I have struggled off and on for years with base layers bunching up and causing problems with the upper part of my ski boot hurting my shin/calf. My daughter happened to mention that her ski instructor boyfriend wore the 3/4 length base layer bottoms so he didn't have to deal with boot issues. This is a guy that is in his boots 5-7 days a week during ski season so he's definitely going to be comfortable while working. This lead me on a quest to find the shorter base layer because your calves don't get cold so why would you need an extra layer there anyway. I happened across the Helly Hanson base layer and ordered a pair for myself and my daughter because she has struggled with boot issues also. I was able to try them out last week skiing with the temperature between 20° to about 28° and they kept me warm. I wear a Stio shell bib so my ski pants don't have insulation. (It might be worth metioning that the resort I was at does have a few chairlifts with heated seats but I was still comfortable on the chairs without the heat.) Anything below that temp and I would probably need another layer over the Helly Hansons. The biggest plus for me is that I wear neoprene compression sleeves on my knees and I always hated having to take off my base layer to put them on and then put on the rest of my gear, especially when I dress at my vehicle in the parking lot. With the shorter length, I could easily pull on the sleeves without taking them off and not worry about flashing anyone! Another bonus is they don't smell bad like some base layers can at the end of the day. I honestly liked these so much that I bought a second pair for myself for those multiple days of skiing weekends. I also am very sensitive to anything with wool in it, even merino makes me itch a little bit. These were absolutely soft and comfortable with absolutely no irritation. So the merino wool on the outside layer is perfect for people like me. The only knock I could possible give these is that the first pair I purchased had flaws in the elastic waistband that might of affected longevity but REI took them back and I got another pair with no flaws so quite happy about that. These might be pricier than most base layers but honestly worth every penny I spent on them. I'm 5'4" and weigh 140# with a muscular, skier, mountain biker, bottom end and the medium size fit perfectly.
Cozy and warm! I haven't worn them a lot so I don't know how durable they are with frequent use.
