Fantastic Cooler
My family recently purchased the REI Co-op Cool Haul 18 Soft Cooler because we wanted a cooler that was both easy to use and access while driving on a road trip and practical for taking to the beach for the day. The Cool Haul 18 Soft Cooler is incredibly well made. The shoulder strap, side handle and top handle make it easy to carry when storing in the car or totting to the beach with hands full of gear. The added bottle opener and storage pouch are icing on the cake. The lid offers a pouch on the inside to store items or place an ice pack. So far we have been very impressed. On one occasion we forgot to empty the cooler after a day at the beach - a day later (24hrs+) there was still ice in the cooler and our items were still cold. Simply put, great cooler.
what i needed
I was heading to a 2 day trip to Canyonlands. Wanted to have some creamer, ham and cheese for coffee and sandwiches. Used a 2lb bag of ice with items mentioned with room for a couple of more items like some hummus, veggies, etc. So much easier to load and pull out when I needed it than my Yeti cooler. Temperature was about high of 65 and the cooler stayed in my car the whole time. Still had mostly ice by the time I got home to unpack. This will keep your items cool for at least three days and sure you will have to deal with some ice melt toward the end of your trip but love it’s size for what I needed.
Good for what it is not for what it's described as
18 would be a stretch in this small cooler if you want to put any ice or ice packs in it. And 65 hours? Try 24ish, maybe. It's ok to use for weekend trips, but you'll likely need to get more ice along the way if you want to open and close the cooler.
Not impressed
I was not impressed with the way my order arrived. There's fluid inside and out, and it doesn't seem to be water since it's thick and a bit sticky.
It leaks!
It does a great job of keeping things cold. HOWEVER, once the ice started melting, the cooler began leaking out of the bottom seams. Stick to freeze packs if you don't want to soak whatever you have it sitting on.
Great alternative to Yeti
After conducting lots of research, I bought this a month ago. I have used it twice at BBQs and it performed quite well. A friend, who attended both events, who swears by Yeti continually expressed how much better the zippers were on the REI. Filled full of ice on warm days we had no leake or sweating. Solid product at a solid price. I would buy this again.
It’s a good addition
It’s good. I use it as an oversized lunch box which allows for ice packs plus containers of varying sizes. I like that it has both a shoulder strap and top handle. There’s also a convenient pocket built into the interior facing side of the lid. Probably not as robust or capable as a Yeti but nobody really needs that.
Almost perfect!
Does a really good job of keeping things cold, and is simply more useful than a typical cooler. This held plenty of drinks and food for me on a 3 day camping/climbing trip (not including drinking water which I refilled separately). It was SO nice to have a cold drink after a long day of pretending like I know how to climb. We also used this on a 16-hour road trip with the kids. The handles and straps are really handy. The zippers work perfectly. The zipper pocket on the lid is really nice. Only problem - this will leak a little bit if you just dump ice in it. Mine leaked very little. But still noticeable. If you can use ice packs that will prevent the leaking but won’t keep things as cold. We froze a few water bottles in addition to the ice packs. That seems to be the way to go.
Best cost vs value cooler on the market.
I bought this last month and so far it’s been great. The zipper is 100x better than the RTIC coolers I have that all broke within 6 months. I haven’t noticed any leaks yet as some reviews stated. However, I use ice packs rather than ice cubes. I only found out it comes with a bottle opener when I came here to leave this review. Someone must have stolen it from the cooler when it was on the sales floor. Hopefully REI will replace it, otherwise I suppose I’ll have to spend the time to return it for a cooler that’s not missing the bottle opener.
Would buy again
This is a perfect sized cooler for a day trip. We love taking ours out on the kayak, over to a cookout, or on a one night camping trip. So far we have had no issues!
