I wish I'd read the reviews of these pants before buying them. They're super comfortable and light weight. But I wore them twice, then washed them and ended up with pilling as described by many other reviews. After washing I read the washing instructions and see that the expectation is they are washed in cold water, by themselves, on a gentle cycle. No thank you, Mountain Hardwear, that is not an acceptable requirement for activewear/outdoor gear. I've had and loved lots of other MH gear over the years, but this is super disappointing.
I have been living in these pants lately. Hiking, climbing, and hanging out in them almost every day! They're super light-weight and breathable, but warm enough for warming up at the crag on chilly mornings. And, I love the volume minimizers/ankle synchs- they make sure you can still see your feet while you're climbing, and prevent you from accidentally heel-hooking your pants, instead of the hold! The zipper pockets keep valuables secure. Above all, they're super comfy!
Bought these pants for a trip up Rainier. Out the package the fit was great and the material felt super comfortable. Unfortunately this is where the good review stops. After on 2.5 days of use these pants have an incredible amount of pilling. Every friction point of my harness and all through the gusseted crotch, the fabric has been compromised. I definitely cannot recommend these for their advertised use. I would not buy these again until MH fixes the fabric issues.
Thanks for leaving us your feedback. We're sorry to hear about your experience with the pants.
I have 3 pairs of the original Chockstone pant, and despite pilling, wear the sand colored ones all the time. The others have not pilled (yet?). Great comfortable pants. Enter Chockstone/2. Pretty much the same pant, but some differences. First off, beware: Some descriptions state there are two zippered back pockets. In fact, there is one snap back pocket. (Had it been as advertised, I would easily given 5 stars.) Second, the new version seems to me a bit looser. Not a big deal, still really comfortable. Lastly, and picky, I liked the design of the slant pocket in the original better. The pocket seam was on the inside, which gave a cleaner look. Again, not a big deal, just some feedback and information. Will probably buy another, and I like the blue!
I bought these for climbing, but the material can't take too much abuse. The first time I wore them I was belaying my Buddy while sitting on a rock. He was running laps, so I was on the boulder for a bit. I found out, after standing up, that the rock damaged the butt of the pants. I'd like to provide pictures...it looks like the lil fuzzy balls that a cheap cotton shirt gets after hard use. Shouldn't have happened after a single use. If the knees and butt were reinforced with A5 material they'd be perfect.
So I finally settled on these as a hiking pant. Wore them up Mt. Elbert on 10-2-20. Super comfy pant. Wears great, curious about the durability in the long run. Not a big fan of the zipper pockets, same on the pull-on version. I'd prefer pockets like the Chockstone short. My biggest complaint is the belt. It's pretty worthless. I wasn't wearing a full pack with hi-belt, just a Scrambler. The belt buckle kept coming undone. I'm going to have to replace with a Bison belt. Other than the belt, great pair of pants.
I bought these with a refund I received after returning a pair of chockstone pull-on pants due to major pilling. Decided to spend the extra money and upgraded to what I thought would be a nicer quality pant that would last with light outdoor activity, hiking and general wear. Well, I just received my new pair and they are pilling after the FIRST WEAR. They haven't even been washed yet! For this price, spend your money on something else.
I bought these as a climbing pant and have used them indoor bouldering and on a hike on -5C. They performed well in both cases, being light and stretch, giving great range of motion. Despite getting up close and personal to the rock, they show no wear. But I've only worn them 3 times! I wore a long base layer underneath them on the hike, so not sure about warmth or wind resistance; I was not cold, for what it's worth
I read some great reviews online for these trousers. They fit perfectly and they are Extremely comfortable and at first seemed fairly wicked. I should have read the negative reviews. It seems mountain hardware changed the material they produced the chockstone pants with and now its extremely poor quality. Pilling was visible from first wash and couple of months later I now have loose seems.
I really loved these out of the packaging. Super comfortable, unbelievably stretchy.. 10/10 for climbing, yoga, general active wear, but like the other reviews the material pills after only two usages. I'm going to return them because they'll likely start to develop holes after more usages. Spend your hard earned money on another something else.
