Perfect for air travel plus more
I love this backpack. I chose this backpack because it opens clamshell style and holes so much. The rectangle shape means your fully stuffed pack can sit without falling over. I was able to use this pack for a 6day trip for a yoga retreat so packed all the clothing necessary plus toiletries. I used packing cubes to control for overpacking and being sure everything would fit properly. This pack was filled to the brim and closed perfectly and fit under the seat in front of me perfectly on two United flights. The mesh zipper piece I don’t feel is necessary. I feel the zipper tags get in the way and I find the whole thing doesn’t serve a purpose. The back zippered area for electronic items and their charging cords is amazing. I love how separate it is from everything else and doesn’t take away the packing space for clothing. My car keys, charging cords, and journals fit perfectly. My laptop fits perfectly as well. The backpack straps are overly long. Like, way too long. The back strap is a bit too short. I traveled with my jackets on my body to save space in my pack which made the back strap more snug than I wanted. Check your measurements with clothes on to be sure it’ll fit you well. I didn’t use it as a shoulder strap. The pack being so full was comfortable on my back as well. (5’8 female with medium build). I used this for a camping trip as well and it performed well then too. I highly recommend this pack. I love this pack and am happy I’ll have it for long term travel.
Great small, versatile bag.
I bought this bag primarily as a carry on for international travel. Together with a small messenger bag I’ve lived out of it for a week and traveled by bike and public transit exclusively. I very much like the way the straps can be easily stowed away for suitcase-like carry, and the many lashing points. This morning preparing to check out of my lodgings I crammed it full and it kept taking more. Then I attached it easily to by bike handle bars for a short trip to the train station.
A must have!
I ordered this for a couple upcoming international trips where I am just trying to do carry on. My hope in buying this was it could be my “personal item” and I could store it under the seat. I took it on a “test flight” this week and I am ABSOLUTELY SMITTEN with it. I love the fact that it does fit under the seat. I am an over-packer and I was able to fit 4 days worth of clothes and toiletries in the bag. I love the organization. I love how it opens like a suitcase so I am not digging to the bottom of the bag to find things. I am buying one for my son who is going away to college instead of a wheeled carryon. Could not recommend enough!!!
Great Back.. Holds a Bunch..
I have the older black hole version of this bag and recently purchased the new version. Loved the bag.. you can fit an amazing amount of stuff.. had to run through the airport to catch a plane in Houston.. the waist strap which doubles as the shoulder strap is too small. But I love being able to carry my laptop and weekend worth of gear in one pack. Would highly recommend… except for the short strap. Patagonia wasn’t much help.. suggested I take to a seamstress. I miss the front pocket on this new version but the addition of the little stash pocket on top is great.. and I love the addition of the water bottle holder.
A one bag convert
With checked baggage problems becoming a one bagger became a necessity. Then I noticed everyone maximizing every square inch fighting for space in overhead bins. This bag is just a little smaller. Carries just a little less because it doesn’t have an internal handle taking up space like a roller bag. It keeps your lab top safe. If everybody would get one of these it would end the battle of the overhead bin. I appreciate REI carrying Patagonia as essentially the only retailer in my town. Their stuff lasts longer than everybody else’s and that is how they actually help the environment. I’m not saying sacrifice everything, I’m just saying a few inches can take a lot of craziness out of fighting for cabin space for bags.
3 days. 2 styles. 1 bag.
This is it. Traveling for work left me wanting 1 bag that could do it all, and this is it. I filled mine to the brim with a laptop and charger, notebook, large and medium REI packing cubes, toiletry bag, and stuffed my hydroflask (tall skinny one) inside the bag during airport security. Chef's kiss. Used the shoulder strap when fully loaded, and when I unpacked at the hotel, I converted this to a backpack for the conference. Is the backpack as convenient as a daypack? No. Is it an excellent solution for turning a 2 bag trip into 1? Absolutely. Fit underneath the seat on a SW flight without issue. I really drag my feet on making purchases like this - and I am not disappointed at all with my decision.
Disappointed
I was really excited to receive this bag when I ordered it. I am planning to return it, however, for one serious design flaw which seems to interfere with one of its most attractive features. I chose this bag partly for the quick access panel on the back, which is purported to make it easy to remove and stow a laptop while going through security. However, the placement of the internal pockets prevents the compartment from being unzipped easily. The zipper pull hits the pocket and sticks. I have to pull hard to unzip it the rest of the way. Over time, this will either damage the zipper or the pocket. Because this is a very pricey bag from a great company, I expected a better design.
One Bag Go To!
The Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC Pack is also a solid choice for one-bag travel. It’s small enough to be a carry-on but spacious enough to fit everything you need for a short trip. The main compartment has plenty of room for clothes, toiletries, and tech, and the internal organization makes it easy to access everything without digging through a mess. The durable, weather-resistant material gives you confidence that your stuff will stay safe, and the comfortable straps make it easy to carry around all day. If you're looking for a no-fuss, versatile bag for travel, this one checks all the boxes.
Great Pack -- Just not for Petites
This is an AWESOME travel pack, but it was not for me. I am a 5'4" woman, relatively small, and with narrow shoulders, and the shoulder straps were too wide and cut into my armpits and the pack was too long. Even so was still reasonably comfortable on my trip around my flat, so I imagine for a taller person with wider shoulders it's great. Other than the fit issues, this pack is GREAT -- really well built, fantastic organization, easily fits a ton, no loud colors -- the hype is justified.
Paid full price but worth it!
Took it on a 2.5 wk trip to Japan together with a larger check-in hardside. No, I don't pack efficiently, lol, but I had to bring a lot of gifts for relatives & business hosts, not to mention business clothes & raingear. Left the hardside and took this on side trips. The many different ways to carry is a huge plus, altho it took the video to figure out where/how all the straps were configured/hidden. Love the color (dark blue). Maybe a little over-engineered as one person hinted (e.g., laptop storage areas). Nevertheless, highly recommend for durability and the different carry modes which really comes in handy.
