Sizing Notes

For boots: Add one half size to your street shoe size. You should be able to slip one finger behind your heel when you are standing up with the boot unlaced and your toes touching the front. If the boot is too short, your toes will get smashed walking downhill. Too long and your heel will slide up and down and give you blisters.

Great boots

These boots are lightweight and very comfortable, yet feel very sturdy and durable. Love the larger toe box. Big enough to let your toes open up and move, but not so big that it feels loose or unsupported. I’m a solid size 12 and purchased the EUR size 46. They fit perfectly. Felt well broken in after a couple of short 2-3 mile hikes. I would recommend these for anyone looking for a lightweight, nimble, waterproof hiking boot.

Disappointed

Boy I really wanted to like these. They're good looking and have good grip and ankle support. Unfortunately, my feet started becoming uncomfortable a few miles into a hike. I swapped the standard insole for a custom one, but it was pushing my already cramped toes even further into the tip of the boots. I ordered a half size up, but I probably should have went a whole full size up. I couldn't really tell that this was an issue until a mile or two into my first hike with them, unfortunately. Also, I can already see the outer sole peeling away from the gore tex (see pic) after the second hike in them. I don't get a sense that these were made with care. Will not be purchasing La Sportiva hiking boots again.

Exceeded Expectations

I've been wearing Keen Targhee II's for quite a while and have hiked hundreds (maybe thousands) of miles in the current pair. The waterproofing was pretty well shot and they were showing their age so before buying another pair I looked around to see what else was out there. The La Sportivas caught my eye, both because the brand is solid and they're advertised as feeling like trail runners instead of heavy hikers. For roughly the same price with a good return policy I gave them a shot. Comparison pictures attached, in the same size (Men's 13) they have a narrower carcass, a more aggressive sole, and are overall a bit bigger but weigh in at 4 ounces lighter. For reference my go-to trail runners (Altra Lone Peak 5) are a bit shy of 5 ounces lighter than the La Sportivas, so they hit a good middle point for weight. Looking at the boot I was concerned, they just look stiff. The Keens take a while to bed in, but after some miles the leather softens up nicely. I'm happy to report that the La Sportivas are actually quite flexible and significantly more comfortable than expected out of the box. I wore them on a couple weekend trips (mostly city) to bed them in, but they didn't really need it, they were pretty good from the off. Grip is great and being vibram I expect a long life. They are squeaky and a bit slick on polished concrete, but I feel like that's just the case with hiking boots, they're made for the rough stuff. Width is decent, the toe box is more open than most, not quite as much as Altras. Lacing is fine, they cinch down well. With the gusseted tongue they go on more like slippers. Breathability is good, perhaps the best praise I can give them is I forgot I was wearing hiking boots on one of the aforementioned trips, the lightweight and comfy feel lulled me into thinking they were just sneakers. I can't speak to durability just yet, but I have high hopes. Looking forward to putting more trail miles on these over the summer. Highly recommended.

Light weight ready to wear out of the box

I wore these backpacking Rae Lakes Loop in California for 5 days/4 nights! Let me start of with saying, I received these for FREE in exchange for a review. I needed new hiking boots, so I was thrilled to get these in the mail. I wore them around the house for a few days here and there. I soon discovered that I needed to size up and the company sent me a new pair, half size bigger. I started off the trip great, but soon discovered that they were not wide enough in the toe box for my feet and I still needed them a tad bit longer. I have very sensitive feet and I think I need to stick to trail runners. I do want to say that they were solid, light weight, comfortable despite my OWN feet issues. They gripped rocks well! They were water proof! I actually walked right through water and it got inside my shoes because I submerged the boots, but they dried out fairly quickly and I did not get any rubbing or blisters from having wet feet. They were easy to put on and take off. If you do not have sensitive feet, I would recommend these to you. My toes tend to shift around and need lots of room. I think I will stick with my trail runners, sadly.

Lightweight, water proof and comfortable

When these boots arrived I was shocked at how little they weighed. On my kitchen scale my size 11's weighed 472 grams, or just about 1lb. I usually hike in trail runners or hiking shoes because I prefer lightweight footwear and never thought I could find a boot with this combination of weight and comfort. I'm really happy with these boots. The vibram soles are super sticky and gave me a lot of confidence in the rocks. I had no trouble scrambling through some scree and larger rocks on my test hikes. The boots don't seem to have a dedicated rock plate in them but I could be wrong about that. I intentionally placed the arch across the sharpest part of several rocks to see if I could find any vulnerabilities in the sole and didn't feel any pain. The stack height is what you'd expect for a boot and provides a good deal of cushioning. I found the insole to be supportive but not exceptionally plush. I might change out the insoles later for something with more arch support but I'd need more miles in the boot to make that decision. Out of the box, these boots are more supportive and more comfortable than the Saloman Outline shoes I'm using today. The toe box is very roomy. I feel like this is the one aspect of the boot that could put some people off if they have narrow feet or like thin socks. The fit in the heel was fine. When I first tried the boots on with my thin socks I wasn't wild about the fit. It just felt too roomy. I think the boots work best for me with a mid-weight hiking sock that has a fair amount of cushion. I didn't get any hot spots or blisters in my test hikes. The lacing system is very solid and I was able to cinch the boot up snugly. In colder weather I could still wear this boot with an even thicker sock. I didn't have the chance to test the water proofness of the boot but I don't have any concerns.

Your dry feet will thank you

This review follows using these boots in a variety of conditions after 10-15 long day hiking trips (4 weeks of use). I’ve used a very large variety of hiking shoes but almost always a low hiking type shoe because in the past when I’ve used a mid or high hiking boots, they’ve hurt my ankles after lengthy use. After I surprisingly received these from REI’s product advisor program, I expected the same result. I’m happy to report this was not the case for these boots. There was one or two times I noticed some ankle discomfort but this was easily rectified by simply loosening the shoelaces at the ankle area. However, this issue was earlier in my use of the boots and now that the boots are “broken in” I have not noticed any ankle discomfort again. Another big plus is the boots seem quite lightweight and I do not notice much difference between them and my low cut or trail running type shoes. The waterproofing works very well and trust me, I’ve been able to test that quite well here in the Pacific Northwest (greater Vancouver area) with heavy snow received last winter and persistent summer rains. However, like any boot of this design, if snow or water gets in above the mid ankle, your feet will eventually get damp or wet. I’ve experienced this but still my feet are drier than they would otherwise be making me really appreciate having these boots! Lastly, the quality and tread of these boots is holding up really well and I suspect they will be better than my low cut shoes but I can’t actually comment on this as I’ve only had these boots for a month. There’s one con to these boots which is initially to me they felt a bit uncomfortable, stiff and un-cushioned at foot/insole area. It was not a big deal but it was noticeable from most of my other shoes. Finally, I decided to try swapping the insoles with some Merrell shoes and this seems to have made all the difference. I noticed the insoles from these boots, while initially looking quite the same as the Merrell’s, are flimsy and not as well constructed. Other than that, I believe the recommendation for these boots is a ½ size bigger, which is what I have. Not exactly sure why; maybe its so you can wear winter or double socks with these? In any case, it doesn’t seem to be an issue and the fit is good. There was one day on a long descent down a mountain that my toes felt more uncomfortable than usual but I have not noticed this issue since on long descents. In summary, these are really great boots and the excellent waterproofing has been a godsend here in the Pacific Northwest. After switching out these insoles with better ones, these boots are just about as comfortable as my low cut hiking shoes/trail runners. I highly recommend these boots, especially in wet/snowy environments but they really could be used anywhere.

A Great Boot With Some Drawbacks

Starting off the review, I want to highlight some of the Pros and Cons. Pros : + Definitely Waterproof (accidentally dunked 75% of the boot into a stream, and it didn't even penetrate to my socks) + Very Comfortable (no blisters or overall soreness) + Very Breathable (Hiking in 90% humidity and it being 90 degrees Fahrenheit outside, I didn't have any excessive sweating) + Good ankle support + Pretty light Cons : - The tread on the shoes are not very good, wet rocks became a major slipping hazard, large slate/gravel was risky, and even mud made the shoes lose grip. In all honesty, after the mud dried on the tread of the shoe, it actually gave me more grip. Shoe sizing : it was accurate to what I usually order from other shoe companies i.e. Hoka, Salomon, Adidas, Chaco, so if you wear one of those shoe brands mentioned use the same size you did with those shoes. To sum it up: It's a pretty good boot, lightweight, waterproof thanks to the Gore-Tex, and the breathability of the boot really shine bright and make it pretty good, but if you're going to more wet places that require you to jump on some wet rocks to get over a stream or deal with some wet gravel I would just be cautious wearing these because slipping was very apparent. If you live in a more dry area though, I believe that these would be great for you. For reference of the conditions I was hiking in, I tried these on the Eye of the Needle Trail near Jasper, Arkansas on June 10th 2022, images on alltrails can give you an idea of the conditions and more of a frame of reference.

Extremely Light for Solid Hikers

First thing I noticed was how light these things are compared to pretty much every other hiking boot and most GTX trail runners I’ve had. Originally I was worried about durability, but they have held up supervising my well. GTX is as expected dry after purposeful dunks. Normally I prefer trail runners for most of my hiking, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the usefulness of the mid height ultralight boots. No real downsides to these boots if you don’t mind the mid height.

Great everyday boot

Good everyday light weight boot. Gore-Tex kept my feet dry. Clip for holding laces in the top eyelet is a nice touch. Makes it quick and easy to lace and tie. Great boot for the Pacific Northwest. Toe of boot is a little narrow, and sizing is a bit small. Would definitely go up a half size. Would go a full size up if you plan to where heavy socks. Boots offered good support on trails and on the sidewalk.

Pretty happy so far, durability remains TBD

I had worn through all the boots that fit me before pandemic, then killed my feet with blisters in an ill-fitting, old but mostly unused, pair of North Face boots, which fit great when I first got them. My feet apparently got wider, maybe from sitting around in my slippers all day WFH for 2 years. So I tried a bunch and landed on the Merrel Moab in a wide, felt great in the store, got all 4 versions (hi/lo, vent/GTX), great on baby hikes in the E Bay hills, but ruined my feet on a backpacking trip. See my review here https://www.rei.com/product/113823/merrell-moab-2-mid-ventilator-hiking-boots-mens and my answer here - Q: Are the soles of these boots hard enough that walking on uneven or pointy rocks doesn't hurt one's feet? https://www.rei.com/product/113822/merrell-moab-2-mid-waterproof-hiking-boots-mens - short answer, No. So I got these, nice & light, decent shank, the insole is better than Merrell, but I still replaced them with SOLE Performance insoles https://www.rei.com/product/185818/sole-performance-thick-insoles. At the time I wrote that, I hadn't done a real backpacking trip with them yet, but spent Thanksgiving week at J Tree, out hiking and scrambling every day, sometimes pretty arduous terrain, carrying climbing gear, and my feet were very happy. Eight months later, having logged a few miles, but still no serious heavy backpacking, they feel great. They're almost as nimble as an approach shoe, and the rubber is sticky. La Spo has always been pretty good to me. One downside of the grippy sole is it's fairly soft, and the J Tree trip embedded a zillion little fragments of sharp rock in the soles, somewhat reducing their grip, and possibly shortening their lifespan. But I just hiked and scrambled on some Yosemite granite, felt good. However, I'm seeing some wearing of the outer fabric on both sides, near the outside of the pinky toe, where my admittedly duck-shaped feet are stretching them, but also due to abrasion. So they may not last too long. I'm kind of used to this now; the days of wearing a pair of boots for many years are probably over. But I got a second pair of the TX fabric sides for 25% off to hold in reserve. Thinking I'll add a leather-sided pair to the collection, see if it's the same shoe but tougher - will undoubtedly it will be heavier and hotter. On sale now... https://www.rei.com/product/219748/la-sportiva-tx-hike-mid-leather-gtx-hiking-boots-mens

Great Long Day Hike Boots

I have not tried these in the heat yet, but in snow and the cold they are fantastic. I'm not so sure about heavy backpack weight with them, but they are perfect for tough all day hikes. I am always off trail in rocks and mud. They clean up well, hold up to rocks and the occasional cholla spins (something their earliest models did NOT). They are easy to get on and out of, and dare I say, attractive.
