Highly disappointed
These shoes are designed to be wet or dry shoes, but every time they get wet, the straps stretch and the shoes come off in the water. I’ve tried tightening them down all the way, but they’re still very loose when wet. Then when they dry, the straps tighten back up and the shoes are too tight. I reached out to Xero customer service and they told me the straps are meant to have some stretch and I should buy cordage without stretch and DIY my own straps or return the to REI. They said they would not accept them since they’d been worn, but REI would accept them. They’re selling a poor product and letting the store take the loss on it. I’m severely disappointed and will not buy from Xero again.
A little too floppy to get barefoot benefits
These are as thin as advertised but this style of sandal is pretty distracting to walk with given how it flops with each step. It’s fine for walking around generally but if you’re looking for something that will give you the minimalist shoe experience I don’t think you’ll get as many benefits from a sandal like this as from a sneaker or something that straps your foot in more securely. It’s nice how compact they are, so you can shove them into any bag without taking up too much space.
These are the only shoes I want to wear now
I purchased these sandals directly from Xero shoes after talking with them about which sandals might work best for me because I have narrow feet and they run wide. The agent was very helpful. I usually wear about Womens 8.5 in sandals and sometimes Womens 9 for sneakers and other shoes. For these sandals I ordered size 8 because i didn't need or want extra room in the soles around my feet since my toes would have room to move as they are open toed. I was unsure about them when they first arrived and kept trying them on for a few minutes and then putting them back unsure if I would like them. I did this for a bout a week or two. Then I went ahead and wore them and never looked back. I love them so much. I love being able to feel the ground and have my feet protected but otherwise feel barefoot. A few of things I learned: (1) Sizing down helps with less awkward sole flapping since there isn't extra sole around my toes to get caught anywhere, (2) At first either my heel felt too far back on the sandal or the piece between my toes felt tight but then i learned how to adjust the straps in different ways and got used to how they fit, (3) When first wearing them I had to learn how to walk differently to be more gentle on my feet because I didn't have a thick and cushioned sole to take the impact of poor walking form (ultimately this is positive for me as I feel I am walking better now for my whole body), (4) I learning that stretching and massaging my toes, calves and arch were needed almost daily in the beginning as I was strengthening muscles I had not used before. I had been having chronic foot pain in my heels and the top of my foot for many months and I haven't had any return of this pain since using these shoes. They help me feel more aware of my body and my stride. I have so many beautiful and "high quality" shoes just sitting in my drawer now becasue I dont want to wear anything but barefoot shoes now. :) Now that I have had this experience I feel ready to let these other shoes go because they don't serve me or my feet.
tripping hazard
They're too soft, and turn under at the front easily.
Best Sandals
These sandals are awesome! Once you figure out how to adjust the straps (5 adjustable points) these are a game changer. They are light, comfortable and true to size. I even wore them while I was snorkeling since there were pebbles and broken shells at the shore, just made sure they were very tight and secured and had no problems. Easy to carry around, they dry fast.
Great for the water. Not the best for running.
First off: I did have issues with flopping and looseness when I first got the sandals, but I learned there are actually 5 points of adjustment on the sandal, not 3 like I had initially thought when I got them. You have the loop at the front where you can move it up and down the top of your foot, and the two adjustment points at the back of the heel, but you also have the adjustment points at either side of your foot, where the straps go through the sandal itself, to pull the slack out of the cordage and get a tighter fit to your foot BEFORE pulling on the heel straps to finish up your adjustments. Since doing this, I've had no issues with flopping and it stays secure to my foot when I move. I can jog comfortably in them for a mile before feeling like I need to readjust, but I personally don't think that's the primary purpose behind this sandal's strap design. I've logged a good number of miles in these sandals and they do best in the environment they're intended for - places where it's going to be wet and slippery, where grip and flexibility matters. I've had no issues going over wet rocks near a creek, on the beach, walking in the rain, or a day at a water park. Super thin and pack down to almost nothing in my pack. By far the thinnest sandals I own with a lot of ground feel, which I personally prefer as a barefoot practitioner, but if you're someone who prefers just a wee bit more padding in your sandals, or if you want a more secure strap mechanism to do more intensive running and hiking while keeping a zero drop profile, you should probably look into the Xero Shoes Z-Trails or the Bedrock Cairn Adventure sandals. The Aqua Clouds aren't the best minimalist sandal for long distance running or hiking, but once you've got the adjustments dialed in, they're a great camp sandal and a great way to get around town without getting kicked out of the local convenience store for your barefoot lifestyle.
I live in these shoes!
Love these sandals. They are incredibly light and give great ground feel. The first couple days I do have to adjust the laces until I get the right fit, but after that they stay adjusted and can be slid in in seconds. Amazing minimalist sandals!
Gets Stuck Under Doors?
Context: I initially wore these around in my small city as a test run before their intended use as backpacking camp shoes. I returned them after 2 days before backpacking at all. Pros: I really appreciated that the shoes packed down extremely small, were very adjustable, and most of all- allowed me to intimately feel the ground underneath me. Pretty comfortable. Inexpensive. They deliver what they advertise as ultraminimalist sandals. Cons: The sole color was lighter than I preferred- after 2 days wear, they began to discolor to an ugly teal-brown color. If I were to repurchase these shoes, I would opt for the men's version for this reason. What I did not anticipate was that these shoes got stuck under doors frequently. I wasn't even aware my foot went there! The sandal would get stuck and I'd take my foot out and spend 3 minutes wrestling it out from under the open door, which often damaged the delicate foam in the process. Of course, you would not encounter this issue in the wilderness. They weren't the best for large gravel/rocky ground, but what would you expect? The ends of the adjustable straps dangled/hit my foot in awkward spots and I didn't find a great solution for tucking them in somewhere.
I love my aqua cloud sandals!
I really enjoy these sandals. They are comfortable and durable when going hiking. I enjoy wearing them everyday.
