Material quality
Kammok is all in all a really nicely designed piece of camping equipment. Length is perfect. I'm 195cm tall and sleeping is comfy. I like the bag and how everything is packed inside nice and neat. Only problem is, it could be build with better materials for this price. Tiny strings from sewn zipper are wiggling around and they get cought in the zipper. Over time this could make the zipper malfunction.
Hi Dino, thanks for taking the time to share your experience with the Mantis! We can assure you that the tiny threads do not affect the integrity of the product, but if you have any concerns, we've got your back. We have a product lifetime warranty, and are always available to help. You can contact us by emailing hello@kammok.com to help troubleshoot and make sure you're 100% satisfied with your gear.
Great first hammock
My first time hammock camping and now I'm hooked. Hiked the approach trail of the AT to Springer mnt in the rain just to try it out. The Mantis set up was quick and easy. Slept dry through 3 nights of rain with zero issues. I'm 6 feet 212 lbs and had plenty of room to stretch out. I'll never bring a tent again.
Not for anyone over 200lbs
I’ll start with the good. Made of great lightweight material and set up pretty easy. Negative is it did not sleep well. Everything I tried I could not get good tension on the sleeping area. I’m 6’0 and about 210 there was plenty of leg space but no Matter what I did I would end up sleeping in a U position. Most of the tension seemed to be on the main cord above the rain fly and didn’t really support my body weight well. I bet it would sleep well for someone lighter or with less distance between trees but that’s not alway possible.
Mantis
I purchased the Mantis to camp on Cape Cod for fishing trips that I take along and I don't need / or want to haul a bunch of gear. I just need a comfortable place to to sleep. The Mantis was perfect for my needs. Setup and breakdown was super easy. I'm happy that I purchased the extended Python 15 straps. The whole kit packed into a very small, self-contained package. The best nights sleeping I've ever had while camping - especially after leaning to sleep on an angle. The bug screen worked great, while also allowing great views. After a long day fishing, it was nice to have the options elevate my feet. It definitely beats sleeping in my truck! The weather did cool down and my back did get a little chill, even with a down sleeping bag and an old Army poncho liner, so I'll look into a sleeping pad. Now that I know how much I like it, I'll also pick up an organizer to store some of my items inside the hammock.
Hi John, thanks for reviewing the Mantis! We're thrilled to hear the hammock tent equipped you for a great night's sleep during your trip. A trail quilt used as an underquilt will help with the chilly back once temps dip!
Just hangin' out
I can't wait till next spring to try this system out. I set it up in out warehouse using refrigerant tanks as tie outs. So comfortable!! Imagine trying to explain a five hour trip to the shop that should have taken twenty minutes.
Must have piece of equipment
Set up is incredibly easy, bought as part of the winter kit. used this on a winter camping/snowmobiling trip and it worked excellent. Plan on using it extensively this summer on multi day 4 wheeling trips. Highly recommend
Grateful to equip your adventures. Enjoy the time outside ahead!
Just .... great
Brought the Mantis on a 35 days walk in the international appalachian trail, I did not missed my bed one night, amazing product, easy to instal, light and heaven comfy.
What an awesome adventure to take your Mantis on! We're grateful to hear you enjoyed good rest on the trail with your all-in-one camping hammock!
A few tweaks from being truly excellent
Finally got a chance to try out my mantis this weekend and overall it was a success. But I do have a few things I hope Kammok considers adjusting to get the Mantis up to 5 stars. First, the good: 1) I slept at least as well as I do in a traditional tent (and without the sore shoulder I get on the ground since I'm generally a side sleeper). 2) The tent was pretty easy to put up---no poles to wrestle, no footprint to line up, no searching for the least bumpy section of clear ground (although you do have to find the right trees). 3) The airflow was great and actually better than my traditional tent by a long shot. 4) The whole kit is much more compact than my traditional tent, even excluding the poles. 5) The integrated wing pockets were a great spot to stash a few odds and ends. 6) It fit me (6’, 170 lb) and my Labrador (70 lb) without too much trouble. It was maybe a little too warm of a night for such cozy sleeping, but on a cool spring or fall day I bet I’d appreciate the extra body heat. (Maybe an accompanying dog tent accessory that goes under the Mantis as a future product?? You’d have a buyer right here.) Now the things that I think could use a little work: 1)The bug net. The mesh already has a few pinched areas after only pulling the tent out of the stuff sack a whole two times (once when I first received my tent and once for this first trip). No bugs got in, so currently they’re just little pinches in the weave, not holes. I’ll be keeping an eye out to see how it holds up over time. When I pack my traditional tent, I put it in a stuff sack that isn’t particularly tight specifically to keep zippers and the like from rubbing up against the mesh. I’d say the fairly tight fitting integrated stuff sack might be the cause of these few pinches, so a slight roomier stuff sack that will allow users to roll it down as tight or loose as needed would be a major improvement. Also, while I liked the wings, they are also made of bug net mesh, so I’m worried they might be a weak point over time. I think they’d be better if they were the same material as the hammock. 2) The guy out line locks. The line locks, particularly those for the rainfly ridgeline, were a little finicky and came loose a couple times just from bumping the fly. I put a guy out knot into the most problematic side and that helped it hold tight. But since they came loose just from bumping the fly a bit, I’m worried some inclement weather or a curious critter could cause the fly to come loose. 3) The stakes. First, if you use the included guy out lines for the wings, you need a total of 8 stakes. However, the tent only comes with 6. I brought spares, so I was able to guy the wings out, but I feel like the tent should come with 8 if it is designed to use up to 8 guy outs in total. Also, I had a stake bend without putting too much force into it. Again, I had spares so I was fine, but a little bummed to have a stake bend on the first go around.
Amazing tent with everything you need
Have taken the mantis out half a dozen times now camping and backpacking. It’s become my go to and favored hammock. It’s very well thought you and having a single pack for everything makes it light and small. My son has been eyeing it and wants one now as well. All his hammock gear takes up three times the space in his pack compared to my mantis. Setup and quick and easy. The only thing I’ve found I don’t like is the lines for the rain fly get tangled up and notted very easily. So you’ll want to keep them tied up or you’ll spend forever trying to untangle it. But even with that it’s still the best thing out there.
The Mantis is All You Need!
My starter hammock was an enclosed jungle setup (brand will go unnamed), and while I liked it, I fell in love with Kammok’s modular system a few years later and haven’t looked for anything else (all the while converting others along the way). Until the Mantis. I’m in LOVE with this system and all of the extra details that make this in-one setup what it is. So easy to set up, with the comfortable hang I expect from the brand. The no-knot system is like icing on the cake and the stake slots on the bag are the cherry on top. I can’t wait until the winter barrier is available again. Well done, Kammok!
Thanks Scoutmaster Wendy for sharing your experience using the Mantis! We're thrilled to hear you're enjoying all the details and features that elevate your camp. Grateful for your support. Oh, and the Winter Barrier will be available again by early November!
