For anyone who needs sizing advice!
This is definitely a tailored cut, but I wouldn't say it runs small. At 5'7 125" sz 27/4, I typically wear small, but often size up to medium b/c I have broader than "average" shoulders. I also tend to prefer men's cuts for outdoor jackets vs the hourglass women's shape. That being said, because of the well-tailored cut of the Atom, when I tried on the medium it wasn't just roomy, it was sort of visibly ill-fitting. Small definitely the way to go. Room to layer a merino base layer or Patagonia R1, or both together (max I would do without feeling like a sausage). Tried under Zeta SL shell, and for that item I very narrowly preferred the medium for layering purposes. Very excited to have a versatile slimmer fitting synthetic puffy, as my other puffy is the super warm (but also much more marshmallow-y down) Rab microlight alpine. ***Note, teal Atom LT in photos is older model; yellow layered under shell in-store is current model; I believe fit notes to be accurate for both.
Feels like a fleece, works like a jacket
I got this jacket in Labyrinth, which is a beautiful dark teal (a bit lighter in person than online). I'm 5'7" and 180 lbs and the large fits great. It's loose enough to wear over a thin layer but tight enough to use as a base. The hood is big, so it fits over my hat or big hairdo. There's a drawstring to tighten it and keep it from blowing over in the wind. Elastic cuffs keep the sleeves in place but make it slightly difficult to get the jacket over my watch (a Garmin Forerunner 245). Onto the warmth: I wore this jacket on an easy run in 25 degrees F and it kept me warm enough, but not super warm. I wore it hiking in 45-50 degrees F over a quarter-zip sweatshirt, and I got warm enough to take off the quarter-zip and hike back down in the Atom. I like that the pockets have a soft lining. Part of the interior is lined, just below the sleeves. There's a nifty hidden inside pocket on the left side. Overall, the jacket feels cozy like a sweatshirt but has more wind and water resistance than a fleece.
Fantastic, cozy, and versatile jacket!
This is a fantastic, versatile, cozy, and great looking light-weight jacket. This jacket really shines in its versatility. I have taken it biking at night, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, hiking, and worn it around town. For warmer weather it’s a great stand-alone jacket. It breaks the wind and provides warmth while still being light and breathable. It’s also an amazing layer. For windy and moist conditions (like winter in the PNW) it’s a great outer layer over a mid-weight puffy jacket to help stay dry, cut the wind, and provide a little additional warmth. While it’s not a rain jacket, the DWR finish does a really good job keeping me dry under somewhat wet conditions. It is also a great base layer under a more durable shell and kept me warm and cozy downhill skiing without feeling bulky or restricting my movements. The hood is not super large and designed to go completely over a helmet but was just large enough to provide more warmth on the chairlift when I pulled it over my helmet— the perfect compromise on hood size for me! I have never had a jacket that was quite this versatile as an underlayer, outer layer, or stand-alone jacket. It also has an exceptionally cozy hood and fleece neck that I appreciate every time I zip it all the way up. On top of it all this jacket just looked good on me, it was the perfect length for my body, moved nicely with me while I moved, had nice cuffs and draw cord without looking boxy, and I loved the blue (moonlit) color. I would highly recommend this jacket to anyone looking for a high quality and nice looking light weight (spring/fall) jacket or versatile layer. I’ve included pictures to show its versatility as a stand-alone layer, outer layer over a mid-weight puffy jacket, and the hood over my helmet.
Runs larger and color was not as expected
I wanted to love this so much. The Mesmer color online looked like this beautiful vibrant pink, and I always love the punchy bright colors Arc'teryx makes. In person, this is actually more like a muted lilac or orchid purple color, and not vibrant at all, in my opinion. I grabbed some photos in natural light that might be helpful. I always order XS from Arc'teryx but this was really big on me. The torso is longer than usual and it seemed wider too. It looks like on the Arc'teryx site they might make an XXS in this but I am not seeing anything in stock. I am sure it performs great, but aesthetically the color and fit just wasn't for me. Now if you make this in that vibrant candy pink color like it appears online and in an XXS I will be the first in line to grab it!!
My favorite go to for cool hikes
My favorite go to for hiking and cool days around town. I’ve worn it three seasons (F, W, S) hiking or out and about around Chicago, IL, taken it hiking in Durango, CO in March, sprIng road trip in CA going from moderate coast to desert to colder Yosemite and back. It is warm on its own and paired with layers works for me most seasons. Packs down easily for travel and slimmer fit allows it to fit under rain jacket or shells. Zippers, loft, fabric and seams have held up well for past two years.
Good for mid-layer and out-layer
ATOM is my favorite jacket. She has accompanied me to the plateaus of Tibet and western Sichuan, explored deep mountains, and been a great companion for running or day hikes. Atom is highly breathable; during spring and autumn hikes, I use her as an outer layer, effectively balancing warmth and moisture-wicking during outdoor activities. I never feel too cold or too hot, avoiding the hassle of frequent clothing changes. When the camp is static, she serves as a versatile mid-layer for warmth. For daily travel or road trips, Atom is a must-have item for me. The comfortable and soft fabric makes traveling more relaxing. Moreover, she is easy to pack, compact in storage, and retains her fluffy and soft texture immediately upon unpacking after a long period.
Comfy and cozy
I took it with me camping and basically lived in this jacket all weekend. It's comfy like a sweatshirt and mid-weight for warmth. I love the sleeves. This jacket has cuffs that are more like what you'd find on a sweatshirt. They stay in place and feel good around my wrists. Also makes it good for climbing because your sleeves never slip over your hands. The jacket is slightly roomier in the body than I'm used to for a woman's cut. This makes the pockets more usable and is good for layering. But you don't get a tapered waist. Overall though a good fit. And I love that it comes in nice colors.
All around jacket
Comfy fit, warm and it isolates good, even if it’s -20 degrees I can still wear it with only one wool baselayer under while going up a mountain.
Great Jacket But Steep Price
I got an XXS when I usually wear XS for other brands like TNF and it’s still plenty big. The wrist cuff is very tight so I feel like I’m stretching it every time I put it on/take it off. Otherwise, the jacket is very light, soft, and it keeps warm well! Water repellent was working well when I splashed water while washing my hands. It’s my first one from Arc’teryx so I don’t really have a base but I like it so far.
Right balance between warmth and comfort
I bought this in Whistler, a couple of weeks ago and am in love with that! Just the perfect level of warmth and comfort. I bought a medium, which is snug, but not too tight, and goes perfectly under the Gore-Tex shell. I might be back to buy it in other coloursðŸ¤
