Very, very, very poorly written.
"Your skills and experience, beyond the scope of this text, will help you make wise and competent decisions." I bought a book to learn about wilderness care, and the very first chapter proudly proclaims that it's not going to teach me the skills I need or provide any experience that helps. This seems an awful lot like cherry picking one worthless quote, but it's just one to demonstrate a theme. Chapter one starts with using all of the skills you've learned in the course to assess a patient. But you haven't learned any skills at all. Literally nothing. Chapter one should be the last chapter, not the first. Here's another section, verbatim: "Back. Feel each vertebra from the neck to the pelvis. If the patient is on the back, logroll to press on the spine and look at the back. This is a good time to place the patient on a pad or in a sleeping bag." Aside from the fact that YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO MOVE A PATIENT WITH A SUSPECTED BACK INJURY, the book gives us no useful information. Feel the vertebra? Okay, but why? What am I feeling for? What do I do when I feel something? What is a logroll to press on the spine? What's normal, what's abnormal, and how am I supposed to know the difference? I am already fully aware that back injuries exist; I bought this book hoping it might teach me something about them, or anything else. I've gone through about 20% of the book and I honestly will probably tear it into pieces and use it to start a fire. I don't even have the heart to donate this book because it's just that bad.
