow, walks in snow, etc. IF you are a fan of minimalist footwear (Zero drop), these are great. They keep my feet warm with thick wool socks (temps 10 to 35 degrees) and have yet to soak through when hiking through snow. Sooooo much lighter than my previous winter shoes! I liked them so much that my buddy got a pair for similar hiking, my wife got a pair and my adult son got a pair for snow shoeing. The men's are true to length but run wide (I put a rock guard under my insole which took up some volume) which is fine for winter. My wife who has wide feet needed to order the men's because the women's were not wide enough for her. The only slight negative is that the soul could be more grippy. They have held up well!

Great boot for barefoot style

I have used the boots a few times however since we have not had snow yet, I haven't had a chance to use them in the snow. I have walked a few miles in them around my neighborhood and I find the boot comfortable. They are a flat no offset boot that is similar to walking barefoot. I wear a zero offset wide toe box shoe daily so this was easy for me to get used to, but if you have not, you may need to ease into the zero offset style of shoe. I normally wear a 10.5 size shoe and the size 11 was the closest I could get. They are a bit big, but overall, not too bad. I feel like if I paired them with a thick sock in colder weather, the extra room will be perfect. I don't know how waterproof they are or how they will hold up against snow yet, but based on the build I don't think there will be issues. The boot looks good as well. I went with all black and they seem pretty stylish and don't stand out as an alpine boot. I would recommend these to anyone that wants to try a more barefoot style of boot.
