I really want to love these but the quality is manufacturing appears to be lower than the standard that should come with a price point this high. I use these purely for working in the Emergency Department where I average 10 miles walked per shift. The comfort is definitely there along with the ankle support of a mid-top and gore-tex protection from fluids of all kinds falling on my shoes. It seemed like the perfect shoe had finally been released. However within 30 days of purchasing, I noticed the shoe began to separate from the sole on the inner side of each foot just behind the knuckle of each big toe. I'm no shoe expert, but it looks like it's due to a lack of glue. Shortly after that, the black protective thin trim sections over the mesh began cracking like they were 5 years old but instead the shoes were just 30-45 days at this point. I reached out to Hoka who you think would have a red carpet customer service experience for a shoe that cost roughly $200 including tax, but what I got was that customers need to ship the shoes back to Hoka at the customer's cost and then wait up to 2 weeks for someone at Hoka to determine whether or not they feel it's a manufacturing issue. If they deem it qualifies for warranty, they don't send you a new pair. Rather they send you a credit for their website and you're forced to make another purchase on their website where you end up paying for shipping again potentially just to replace the first pair. Where other brands like Oboz and Kenetrek have great warranty experiences where you can send it photos for immediate warranty processing, Hoka seems to be less interested about the customer experience and more about big corporate processes that could be cutting corners based upon these shoes so far. They are comfortable and the amenities on the shoes are good too, hence the 3 stars. But if quality issues bottom out after 30 days, it makes you wonder what else is yet to come for that expensive price point. NOTE: The photos attached reflect 4 months of indoor use as I wear them only for working in a hospital.
Took shoes for a 3 mile test on seasonal road, very comfortable except on ankles. Any uneven terrain they rubbed, would definitely cause a problem on my backpacking trips! Got home and checked on return policy to send back. Really bothered me, because I loved the shoes! Looked over the shoes and on the back side of the lower lug is a metal plate, this was the cause of the irritation on ankles…..,so I removed lugs and plates and ran laces through holes and relaced to top lugs. Problem solved!!!! I did same thing to my Merrill boots and never had an issue. Too bad this wasn’t addressed when making the boots.
Pros: These shoes have the usual good cushioning and comfort of a Hoka. I like the lug depth of 5 mm. They "bite" into dirt and gravel trails better, resulting in less slipping on the trail. Cons: The laces are too short. I like to double-knot my shoelaces and these are barely long enough to do so. The strap on the back of the boot (for assisting pulling the boot over my foot) is oriented incorrectly! Why the strap/loop is horizontal, instead of vertical, baffles me. One star deducted for the cons.
This is my second pair of Hokas. I also own the Mach 4 running shoe and after hundreds of miles I still love them and they are in great shape. These are probably the most comfortable boots I've ever worn. They are more like a hybrid trail running shoe. in fact it's very easy to break into a jog on the trail with these on. They aren't going to be good for backpacking or any other type of rugged hiking, but for a comfortable, swift pair of day hiking boots you probably won't find anything better.
just wore these through a very rainy run of the Fiery Gizzard trail and they help up great. they are lightweight and comfortable, but the traction is a little less than optimal on wet rock surfaces, but fine otherwise. they are NOT insulated so be weary of that if you are curious about using them in snow or cold temps. however if you try to dry these off near a fire, be very careful as the foam and/or side panels will experience warping in strong heat from a fire, even if not near the flames. learned the hard way, but still will be beating my pair to death. ps: they do feel like they run true to size, maybe even a little large in the toebox. go with true size or size down half a size for a snug fit. and i highly recommend swapping out the insoles for something with more support if you wear them all day long...
Long time Hoka user and have been using the Speedgoats for years and love their comfort but was disappointed with how quickly the lugs would wear down, rendering the boots useless at that point even though the upper was still in great shape. I was attracted to the Trail Code boots because of the thicker lugs, and the comfort seemed sufficient compared to the SG's. After a month of use(around ~75 miles), the insoles are no longer soft and cushy like they were when they were new, and the boots have also lost their waterproofness already as well. The left boot has started to make a squeaking sound(perhaps some moisture got under the insole?), which is very annoying while using these boots. Overall, I would not recommend these boots because they aren't comfortable or durable after such a short amount of time and limited usage(I generally get 300-500 miles out of a pair of boots, but these fall way short of that). I think Hoka should put the tread pattern from the Trail Code boots on the Speedgoats, and they would have a more durable, comfortable, long-lasting boot.
I just bought these and have yet to hike in them. The one thing that stands out it the loop on the back of the shoe. Although it is good-sized and well-sewn, it is horizontal rather than vertical! Whose idea was this? It needs to be a vertically-oriented loop to assist with pulling the boot on. Bad idea to place it horizontally.
I had heard many great things about Hoka products, and thought these would be the answer to a long hunt for new boots. Unfortunately, they were not. I found the wide sole to be a little clunky and stiff, and they did not feel agile on the trail. Comfort of the shoe bed was okay, but nothing to get excited about. The worst issue however was the finishing of the liner. There was a hard point in the liner that when laced up would press into my ankle. Thought it may break in, but never did.
These are excellent light weight hikers, great traction, good ankle and heel support, and I found the toe box generous (size 9.5m). I really like the feel and function. A warning to anyone considering the new color hot sauce for online purchase. The color does not look at all close to the stock photos, the color is very pink and not red. I would have went with a different color had I seen it in person.
Love these, my feet and knees are much happier now with these thick soled shoes
